The Field Of Dreams | OtterRealm.net

Cal Sate Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is excited to unveil its new recreation field, which recently went under construction this past September. With intramural sports growing in popularity amongst CSUMB students, the new recreation field will provide a designated and more appropriate area for intramural sports to be played.

Within the past several years, CSUMB has been experiencing a growth in student body, resulting in the expansion of student-athletes. As an effect of such growth, intramurals and sports clubs were required to share field facilities due to the lack of practice space located on the CSUMB campus. ?The field conditions were an issue,? Alyssa Malfatti, HCOM said. She continued, ?Parts of the field would start to get muddy or worn out, so the real issue was mainly the overuse and proper use of the field.? Sports Clubs, a part of Interclub Council, felt specific sports needs should be met. Because of this increased demand for access to sports fields, Otter Student Union [OSU] collaboratively created a proposal with Interclub Council. This proposal voiced that the university, as it stood, was in need of practice and competition facilities.

Although the field is currently under construction, the project as a whole is expected be a short process. According to Rick Dawson, CSUMB?s Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation, "It's a rather quick project. From beginning to end, it's about 45 days. The field will actually be completed by the end of November and will be able to be used by the beginning of spring semester." Dawson explains the gap in time is due to the planting and growing of the grass, which should be fully intact by spring.

The recreation field will be replacing the old baseball field, located next to North Quad housing. Some features of the recreation field will include fencing, an irrigation system, grass, an access gate, and sidewalk. However, the university will receive minimal funding and will be unable to provide everything it envisions. Dawson clarified, "Because the intramurals and sports club's budget is somewhat limited, many of the features will need to be fundraised for, such as our bigger ticket items, like bleachers, port-o-potties, shed, scoreboard, garbage cans, and lighting."

The new Recreation Field is expected to open in Jan. 2013. The grand opening will include a ceremonial kickoff, in celebration of all who took part in this project vision. Future plans include fundraising, hosting camps, working with youth on various skills, and improving overall health and wellness. While looking back on this operation as a whole, Dawson adds, "This process has highlighted for me what CSUMB is all about: Collaboration. Students, staff, and administration, all working together for the students."
