Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill., is launching a new fundraising effort aimed at helping younger Republican lawmakers, and boosting his profile as a rainmaker.
Schock's ?30 for 30? campaign is working to raise $30,000 for most GOP lawmakers in their 30s. In the 2014 election cycle, Schock wants to raise money mostly for the roughly 20 GOP members under 40 and then expand the list in 2014 to include candidates.
The effort is also an acknowledgment that Republicans have to do better among younger voters, and Schock thinks electing younger members will help.
?We?ve struggled with that at times,? he said. ?We?ve unfairly been tagged as the old, gray white-hairs.?
Schock, quite literally, is the cover boy for young Republicans. At 32, he?s probably best known for displaying his ripped abs on the cover of Men?s Health.
On Friday in the National Republican Campaign Committee boardroom, Schock brought together about 35 representatives from some of the biggest PACs in Washington, including UPS, Motorola Solutions, Caterpillar, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
The campaign is different than the Young Guns program set up by Republican Reps. Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, and Kevin McCarthy. Shock says he jokes with Cantor and McCarthy that ?only in Congress could you be 60 and considered a Young Gun.?
