The Simplest Flashlight Is Just a Rolled Up Piece of Paper

A flashlight is a crucial thing to have around the house, but even though it can be super useful, it's probably plastic and/or filled with D batteries. Not exactly elegant. The Paper LED Torch Light on the other hand, is the picture of simplicity.

Designed by Kazuhiro Yamanaka, the Paper LED Torch Light is as simple as it seems. There's a single LED mounted on the inside, and when the paper is curved into a tube, two hidden switches turn it on. When the paper lies flat again, it goes off. It's not the first paper-light design we've ever seen, but it's definitely the most wonderfully simple.

As neat as it is, the Paper LED Torch Light doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere. But let's face facts; it probably wouldn't be a very good flashlight. Still, it's a pretty neat trick. And if you ever needed a flashlight that could hide, you'd be hard-pressed to find something better. [Designboom]

More patients than docs report skin surgery problems

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - More than one quarter of people being treated for non-melanoma skin cancer in their doctor's office reported some type of complication after surgery, in a new study.

About half of those complications were medical problems related to the cancer-removing procedure, including pain, infections and slow wound healing.

But just 3 percent of doctors noted a complication in the same patients' medical records, researchers reported this week in JAMA Internal Medicine.

"It's important, in order to improve care and improve quality of care, to be aware of what our weaknesses are as physicians," said Dr. Eleni Linos, who led the new study at the University of California, San Francisco.

"If a quarter of Toyota customers were unhappy after service, they would take that very seriously," she said - the same as if a quarter of Apple product buyers didn't like their purchases.

The researchers followed 866 people - mostly older men - being treated for non-melanoma skin cancer, which includes basal and squamous cell cancers.

About 2.2 million people are diagnosed with those cancers every year in the U.S., but only 2,000 or so die, according to the American Cancer Society.

One recent report, also from Linos and her colleagues, found most people with non-melanoma skin cancer undergo surgery to treat it - even though for some elderly or ill patients, benefits are unlikely (see Reuters Health story of April 29, 2013 here: http://reut.rs/11RhiQn).

This time, the researchers sent questionnaires to patients who had undergone some type of in-office skin cancer procedure for up to five years after their surgery.

Thirteen percent of them reported a non-medical problem, such as issues with their scar or appearance or difficulty getting to appointments. Another 14 percent said they had a medical complication - most commonly pain, numbness or itching, problems with wound healing or infections.

One in ten people reported a moderate or severe complication on a post-surgery questionnaire.

In contrast, Linos and her colleagues found doctors noted a complication in the medical charts of just 22 of those patients, or 3 percent.

She said the proportion of patients who reported a complication was "sky high" compared to what the researchers were expecting.

WHAT'S A COMPLICATION?

Patients might have a broader view of what counts as a complication, she said, such as disliking bandages or scars. Or, doctors may simply not ask patients about their post-surgery problems often enough - and may miss chances to address treatable issues.

Complications can be subjective for patients, and even scarring can be "life-altering" for certain people, according to Anthony Simon Bates, who has studied how patients are asked about complications of skin cancer surgery at the UK's University of Bristol.

"There's a real need to manage patient expectations and for doctors to provide adequate pre-operative advice and information to patients," Bates, a medical student who wasn't involved in the new research, told Reuters Health.

According to Linos, the same patterns have been suggested for hospital care, as well as medication side effects: what patients experience can be very different from what doctors expect.

"The bottom line is, it's worth asking patients what they're experiencing directly," she said. "We're all on the same team, but often we may not be as aware as the patient is about their own experience."

One man's escape from Camp 14 and North Korea

Only one prisoner born in North Korea's gulag is known to have escaped to tell his story. A Q&A with Blaine Harden, the journalist who wrote about Shin Dong-hyuk.

By Robert Marquand,?Staff writer / May 21, 2013

Shin Dong-hyuk (seated, l.) was born in a notorious North Korean prison camp, from which he escaped. He?s shown being interviewed on French TV last year.

There is only one prisoner actually born in one of North Korea's infamous prison camps known to have escaped alive. His name is Shin Dong-hyuk.

Mr. Shin was raised in Camp 14, reported to be one of the cruelest in a system of hard labor prisons.

His parents didn't know each other before their brief conjugal marriage arranged by guards. Shin grew up with no idea of a world other than the beatings, torture, and snitching that were part of everyday life at the camp. He betrayed his mother and brother over a meal of rice, sending them to their execution, saw his father as an acquaintance, and roasted rats to stay alive. Yet he also was able to catch his first glimpse of life outside the camp's fence through the unexpected, simple kindness of a fellow inmate.

Shin made his improbable escape at age 23 in search of food; if caught he faced execution. But after a harrowing trip to China, he made it to Seoul, South Korea.

Washington Post correspondent Blaine Harden's book "Escape from Camp 14" has made Shin the best-known advocate for exposing the North's hidden prisons. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton mentioned Shin at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

Mr. Harden spoke with the Monitor in late April.

(Read the Monitor's article about the new UN inquiry into North Korea's gulag system)

Are these like the camps in Nazi Germany?

No, these are not death camps; the authorities do not execute people as a matter of course. They work people to death, but that happens over a number of years.

Probably a better analogy is Stalin's Gulag. The camps were set up under Kim Il-sung, an acolyte of Stalin, as a mirror of the Soviet Gulag. What is different in the North Korean case is that they seem to be crueler and have lasted twice as long.

Camp 14 has a reputation for housing high-level Pyongyang people that run afoul of the regime. It is a completely no-exit camp, with no rehabilitation; guards treat it as a military front line. There is less sleep, more work, more brutality.

Shin is born in a dark place, a product of the camp. But this doesn't last forever?

Yes, he speaks of an awakening. He had the first inklings of it after his mother's execution. He was 14 and in an underground prison with a man who was kind to him, treated his wounds after he was tortured. The kindness of that man, "Uncle," was something to him utterly new. The guy shared his food. He basically lavished attention and love on Shin in a way he had never experienced. So when he got out, went back to normal camp life, got pushed and bullied, it hit him hard. He went into a funk. He said he started to see the camp for what it was, just a really miserable, filthy, stinking place.

Tell us about Shin's turning point after meeting an educated prisoner named Park.

Shin is assigned to snitch on Park but in the end didn't do it. Park starts telling him stories. At one point Park asks where Shin is from. Shin says, "I am from here." Park tells him, "I am from Pyongyang, the capital." Shin had never heard of the place.

But instead of laughing at this ignorant young kid, Park gave him a primer on what it means to be a citizen of the planet, he talked and talked. Before that it never occurred to Shin that people lived outside the fence.

But talk of grilled meat finally got Shin's attention. He started to dream about food, got a spring in his step, and surprised himself by asking Park to escape with him. Shin was interested in finding his next meal, above all. His focus as a feral creature of the camp was self-preservation and maximizing calories. That was everything, the essence of his escape. He wasn't after the bill of rights.

What is Shin like?

He's really smart. It has also been a bumpy ride. But he has friends he trusts now.

He's kind of a jokester, not adolescent, but gets real joy being with friends, especially when they are all eating dinner together.

He pulled out a huge Galaxy phone the last time I saw him. Smart phones are no more recent to him than the concept of friendship or of love. They are both part of this new existence, and I think he has an easier time with technology than with human emotions.

But he seems to know his role is to tell the world through his life what is going on in these camps right now, and the kind of kids they are raising there.

We have had public satellite images of the camps for more than a decade. Where is the outcry?

Three main things have occluded our vision of the human rights catastrophe:

No. 1, by far, is the comic element of the regime. Particularly Kim Jong-il, his appearance, his puffy hair, big glasses, and funny suit. Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show" highlight the risible nature of the images coming out of the North's propaganda machine. It is fun and funny, silly and ridiculous, over the top. It is so funny that it takes up all the oxygen in our perceiving of North Korea. No. 2 and 3 are the nukes and missiles.

Chrome for Android updated with tab history on slates, fullscreen for handsets

Google's like the gift that keeps on giving. Following earlier news of a Drive for Android update, the team from Mountain View today rolled out a new version of its Chrome browser for mobile devices. This update brings the same features we saw a little over a month ago in the Beta channel, however Google's now deemed them ready for prime time. That (along with some undisclosed under-the-hood enhancements) includes the pseudo-fullscreen mode that's triggered by scrolling the page and, for tablets, the ability to view the tab history by way of the browser back button. For those who decided to skip the experimental version, you'll find the app in its stable form up for download at the Google Play link below.

American Cancer Society turns 100 as cancer rate declines

NEW YORK (AP) -- The American Cancer Society - one of the nation's best known and influential health advocacy groups - is 100 years old this week.

Back in 1913 when it was formed, cancer was a lesser threat for most Americans. The biggest killers then were flu, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and stomach bugs. At a time when average life expectancy was 47, few lived long enough to get cancer.

But 15 doctors and businessmen in New York City thought cancer deserved serious attention, so they founded the American Society for the Control of Cancer. The modern name would come 31 years later.

Cancer became the nation's No. 2 killer in 1938, a ranking it has held ever since.

The Iconic Eames Molded Chair Is Being Made with Fiberglass Again

This is awesome. Herman Miller has announced that it will start making the iconic Eames Molded Chair in fiberglass... again. The fiberglass chairs were discontinued from production in 1989 and ever since then, the iconic chairs that decorate modern houses have been made with recyclable polypropylene. But now we're getting back to the good stuff.

First introduced in 1950, Ray Eames decided to discontinue the fiberglass model of the Eames Molded Chair in 1989 because its material chemistry was "detrimental to the environment" and the fiberglass couldn't be recycled. Totally sensible reasons.

Not anymore. Herman Miller has developed a more sustainable way to make fiberglass. The new manufacturing process (which cribs from the car industry) eliminates volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) during production. Herman Miller describes the process of its new fiberglass:

The fiberglass is now formed and processed using a woven, ?dry binder? method instead of the traditional ?wet? process, eliminating wet glue adhesives and instead relying on a heat-activated, dry polyester. This has also eliminated the need for thermal oxidizers and other environmental control equipment in the production process. Combined with a new ?monomer-free? resin, the production process for the new fiberglass chairs is emission-free and creates a safer environment for the workers handling it, as well as a greener, recyclable shell at the end of the chair?s useful life.

Even better, Herman Miller reformulated the color pigments to nail the vintage color options for the new old Eames Molded Chair. The nine vintage color options of the Eames Molded Chair and Side Chair will be available in Summer 2013. They'll come in wire, dowel leg, four leg, stacking and rocking bases.

Here's what the fiberglass version of the Eames Molded Chair looks like:

Roll off his back

MooreAP

On Monday, the Broncos will practice for the first time as a team since capping a stellar regular season with an epic postseason collapse, thanks to a 70-yard touchdown pass that allowed the Ravens to force overtime.

The throw from Joe Flacco landed in the hands of Jacoby Jones because Denver safety Rahim Moore jumped too soon and flailed clumsily at the ball.? After, of course, Moore allowed Jones to run right past the safety.

But the Broncos are still sticking with Moore.? From coaches to players, Moore has been absolved of responsibility.

?I think he?s over it; I think we?re all over it, you know,? Denver defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio told the Associated Press.? ?I think we all look back and see things that we could have done better.?

Linebacker Von Miller take responsibility for not getting to Flacco before he could launch the desperation pass.

?Rahim made a few key tackles that day. He was all over the place. It was just a football folly,? Miller said. ?I don?t blame Rahim.? I blame me and Elvis [Dumervil]: 70 yards to go, we know they?re going to pass the ball.? That?s why they bring me and Elvis to close the game out and neither of us got to the quarterback.? I took it hard.?

Coach John Fox and executive V.P. of football operations John Elway both believe that Moore?s better days are in front of him.

?Rahim?s focus is on getting better from a year ago,? Fox said. ?And there wasn?t one play.? It was a whole season.? He made great, great progress a year ago from his rookie year and we anticipate him to do that again.? He?s a very talented young man.?

?[H]e made tremendous strides from Year One to Year Two,? executive V.P. of football operations John Elway said.? ?And I think hopefully he makes those same strides.? He really had a good year last year and we want to watch him to continue to grow.? Safety-wise, we feel pretty good.?

But not good enough to resist kicking the tires of Charles Woodson.

While there?s no reason for the Broncos to bail on a second-round pick in the 2011 draft, Moore?s ability to forget after having months to stew will be critical to whether he can continue to play at a high level ? and to keep getting better.

If he does, last year?s gaffe will become a distant memory.? A very bad, awful memory, but distant nonetheless.

Bamboo releases Loop photosharing digital card app

Wacom's Bamboo line of products have always been far more whimsical and user-friendly than the rest of its professional offerings, and it's taken that a step further today with the introduction of the Bamboo Loop digital card app for iOS. Essentially, the app lets you doctor up a photo with graphics and different styles to create a greeting card of sorts that you can ship off to a friend. If you're on the receiving end of the card, you can scribble on it and "loop" it back to the sender -- sort of like a digital version of passing notes back and forth in class. Of course, you're free to upload your cards to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram too if you feel like sharing them with the world. The app itself is free, though you can cough up an extra $2 if you want to get additional style packs. It runs on iOS5 and higher, and you can download it from the iTunes store starting today. As for those on Android, hold tight, because Loop should be available to you as well pretty soon.

'Star Trek' boldly goes to $84 million at box office

Movies

Paramount Pictures

Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Kirk in "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Paramount and Skydance Productions' "Star Trek Into Darkness" topped the box office chart with a solid four-day opening of $84.1 million -- even if it didn't engage warp speed and hit $100 million.

Overseas, the J.J. Abrams-directed tentpole took in another $40 million over the weekend for an early global total of $164.6 million, including $80.5 million internationally. The 3-D pic, playing in 40 markets, tied with "Iron Man 3," which took in $40.2 million in its fourth weekend.

But it was Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" -- benefiting from being the only female-skewing event pic -- that topped the foreign chart, grossing a solid $42.1 million as it opened in 49 markets following its international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival May 15.

There was plenty of action overseas all the way around. Universal's "Fast & Furious 6" tore out of the gate as it debuted in the U.K. and Ireland, grossing $13.8 million to score the biggest opening ever for a Universal title in those countries and boding well for the film's domestic bow over Memorial Day weekend and its continued expansion offshore.

Heading into the weekend, many box office observers believed "Into Darkness" had a shot at hitting $100 million in North America, easily outpacing the $79.2 million opening of Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek," which reinvigorated the sci-fi film franchise. Paramount had hoped for $100 million, but hedged its bets by estimating an $80 million to $100 million debut.

VIDEO: "Star Trek Into Darkness" Trailer: The Enterprise Is "Dead"

Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said he was "extremely pleased" with the sequel's performance, both domestically and internationally, where the studio waged a massive marketing campaign to improve the franchise's standing ("Star Trek" has never been as popular overseas).

"'Into Darkness' did 6 percent better than the 2009 'Star Trek' and received an 'A' CinemaScore, so we know people love the movie," Moore said. "And overseas, it is pacing 82 percent ahead of Abrams' first film."

In Russia -- where sci-fi often suffers, but 3-D is enormously popular -- "Into Darkness" debuted to $8 million, four times the opening of the 2009 reboot, which topped out at only $4 million.

Moore says "Into Darkness" could ultimately double the $127 million earned by "Star Trek" in its entire run internationally.

"Into Darkness" returns Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the roles of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock. Other returning castmembers include Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Karl Urban. This time out, a scheming villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch resorts to terrorism to threaten Earth.

Paramount and Skydance co-financed the $190 million tentpole, and produced alongside Abrams' Bad Robot. The script was written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.

In the U.S., "Into Darkness" skewed male (64 percent) while 73 percent of the audience was over the age of 25.

IMAX theaters turned in big numbers thanks to Trekkies who wanted to see the film in a large-format, with 336 theaters taking in $13.5 million.

There is no doubt but that "Into Darkness" faced tough competition from "The Great Gatsby" and "Iron Man 3." In its third weekend, Disney and Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 3" came in No. 2 domestically with $35.2 million. The billion-dollar baby has now taken in $337.1 million in North America and $736.2 million internationally for a total $1.07 billion, the No. 9 film of all time.

"The Great Gatsby," from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, placed No. 3 domestically, falling 53 percent in its second weekend for a handy cume of $90.2 million.

13 photos to get you in the mood for "Star Trek Into Darkness"

Warners' belief that "Gatsby" would serve as counterprogramming to action fare is paying off and already marks Luhrmann's biggest success to date in North America, not accounting for inflation (his previous best was the $57.4 million grossed by "Moulin Rouge!")

"Gatsby" also marks Luhrmann's best opening overseas, coming in 38 percent ahead of Australia ($30.4 million) and "Moulin Rouge!" ($13.8 million). The 3-D film did nice business in numerous markets, including earning $6.2 million in Russia and $6.1 million in the U.K., despite "Fast and Furious." It placed No. 1 in France with $4.7 million, buoyed by its premiere in Cannes.

At the U.S. specialty box office, Noah Baumbach scored with the debut of his black-and-white independent film "Frances Ha,"which grossed $134,000 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a location average of $33,500.

Christine White and William Shatner in "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" in 1963.

Christine Lamson White may have had a career in Hollywood spanning over 20 years, but to many she'll always be known as "the woman on the plane next to William Shatner."

The actress starred alongside Shatner in the iconic "Twilight Zone" episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," in which he believes he sees a gremlin tearing up the wing of the plane.

Lamson died on April 14 at Brinton Woods Nursing Home in Washington, D.C., as her death notice in the Carroll County Times reports. She was 86.

Washington, D.C. native White was born in 1926 and acted in plays while studying English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also earned a Masters degree in speech and drama from Catholic University. By the 1950s she had relocated to Hollywood and appeared in series including "Perry Mason," "The Loretta Young Show" and "Bonanza." According to the New York Times, she appeared in more than 50 television shows and movies during her acting career.

Eventually she left acting to return to Washington, D.C to help care for her aging mother, and wrote, produced and distributed quarterly bulletin called "The Rampart Papers."

Her obituary indicated that she "became acquainted with several celebrities" including James Dean; in a biography of the actor by Val Holley White admitted their relationship "did become romantic at times." She appeared in a 1976 dramatization of Dean's life, "James Dean" as a secretary; according to the IMDb it was her last acting credit.

Investigators seek cause of commuter train crash

By Karen Brooks

(Reuters) - Federal investigators on Saturday searched for the cause of a rush-hour train crash in Connecticut that injured dozens of people commuting home from New York City, three of them critically.

More than 60 people were hospitalized Friday night after an eastbound commuter train derailed and collided with a westbound passenger train on an adjacent track near the Connecticut suburb of Fairfield.

Eight people remained hospitalized on Saturday, three in critical condition, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said.

The collision of the Metro-North trains forced Amtrak to shut down service indefinitely between New York and Boston.

The governor is encouraging commuters who normally use the line to find alternative ways to get to work on Monday.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived at the scene on Saturday to determine the cause. There had been construction and repair work going on in the area and one question was whether debris was on the track.

"They can't rule anything out," said Malloy, adding that he wanted investigators to complete their work as quickly as possible so the busy commuter rail line could be reopened.

The eastbound train was headed to New Haven, Connecticut, when it collided with the train bound for New York's Grand Central Station.

NTSB officials said several cars had derailed, not an entire train.

Malloy said the train cars were new and "designed to the latest standards" for safety and protection of passengers.

"To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a car like this has been involved in this kind of incident and by all appearances they responded well," Malloy said. "One of the things you look at, for instance - did the seats become removed and that sort of stuff. It is going to take some more investigation. That is why they are here."

Metro-North is a commuter railroad serving the northern suburbs of New York City. It is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a New York state agency. Fairfield is about 50 miles north of New York City.

The rail line serves a major corridor between Boston and New York. The New Haven line operated by Metro-North is the busiest rail line in America and serves 125,000 commuters a day, said Judd Everhart of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Malloy said the state Department of Transportation already has ordered the large equipment needed to remove the cars, which will be picked up and put on flatbeds to be taken to another location for further investigation.

The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: Two Colors, Three Dimensions

Mixing surreal anaglyphic animation and a haunting soundtrack, this stunning short by Stephen Chan is cool enough to watch even without the glasses. Of course if you want the full effect but don't have access to pair, just blink your eyes alternately real fast. That might work.

97% of Climate Science Papers Agree Global Warming Is Man-made

An anonymous reader writes "A meta-study published yesterday looked at over 12,000 peer-reviewed papers on climate science that appeared in journals between 1991 and 2011. The papers were evaluated and categorized by how they implicitly or explicitly endorsed humans as a contributing cause of global warming. The meta-study found that an overwhelming 97.1% of the papers that took a stance endorsed human-cause global warming. They also asked the 1,200 of the scientists involved in the research to self-evaluate their own studies, with nearly identical results. In the interest of transparency, the meta-study results were published in an open access journal, and the researchers set up a website so that anybody can check their results. From the article: '... a memo from communications strategist Frank Luntz leaked in 2002 advised Republicans, "Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate." This campaign has been successful. A 2012 poll from U.S. Pew Research Center found less than half of Americans thought scientists agreed humans were causing global warming. The media has assisted in this public misconception, with most climate stories "balanced" with a "skeptic" perspective. However, this results in making the 2?3% seem like 50%. In trying to achieve "balance," the media has actually created a very unbalanced perception of reality. As a result, people believe scientists are still split about what's causing global warming, and therefore there is not nearly enough public support or motivation to solve the problem.'"

Scientists capture first direct proof of Hofstadter butterfly effect

Friday, May 17, 2013

A team of researchers from several universities ? including UCF ?has observed a rare quantum physics effect that produces a repeating butterfly-shaped energy spectrum in a magnetic field, confirming the longstanding prediction of the quantum fractal energy structure called Hofstadter's butterfly.

This discovery by the team paves the way for engineering new types of extraordinary nanoscale materials that can be used to develop smaller, lighter and faster electronics, including sensors, cell phones, tablets and laptops.

First predicted by American physicist Douglas Hofstadter in 1976, the butterfly pattern emerges when electrons are confined to a two-dimensional plane and subjected to both a periodic potential energy and a strong magnetic field. The Hofstadter butterfly is a fractal pattern?meaning that it contains shapes that repeat on smaller and smaller size scales. Fractals are common in systems such as fluid mechanics, but rare in the quantum mechanical world. The Hofstadter butterfly is one of the first quantum fractals theoretically discovered in physics but, until now, there has been no direct experimental proof of this spectrum.

Columbia University led the study and also involved scientists from the City University of New York, Tohoku University and the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan. Columbia prepared the sample and the UCF team measured the regular recurrence of the high-fidelity periodic pattern, engineered by inducing nanoscale ripples on graphene, a carbon material. The measured recurrence served as the essential proof that the measured spectrum was indeed the Hofstadter butterfly. The image that captured the evidence was taken in UCF Assistant Professor Masa Ishigami's laboratory.

Jyoti Katoch, Ishigami's graduate student, used a non-contact atomic force high-resolution microscope to image the ripples, which have the height of only 0.2 angstroms (twenty trillionth of a meter), to confirm that the observed Hofstadter butterfly spectrum indeed matched the theoretical prediction.

"The arrangement of individual atoms, even just one atom can drastically alter properties of nanoscale materials. That is the basis for nanotechnology," Ishigami said. "Atomic structures must be resolved to understand the properties of nanoscale materials. What we do here at UCF is to explain why nanoscale materials behave so different by resolving their atomic structures. Only when we understand the origin of the extraordinary properties of nanoscale materials, we can propel nanoscience and technology forward. What Jyoti has done here is to image how graphene is rippled to explain the observed Hofstadter spectrum."

UCF's laboratory utilizes a novel, the state-of-the-art microscopy technique to simultaneously determine the atomic structure and electronic properties of nanoscale materials such as graphene.

Katoch has been working with Ishigami since 2008, when Ishigami joined UCF. Katoch helped build the laboratory and developed the atomic-resolution capability critical to capturing the picture proof for this study.

Ishigami has a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California at Berkeley and a bachelor's degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has won multiple awards, including the Intelligence Community postdoctoral fellowship and the Hertz graduate fellowship, and has published more than 30 papers in journals including Science.

Oh Baby Baby-Baby Shower Gifts on the Cheap ? Student Debt ...

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Gift for My Cousin?s Baby-Cost $7.00

It?s probably just my age (the big 3-0) but everyone I know seems to be knocked up. Friends, family, co-workers? Apparently I roll with a? fertile crowd. With so many people pregnant, the cost of baby shower gifts was really adding up. A shower here, a shower there and I?m broke. Ok I?m exaggerating. But with all the baby showers, wedding showers and bachelorette parties I?ve been invited to (love you guys, don?t stop the invites) I?m feeling a little cash strapped.

Sure I budget for gifts, but nobody could anticipate so many gifts ?coming due? at the same time.Throw in the regular birthdays and holidays and my budget has taken a beating.

Instead of skimping on gifts or sending impersonal gift cards or cash, I?ve decided to get a little strategic about my gift gifting. Thanks to coupons and a crafty ex-roommate who taught me to knit, I?m revolutionizing the way I think about baby gifts. Here?s how:

  • Make My Own. 1 Skein of yarn ($4.00 or less when I use a 50% off coupon at AC Moore or Michaels) and about 6 hours yields an adorable little baby sweater. I have several big boxes of yarn that I bought when I was obsessed with knitting in college, so I?m still working through that yarn. I typically knit on the bus and while watching TV at night. When you figure in the time?could I buy something cheaper, yes. But it wouldn?t be a handmade original made with love by me. I also make baby clothes and booties, and sew burp cloths and baby quilts-see below (when I have time).
Jack quilt

Quilt Made for My Nephew

  • Buy On Sale. Whenever I see baby stuff (or any type of toys or games) on deep clearance I buy them. I stock up on baby items and stick them in my closet for upcoming showers. I recently picked up a bunch of cute Easter onesies for $1.00 a piece (none of them said Easter, they were just pastel colors) to keep for future gifts.
  • Use Coupons. Sales combined with coupons are my favorite way to get free and really cheap baby stuff. Johnson and Johnson baby products often go on sale and combined with a coupon you can get them for free. I recently found a sale on baby lotion, body wash, and powder. All of the items were $2.00 a piece. Combined with a $0.75 coupon that doubled at the grocery store I got them for $0.50 a piece. They typically retail for $4-6.00 each!

Even the Cat Knows Coupons Are Serious Business

  • Give Coupons. Sounds a little strange, but diapers, formula and food can get really expensive. A few years back a friend of mine was feeding a pretty expensive formula. She was always asking me for the formula coupons from my paper. She had her shower after the baby was born, so to surprise her, I gathered a bunch of papers from my friends and clipped a whole stack of the $5.00 coupons for the formula she used. She told me it was the best ?gift? anyone gave her.

Once I buy and make all the gifts, I put it them in a basket and tie it up with a big ribbon. Easy Peasy and really fun. I?ve received really good feedback from friends and family who have loved their baby gifts.

Berkeley SHIP FAQs - UHS Tang Center

Berkeley SHIP 2013-14 Plan Details Revealed

University Health Services (UHS) is proud to share the details of Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), the new campus-operated student health insurance plan for 2013-14.

In early May, Chancellor Birgeneau announced that UC Berkeley would leave UC SHIP and return to our own campus-based student insurance plan for the next academic year. Berkeley SHIP maintains all the same comprehensive coverage students rely on, plus lifting of all insurance caps, including the lifetime maximum and annual pharmacy caps. We also welcome new insurance carriers: Aetna Student Health (medical and mental health), MetLife (dental coverage) and VSP (vision coverage). UHS has been working closely with our new carriers to ensure a seamless transition to Berkeley SHIP on August 15, 2013. Dependent and voluntary coverage will also continue to be made available through a separate plan, as they have been under UC SHIP. ?

Berkeley SHIP features the same comprehensive benefits as our former plan, plus:

  • Removal of caps on all benefits, including the lifting of lifetime, pharmacy and physical therapy maximums, and removing visit limits for services such as chiropractic and acupuncture
  • Reduction of Specialty office visit co-pay to $15 (previously $20)
  • Plan year for vision and dental benefits are now aligned with SHIP medical coverage plan year August 15-August 14
  • Premiums for Berkeley SHIP 2013-14: Undergraduates $1007 per semester, Graduate students $1386 per semester
  • See full benefits here.

?

Will I be able to use the same providers with Berkeley SHIP?
Care provided at UHS will remain unchanged, with the same campus providers and services students currently use. Local hospital and emergency providers remain the same as well. We have established new carriers for services outside of UHS covered by SHIP. Our three new carriers are working closely with us for a smooth transition back to a campus-plan: Aetna Student Health for medical and mental health coverage, MetLife for dental, and VSP for vision. Their vast networks already include many popular local providers available under our old plan. We are working proactively to identify any areas where there may be a gap in our previous and new off-campus provider networks, and encourage individual providers to join our new networks for off-campus care.

?

How is UC Berkeley going to manage the new plan?
UHS has more than 20 years of experience successfully managing a financially stable student insurance plan prior to joining UC SHIP. Our internal staff is coordinating with our new insurance carriers to get Berkeley SHIP in place for the new plan year beginning on August 15. Campus and UHS leaders are setting up a strong system to regularly monitor the financial health of Berkeley SHIP. A student oversight committee will also be established to provide input and advice on future benefit changes. Additionally, Berkeley SHIP is a fully-insured plan, meaning the financial risk is held by the insurance carriers instead of UC Berkeley.

?

If I want to waive out of Berkeley SHIP, when will I be able to do that?
Please complete the online waiver by July 15, 2013.?

?

Will any changes to the existing UC SHIP plan take place before the new Berkeley SHIP is implemented in August?
The transition to Berkeley SHIP for 2013-14 does not impact students?currently enrolled in UC SHIP 2012-13 ending on August 14, 2013. All benefits through UC SHIP for 2012-13 remain in place, with medical and mental health benefit coverage through August 14, and vision and dental coverage through July 31. Our waiver process also remains unchanged: all students will be automatically enrolled in Berkeley SHIP for 2013-14, with the option to waive out by July 15, 2013.

Verlander, Darvish set for showdown in Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Justin Verlander says it's May. Yu Darvish says it's not the first great opposing pitcher he's faced, and won't be his last.

True on all counts. These showdowns don't come along every day, though. And this one ? the AL's strikeout king against his potential heir ? is as enticing as they come.

The hard-throwing right-handers from Detroit and Texas will meet Thursday night in a billing that really hasn't been matched in Arlington since Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens faced off at old Arlington Stadium in 1989 ? five years before Rangers Ballpark opened.

"That's pretty good," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I would say that would be pretty interesting, I would think."

You would think. But you wouldn't be Verlander, the staff ace for Detroit. Or Darvish, the Rangers' second-year star. Or Texas manager Ron Washington.

"In May, getting excited, I try not to," Washington said. "It's great for the fans. If it doesn't go in our favor, it doesn't end our season. If Verlander has his stuff, it will be a long night. If Darvish has his stuff, it will be a long night. By long night, I mean runs will be at a premium, and it will be the first one to make a mistake."

That's pretty much the way it was on April 30, 1989, when Ryan and the Rangers beat Clemens and the Boston Red Sox 2-1. Both went eight innings. Clemens gave up six hits with six strikeouts. Ryan limited the Red Sox to three hits and fanned 11.

Ryan is now the CEO in Texas, and figures to be watching from his usual seat in the first row near home plate.

"It's a nice matchup," Leyland said. "It's good for baseball."

Darvish is baseball's strikeout leader with 80 and on pace for 300, which hasn't been reached since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling did it as Arizona teammates in 2002. Verlander has been the AL's strikeout leader three of the past four seasons.

Verlander doesn't push 100 mph on the radar gun quite as much as he used to, but always seems to find the velocity he needs in big moments.

Darvish can hit 95 mph and beyond, but the Japanese star is known more for varying speeds on his fastball and an array of pitches that had him within an out of a perfect game in his first start of the season at Houston.

"I saw him pitch last year a couple times," Verlander said. "I know he's striking out the world this year, but other than that, I haven't seen too much."

By their standards, both starters are coming off subpar games.

Darvish gave up two home runs and fell behind 3-1 in a rematch with the light-hitting Astros, but improved to 6-1 when the Rangers rallied and won 8-7 despite a leaky Texas bullpen. He "only" had eight strikeouts in seven innings after getting 14 for the second time this season in his previous start. He's had at least 10 strikeouts four times.

Verlander had his worst outing of the year in a 7-6 loss to Cleveland, giving up six hits and four runs ? three earned ? in just five innings. He walked a season-high five and struck out seven.

Still, Verlander (4-3) has the edge over Darvish in ERA, 1.93 to 2.73.

"When I made the decision to come to the big leagues, I knew that I was going to be facing a lot of great pitchers," Darvish said through an interpreter. "I wasn't just thinking Verlander but there are many other great pitchers as well."

And Verlander isn't just thinking Darvish, or big matchup, especially this early.

"You don't need to get too amped up, especially for a game in May, and try to do too much," Verlander said. "That's the wrong way to approach it."

Washington sees the same approach from his prized ace-in-the-making.

"Because he's a competitor, he knows who's on the other side," Washington said. "But to stick your chest out and say, 'I relish that,' it's a game in May. He wants to win it as bad as Verlander wants to win it, but it's certainly not a championship or World Series matchup. It's just a ballgame that's on the schedule."

But it is at least a little special.

Google+ gets a new multi-column card design and ability to automatically add hashtags

Today, at Google I/O 2013, Big G revealed a new look for its social network. Starting later today, Google+ users will be seeing their social content in a new way thanks to a multi-column format fit for any size screen. The home page for G+ now has up to 3 columns populated with individual cards for posts and pictures, and the social network can intelligently learn the content of those posts and automatically add related hashtags for you. Columns appear or disappear depending upon the size of your screen, and cards can be flipped to reveal editing options, or moved to suit users' aesthetic tastes. Should you have the requisite screen real estate, pictures and videos expand to the width of multiple columns to further provide a more visually pleasing social experience. In order to eliminate clutter, Google + has adopted a familiar looking left-side menu layout that disappears until a hovering cursor (or presumably a swiping finger) reveals it.

91% Gimme The Loot

All Critics (56) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (5)

'Gimme the Loot' is ... meandering and a little shallow. And even at 79 minutes it feels a little too long for what's essentially the film equivalent of a short story.

A thousand-watt jolt of mischief, a spunky, funky, ebullient indie that packs its 81 minutes with cinematic exhilaration.

It may be a slight movie, but it has its sunny charms.

A movie about teenage taggers in the Bronx should be fast and raw, scruffy and loose, and Adam Leon's Gimme the Loot is just that.

As it lopes along, the movie offers a warm but very sharp portrait of New York's have-nots and their uneasy relationship with the haves.

"Gimme the Loot" shouldn't be as appealing and exuberant as it is, it really shouldn't.

The film's strong suit is its use of locations.

The film is episodic and determinedly offbeat, funny at its best, boring at its worst.

Shot on the streets of New York in a loose, freeform style, this lively comedy-drama feels somewhat underdeveloped, leaving us doubtful about its realism.

It's a great deal of fun, emotionally touching, and even surprisingly old-fashioned.

Some of the movie doesn't exactly convince, and some of the scenes have an actors-improv feel to them, but there's always plenty of humour and energy.

Endlessly entertaining, refreshingly light-hearted and bursting with summer soul, Gimme The Loot joins the pantheon of great New York movies.

It's a shaggy dog story with a certain amount of charm but not nearly enough drama.

The movie is unpolished, and it matters not a jot, because Leon has written super roles for these kids and invests their relationship with such sly feeling.

Hickson walks the line between bravado and vulnerability, while Washington has a charisma, spark and beauty that should ensure this won't be the last we see of her.

Bolstered by a low-key but assured aesthetic and a soundtrack of vintage soul and doo-wop, the film is infectiously enjoyable, with frequently amusing insights and an affable shagginess.

Out of nowhere, Adam Leon might just have delivered the first great New York film of the decade.

Charming and engaging low-budget indie with a witty script, likeable characters, a strong sense of time and place and a pair of terrific performances from its two young leads.

Funny and freewheeling, it's a joy.

A slim, low-budget coming-of-age tale whose richness lies entirely in its interstices. A keenly observed work that celebrates the unfettered joys of youth, and rewards by reminding of the power of a simple tale told well.

Simultaneously real and hopeful, "Loot" has almost no plot, but when the setting is so fresh and the characters feel so raw and alive, who needs one?

Ghetto laughs with a sophisticated point of view.

Angry Birds Maker Rovio Will Now Publish And Market Select Third-Party Games

Rovio-Entertainment-Logo-HD-Wallpaper_Vvallpaper.NetRovio Entertainment, maker of the popular line of “Angry Birds” games, announced today that its expanding its business to include third-party titles, which it will publish, distribute and market to consumers. The new program is being called “Rovio Stars,” and makes available the company’s expertise as well as its marketing teams to other publishers. The first title to be released under the new effort is “Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage,” by Nitrome Ltd. The Icebreaker game, which follows the adventures of a lone Viking, will be followed by medieval adventure and puzzle game “Tiny Thief,” made by 5 Ants. This is the first time Rovio has included third-party titles in its lineup, the company announced this morning via a blog post and press release. “We want to help the developers to give these games that last coat of polish, publish the games and find their audience,” said Rovio’s Director of Development?Kalle Kaivola. “We?re focusing on a small, select number of games, and each Rovio Stars launch will be an event of its own.” That “last coat of polish” means Rovio will actually assist its partners in finalizing game production and with post-production, the company explains. Rovio notes that it’s looking for titles in “an advanced stage of production” – that is, in either alpha or playable format. Rovio’s experts will specifically help to mentor developers in order to “turn their games into blockbusters,” as well as market them, provide PR, and help publishers distribute titles to all the relevant app stores. Developers can now apply for consideration as one of Rovio’s next picks on the Rovio Stars dedicated website, where the company provides a submission form. Interested parties can attach screenshots and/or video alongside a description of their game. For now, only mobile titles are being considered.?Expecting a high volume of submission, the company says it can’t promise that everyone will receive a response. Rovio has long since moved beyond being only a games publisher, and is now more of media company offering cartoons, toys, and other merchandise like t-shirts, books, and even soda. It has debuted an “Angry Birds Space Encounter” at the Kennedy Space Center, and Angry Birds-themed parks. It also recently partnered with Dreamworks to release “The Croods,” a game based on the animated film. These expansions have been working well for the company so far. In April, Rovio announced its 2012 sales were up 101 percent?to $195

89% The Angels' Share

All Critics (80) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (71) | Rotten (9)

If you want to look for it, you'll find a layer of metaphor (the distilling process as a symbol of the characters' evolution) and social-realist commentary amid the gentle, life-affirming laughs.

[Ken Loach] and his longtime screenwriter, Paul Laverty, find a good balance between drama and wacky character moments.

A lark, but it's a serious-minded lark, addressing issues of class and culture, the haves and have-nots.

Charming enough to satisfy even the trenchant-commentary crowd.

The plot thickens, but the mood grows lighter.

Unexpectedly, and blithely, amusing.

The title, by the way, refers to the distillation process: the 2% of whisky that evaporates in the barrel is known as "the angel's share." I'm afraid there's more than 2% evaporation going on in Loach's latest.

Much like a stiff drink at the end of a long day, "The Angels' Share" gets the job done, but you're probably not going to remember it in the morning.

Loach's realism lends an easygoing, ramshackle quality to the film that smoothes over any lack of tightness.

Director Ken Loach's latest glimpse of the U.K. underclass is really two rather different movies, either of which I would've enjoyed on their own. But they don't really fit together in any satisfying or even logical way.

A fairy tale with its feet firmly on the ground.

Whether Robbie pulls off his caper should be left for the audience to discover. But Loach's great cinematic switcheroo goes off almost without a hitch.

As heartwarming and uplifting as any tale could be that features vicious beatings and grand larceny.

While it has some likable characters, particularly its charismatic lead, it's impossible to shake the feeling that we've seen this movie before.

Lead actor Paul Brannigan, the product of Glasgow's working-class East End, is a natural.

The usual Loachian elements are all in place, but there is a gentle spirit at work here as well, and not just the alcoholic spirits around which the plot revolves.

The Angels' Share is a stellar bit of activist cinema with a light touch.

Sweet-natured and high-spirited, it's a fanciful fable with a wee dash of magical realism.

This is one of the most likable movies so far this year.
