Bankruptcy: Some Tips You Should Know About | Siben & Siben ...

TIP! Do not drag your feet when trying to figure out if bankruptcy is right for you. Although it may be tough to admit you are in financial trouble, the more you wait the higher the debt becomes.

There are quite a number of people who have been affected by the economy, and now find themselves buried in debt. They have lots of collection agencies looking for them and they have trouble paying their bills. If this situation sounds familiar, you may decide to consider filing personal bankruptcy. Keep reading to see if this is a viable solution for you.

TIP! Before declaring bankruptcy, it is important to know your rights. There are unscrupulous debt collectors who may suggest that your obligations cannot be included in a bankruptcy.

Take the time to find a simpler solution to your financial issues, before filing for bankruptcy. For example, you may want to consider a credit counseling plan if you have small debts. Also, if you just contact your creditors and speak to them plainly and truthfully, the odds are good that you can negotiate a better payment structure that you can afford.

Credit Card

TIP! Your lawyer should not make decisions for you. The complexities of bankruptcy law will be familiar to your lawyer.

Do not think bankruptcy is the answer to getting rid of taxes you owe. Some people who file pay their taxes with credit cards, then immediately file for bankruptcy on those cards. They do this thinking they can skip paying taxes somehow because they left the balance on their credit card. Unfortunately, you?ll just end up having to pay your credit card balance plus interest.

TIP! For example, if a student loan is the major player in your debt, bankruptcy will be of little benefit. Even though laws are different in different states, debt from student loans are some of the most difficult kinds of debt to be discharged.

Do a little bit of research into the regulations having to do with filing for bankruptcy before you begin the process. Without knowing the exact rules, you could inadvertently run into serious issues that could ultimately lead to your bankruptcy failing. It is even possible to make the sorts of errors that can cause your case to be dismissed. Make sure you check into your case and see that you have the paperwork filled out correctly. This will ensure your bankruptcy will go smoothly.

TIP! Several of those who?ve already filed for bankruptcy vow that they won?t have a credit card ever again. This is not wise, since credit cards can help to rebuild credit.

It is important that you do not transfer assets of any kind to another individual within one year of filing for bankruptcy. Such an action would be considered an effort to hide valuable assets and might cause your case to be dismissed prematurely. Many assets may even be safe no matter what, making such gestures unnecessary. In any case, it is not right to transfer your assets, so if you have transferred any, be sure to wait before filing bankruptcy.

Credit Cards

TIP! If you realize that you do not qualify when it comes to the Homestead Exemption when you file for chapter 7 bankruptcy, then you might be able to use chapter 13 bankruptcy when it comes to your mortgage. There may be situations in which it makes more sense to convert a Chapter 7 case to a Chapter 13, but it is important to discuss such a strategy with your lawyer.

You should avoid paying your taxes with credit cards and then immediately file for bankruptcy. In most states, this debt won?t be discharged, and you could end up owing the IRS a whole lot more. Should the tax be dischargeable, the debt is often dischargeable as well. So, in short, do not use your credit cards to pay off debts right before you file for bankruptcy.

TIP! Before you decide to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you should consider what your bankruptcy might have on others, as your family and friends may be affected. When filing Chapter 7, you are not legally responsible for the debts in your name.

Do a check of your credit report from all the top companies who report on consumer credit after two or three months have passed following your bankruptcy. Errors occur, so make sure things appear exactly as they should. Challenge discrepancies as soon as possible in order to repair your credit.

TIP! Find out how much you owe to your different creditors. Be sure your list is complete as it will form the basis of your personal bankruptcy filing.

Do your homework so you thoroughly understand the laws pertaining to bankruptcy before you file. For instance, somebody cannot transfer assets from a filer?s name up to a year after they file. It is also illegal for someone who files for bankruptcy to drastically increase their debts on credit cards immediately before filing.

TIP! A good tip when it comes to personal bankruptcy is to reconsider having a divorce, if you are finding yourself constantly in a hard financial situation. Many people file for bankruptcy right after getting divorced because they cannot deal with their financial hardships.

As you can see, there is a lot of help available if you are considering filing for personal bankruptcy. Always remember that people who become informed before going through the motions do much better with everything involved. Take your time to read and to understand these tips before implementing them and using them to your advantage

Coral Growth Pics - Atlanta Reef Club Forums

Thought it would be fun to select a few of my corals and document the progress. These are all very easy corals so I am sure it you old hands wont be overly impressed but for those of you who are new to all this (like me) you can see how some easy stuff can be a lot of fun.

First up is one of my favorites that was given to me by wmboots. This Blue Tip Stag Horn has been fragged many times, the entire colony has been cut off at the base and moved several times. Each time, the it starts growing again in the old spot. :-)

The before pic was 12-30-11 and the after pic was 10-16-12

Next up is a Green Candy Cane. Again the before pic was 12-30-11 and the after can be seen in the same pic as the stag horn. They are not open as much as normal in the after pic but you get the idea.

Next item, Duncans. Before pic is 12-30-11 and after is 10-16-12

The green birdsnest has been a joy to watch. I love these things. Again 12-30-11 and 10-16-12 time frame.

Next up is my Hammer. Same dates as the others.

Edit:

Edit: OK, I guess I need to wait for someone to comment so I can then post a few more. hehehe There is one unknown coral that has amazed me with it's recovery and growth and I would love to know what it is.

How Sandy turned into a superstorm

The combination of a winter-time jet stream, warm tropical air and a full moon is turning Sandy into a huge and complicated storm that has the potential to devastate the Northeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic. TODAY's Matt Lauer reports.

By Alan Boyle

Hurricane Sandy is posing a monster challenge for weather forecasters and emergency agencies, due to an amazing combination of meteorological factors, but what's just as amazing is how well they've been able to predict what seemed to be an unpredictable disaster.

"It looks like we've been fairly consistent on this, even five days out," Chris Landsee, science operations officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, told me today. "I think when all is said and done, on the track forecast, we're going to be quite accurate."

Sandy's path, which took a left turn from the Atlantic to slam head-on into the heavily populated Northeast, is just one of the unusual aspects of this storm. "The size of this system, the late-season nature, and the track?? all these are fairly unique characteristics," Landsee said. To look for precedents, you have to go back to infamous hurricanes such as Agnes in 1972, Hazel in 1954, even the great storms of 1944, 1938, 1815 and?1804. But today, the region is so much more populous and developed that the impact is certain to be far greater.

Here are five factors that have turned Sandy into a superstorm:

Northerly track: Atlantic tropical storms most commonly tear through the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and lose energy as they pass over the U.S mainland. This storm, however, crept along the Eastern Seaboard, where waters that were warmer than usual for this time of year kept the storm alive. As the storm moved northward, it morphed into a hybrid storm, drawing additional strength from the differential between the storm's warm air and cold northern air from the jet stream.

"There's a transformation that this system is undergoing," Landsee explained. "This is actually evolving into a winter storm, and later, a nor'easter." One result of this evolution is that the storm system has widened to more than 800 miles in diameter, stretching from the Carolinas to Maine and Canada.

NASA / NOAA

NOAA's GOES-13 weather satellite shows the storm system associated with Hurricane Sandy covering the northeastern United States even before landfall on Monday.

The left turn:?Hurricanes that get so far north could drift off into the cold Atlantic to die?? but they can also be pushed into the mainland, as Hurricane Irene was last year. Irene followed a path that was roughly parallel to the coastline, but Sandy took a hard left turn that put it on a course for a direct, perpendicular strike on the coast. That's because a cold front on the mainland is drawing the storm westward, while the current state of a weather pattern known as the North Atlantic Oscillation is blocking the storm from heading eastward.?

Storm surge: Sandy's top sustained winds of 85 miles per hour typically wouldn't rate as a superstorm, but its effects will be magnified, Landsee said. "Even though it's not a 'major' hurricane by any means ... there is substantial threat because of the storm surge and because of the rainfall. There's going to be flooding. Both of those factors are going to be killers," he said. The storm surge is projected to range from 6 to 11 feet. One of the big reasons for such a high surge is that the waters off the coast of New York and New Jersey are so shallow: As the surge from the deeper ocean nears the coastline, all that water piles up to create a higher wave.

Full moon:?Another reason for the huge storm surge is the fact that the moon is hitting its full phase just as Sandy is making landfall. The celestial lineup of the sun, moon and Earth contributes to higher-than-normal high tides.?

Winter storm: Sandy is such a late-season storm that it's running into winter weather in the northeastern United States, which is adding an extra dimension to the misery. "I have not been around long enough to see a hurricane forecast with a snow advisory in it," Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told NBC's TODAY. The storm could trigger up to 3 feet of snow in the Appalachians, the National Weather Service reported. The Weather Channel's Tom Niziol said that "an amazing combination of factors" have come together to make Sandy a threat due to the snow as well as the rain.

Landsee and other forecasters may marvel at the factors behind what some have called a "perfect storm" or "Frankenstorm," and there'll surely be lots of lessons learned for future weather modeling. But that's not what's uppermost on their mind right now. "What's really important are the impacts," Landsee said. To keep on top of the storm, and to keep safe, keep an eye on NBC News' hurricane coverage.

UN says 22,000 displaced in Myanmar unrest

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? Victims of Myanmar's latest explosion of Muslim-Buddhist violence fled to already packed displacement camps along the country's western coast Sunday, with a top U.N. official saying the unrest has forced more than 22,000 people from their homes.

State television reported the casualty toll has risen to 84 dead and 129 injured over the past week in nine townships in Rakhine state. The figures have not been broken down by ethnic group, but New York-based Human Rights Watch has said Rohingya Muslims bore the brunt of the unrest and the true death toll may be far higher.

On Sunday, wooden boats carrying some refugees arrived outside the state capital, Sittwe. The people trudged to the nearby Thechaung camp, a place already home to thousands of Rohingya who took refuge there after a previous wave of violence in June.

"I fled my hometown, Pauktaw, on Friday because there is no security at all," said 42-year-old fisherman Maung Myint, who arrived on a boat carrying 40 other people, including his wife and six children. "My house was burned to ashes and I have no money left."

Another Muslim refugee said she fled her village, Kyaukphyu, on Thursday after attackers set her home on fire.

"We don't feel safe," said 40-year-old Zainabi, a fish seller who left with her two sons, aged 12 and 14. "I wish the violence would stop so we can live peacefully."

Human Rights Watch released dramatic satellite imagery of Kyaukphyu on Saturday showing a vast, predominantly Rohingya swath of the village in ashes. The destruction included more than 800 buildings and floating barges.

There were no reports of new violence Sunday. It was unclear what sparked the latest clashes, but ill will between Muslims and Buddhists in Rakhine state goes back decades and has its roots in a dispute over the Rohingya's origins. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are seen as foreign intruders who came from Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

Today, the Rohingya also face official discrimination, a policy encouraged by Myanmar's previous military regimes to enlist popular support among other groups. A 1984 law formally excluded them as one of the country's 135 ethnicities, meaning most are denied basic civil rights and are deprived of citizenship.

Neighboring Bangladesh, which also does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, says thousands of Rohingya refugees have sought to flee there by boat. Its policy, however, is to refuse them entry.

Rights groups say Myanmar's failure to address the root causes of the crisis means the situation may get worse.

Over the weekend, Border Affairs Minister Lt. General Thein Htay traveled to the affected areas with the U.N. resident and humanitarian coordinator in Myanmar, Ashok Nigam.

Nigam said 22,587 were displaced and they included both Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, but he gave no breakdown.

Speaking to The Associated Press on Sunday while visiting Thechaung camp, Nigam said getting aid to the new wave of displaced people will be a challenge as some fled on boats and others have sought refuge on isolated hilltops.

"The situation is certainly very grave and we are working with the government to provide urgent aid to these people," he said.

Some 4,600 homes were also destroyed, according to the U.N, which said in a separate statement that it had begun distributing emergency food and shelter supplies with its humanitarian partners to refugees in urgent need of help.

The latest unrest pushes the total displaced to nearly 100,000 since sectarian clashes broke out in June, when at least 90 people died and 3,000 homes were destroyed. That unrest left about 75,000 people, mostly Rohingya, living in refugee camps since then. Curfews have been in place in some areas since the earlier violence and were extended this past week.

"It is critically important that the government ensures that the rule of law prevails, prevents any further spreading of this violence and continues to communicate strong messages of harmony," Nigam said in a statement later Sunday.

"The violence, fear and mistrust are contrary to the democratic transition and economic and social development that Myanmar is committed to," Nigam said. "It should not become an impediment to progress."

Oakley's Heads-Up Airwave Goggles Will Make You a Robo-Skier

1. Oakley Airwave

Oakley's Airwave ski goggles use the latest heads-up display technology from Recon Instruments.

[More from Mashable: Friends Give Coworker a Heart-Melting World Series Surprise [VIDEO]]

Imagine hitting the slopes while your favorite song is wirelessly pumped into your eardrums, GPS technology tracks your friends, and speed and jump altitudes are projected into one corner of your field of vision.

No, this isn't some futuristic dream -- it becomes reality on Oct. 31, with the release of Oakley's new Airwave ski goggles. It features a heads-up, Google Glass-like display, as well as high-tech analytics and data-tracking capabilities.

[More from Mashable: How Social Media Is Introducing NBA Fans to a Budding Star]

Powered by Recon Instruments' latest heads-up technology, the goggles allow wearers to see information, such as how fast they're traveling, maps, temperature, playlists, locations of friends, and incoming calls and messages projected, into their field of vision. All of this is displayed in the lower righthand corner of the goggles -- so users can still see the snow in front of them -- and appears to the eye as if it were displayed on a 14-inch screen five feet away.

After purchasing the goggles for $599 and downloading a corresponding iPhone, iPod Touch or Android app, wearers operate the gadget using a wrist-mounted remote control. They can then track friends who've downloaded the free app, too, but haven't necessarily bought the goggles themselves. Text messages and phone calls are displayed in the goggles, so users can either respond quickly with customizable stock messages via the wrist remote -- "call you later," for example -- or take out their phone for lengthier replies. The remote can also control music, which is played via Bluetooth in the goggles.

SEE ALSO: Could Google Glass Change Pro Sports Forever?

The app comes pre-loaded with route maps for some 600 resorts worldwide. As skiers traverse those courses, data on max speed, highest jumps, descent in altitude and comparisons to past runs are all tracked and stored. This info is viewable within the goggles via the app and heads-up display, and is available online. An Airwave developer kit also lets programming-minded users create their own third-party apps to use with the goggles.

I got a chance to demo the Airwave goggles earlier this month, and came away impressed. Granted, sitting on a couch is a far cry from smashing down snowy mountains, but the heads-up display was clear, simple to navigate and non-invasive. Tucked away in the bottom right of the goggles, it seemed like something that would be easy to ignore or quickly glance at without losing concentration.

Oakley CEO Colin Baden told me that the ski goggles are likely just the first of many heads-up display products from the sports eyewear giant. Versions for runners, cyclists and motor sports could be on the way soon, and the potential for expansion, he said, is "pretty infinite."

Do Oakley's Airwave goggles seem like something that could make their way onto your Christmas wish list? Let us know in the comments.

WEATHER REPORT Night Passage music review by yamarolort

4 stars This is really one of those albums that requires a few listenings; the music has to grow on you a bit. I'll be the first to admit that I was a tad meh'ish upon my first listening, but by the 3rd or 4th listening, I was really starting to appreciate what was going on. You can't fairly compare this to other WR albums because the direction is obviously different than it's predecessors. And to me, that's the inherent beauty of Night Passages; it's it's own musical entity, so to speak. The musicality of previous releases is still there, as are the compositional skills. Give this album a fair shake and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Morocco's 'Les chevaux de Dieux" wins Grand prix of Valladolid film ...

October 27, 2012 (MAP)

Feature film, les Chevaux de Dieu (God?s horses) of Morocco?s director, Nabil Ayouch, has won the Grand prix of the 57th edition of international week of cinema in Valladolid (seminci), in Spain.

The Best Director prize was awarded to Jacques Audiard for the feature, De rouille et d?os (of rust and bone), while the best actor prize was won by Elle Fanning and Greisy Mena.

Les chevaux de Dieu, which represented Morocco in the Cannes film festival, is an adaptation of the novel ?Les Etoiles de Sidi Moumen? (the stars of Sidi Moumen [neighborhood]) by Mahi Binebine, which speaks on the phenomenon of terrorism. The movie was shot in Fes and Casablanca for a budget of three million euros.

Ayouch has directed a number of movies, which gained international fame, including his last work, My Land, a documentary film about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has also directed Mektoub, Ali Zaoua, which competed at the 1998 and 2001 Oscars.

A weak finish for stocks as earnings news weighs

Stocks are closing mostly lower after another batch of weak earnings reports weighs on the market.

The Dow Jones industrial average managed to close with a gain of nearly four points at 13,107 Friday after spending much of the day in the red.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gave up a point to end at 1,412 and the Nasdaq composite edged up less than two points at 2,988.

Poor earnings from Goodyear, Verisign, Interpublic and other companies disappointed investors.

A pickup in U.S. economic growth in the third quarter wasn't enough to get buyers back in the market.

Three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was in line with the recent average at 3.2 billion shares.

New study brings a doubted exoplanet 'back from the dead'

Saturday, October 27, 2012

A second look at data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is reanimating the claim that the nearby star Fomalhaut hosts a massive exoplanet. The study suggests that the planet, named Fomalhaut b, is a rare and possibly unique object that is completely shrouded by dust.

"Although our results seriously challenge the original discovery paper, they do so in a way that actually makes the object's interpretation much cleaner and leaves intact the core conclusion, that Fomalhaut b is indeed a massive planet," said Thayne Currie, an astronomer formerly at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and now at the University of Toronto.

The discovery study reported that Fomalhaut b's brightness varied by about a factor of two and cited this as evidence that the planet was accreting gas. Follow-up studies then interpreted this variability as evidence that the object actually was a transient dust cloud instead.

In the new study, Currie and his team reanalyzed Hubble observations of the star from 2004 and 2006. They easily recovered the planet in observations taken at visible wavelengths near 600 and 800 nanometers, and made a new detection in violet light near 400 nanometers. In contrast to the earlier research, the team found that the planet remained at constant brightness.

The team attempted to detect Fomalhaut b in the infrared using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, but was unable to do so. The non-detections with Subaru and Spitzer imply that Fomalhaut b must have less than twice the mass of Jupiter.

Another contentious issue has been the object's orbit. If Fomalhaut b is responsible for the ring's offset and sharp interior edge, then it must follow an orbit aligned with the ring and must now be moving at its slowest speed. The speed implied by the original study appeared to be too fast. Additionally, some researchers argued that Fomalhaut b follows a tilted orbit that passes through the ring plane.

Using the Hubble data, Currie's team established that Fomalhaut b is moving with a speed and direction consistent with the original idea that the planet's gravity is modifying the ring.

"What we've seen from our analysis is that the object's minimum distance from the disk has hardly changed at all in two years, which is a good sign that it's in a nice ring-sculpting orbit," explained Timothy Rodigas, a graduate student in the University of Arizona and a member of the team.

Currie's team also addressed studies that interpret Fomalhaut b as a compact dust cloud not gravitationally bound to a planet. Near Fomalhaut's ring, orbital dynamics would spread out or completely dissipate such a cloud in as little as 60,000 years. The dust grains experience additional forces, which operate on much faster timescales, as they interact with the star's light.

"Given what we know about the behavior of dust and the environment where the planet is located, we think that we're seeing a planetary object that is completely embedded in dust rather than a free-floating dust cloud," said team member John Debes, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

A paper describing the findings has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Because astronomers detect Fomalhaut b by the light of surrounding dust and not by light or heat emitted by its atmosphere, it no longer ranks as a "directly imaged exoplanet." But because it's the right mass and in the right place to sculpt the ring, Currie's team thinks it should be considered a "planet identified from direct imaging."

Fomalhaut was targeted with Hubble most recently in May by another team. Those observations are currently under scientific analysis and are expected to be published soon.

LG E960 support manuals confirm Nexus 4 name, 8GB and 16GB configurations

The information leaks ahead Google's Android event next week continue to flow, with the latest thanks to support manuals on LG's Australian and UK websites. While we're already familiar with the phone's hardware thanks to a detailed Belarusian review, the manuals confirm it is going to be called the Nexus 4, and that along with the 8GB version we've seen there will definitely be a 16GB edition available. As you can see above, it also includes an induction coil for wireless charging and excludes any microSD slots for additional storage. This all comes after two separate Nexus 10 leaks earlier today, as well as a report by Wired of a lost Nexus 4 recovered in a San Francisco bar (sound familiar?) last month. Hit the source link below to check out the LG E960 PDF for yourself (you may need to select the "show all" radio button), although there's only a few diagrams and support info waiting within.

Sex, Love, Marriage and Middle Children | Psychology Today

[Geek Pride welcomes guest blogger Katrin Schumann, co-author of?The Secret Power of Middle Children:?How Middleborns Can Harness Their Unexpected and Remarkable Abilities,?which recently came out in paperback.]

The way we view our most fundamental intimate relationships is undergoing a seismic shift. Politicians and voters are locked in contentious debates about gay marriage and who has the right to marry whom--yet many people are skeptical about the very institution of marriage itself. They're waiting longer and longer to marry, and heading for the divorce courts at the first sign of trouble.

So... what are Americans looking for in a long-term relationship? What makes them work? Do we still value loyalty--just not the legal document that binds us to our promises? Surprisingly, we can learn a lot about what makes us happy in our couplings from, of all people, middle children.

1) In Marriage, Americans Value Fidelity Above all Else

When asked in 2010 by the Pew Research Center, "What a makes marriage work?" people listed faithfulness above all other traits (such as sharing chores or religious beliefs). This means that middleborns are actually better off than other birth orders in terms of finding longevity in their marriages. Why is that? A study of birth order researcher Dr. Catherine Salmon's showed that middles are significantly less likely than other birth orders to cheat in a long-term romantic relationship--80 percent said they never strayed (compared to 65 percent of firsts, and 53 percent of lasts). If you want a good marriage, do like middles: place high value on dependability and commitment.

2) Having a "Happy Sexual Relationship" is Critical to Marital Success

Sex matters; studies show that when couples are intimate frequently they're happier. Dr. Salmon conducted groundbreaking research comparing sexual attitudes to actual behavior, with some astonishing results. Middles are less judgmental of other's sexual interests and more willing to experiment in the bedroom. But this permissive attitude to sex doesn't lead them into hot water--on the contrary. Middles are actually less likely to cheat than other birth orders. Other studies have also suggested that middles, and people married to middles, are more satisfied overall by their marriages.

3) Singles Do Still Care About Matrimony

The most recent Census data reveals some stark new numbers about marriage: in 1960, 72 percent of all adults ages 18 and older were married, compared to only 51 percent today. But even though fewer Americans are getting hitched, people still yearn for deep and lasting connections to others: Pew Research found that 61 percent of people who never married would like to do so one day, and only 12 percent said no thanks. Middle children rank highest--by far--among birth orders for their generosity and loyalty, and are the least likely of all birth orders to seek marriage counseling, need therapy, or be neurotic. Could it be their selfless tendencies that make middles such even-keeled partners, and help them sustain long and happy marriages?

4) Negotiating Skills and a Willingness to Compromise Lead to Excellent Partnerships

Because of being "squeezed" in their families as kids, middles develop great skills in negotiation, empathy, and openness. They also place high value on strong social ties and support, often showing greater loyalty and connection to "chosen family" than to their actual families. These traits are highly valuable in managing romantic relationships (as well as friendships) outside the family. As two Israeli researchers concluded, "middles are like type O blood, they work for everyone."

Clearly, marriage as an institution is undergoing seismic change these days. Though the rules are changing rapidly, it remains the case that the majority of Americans prefer being paired in lasting relationships than living alone. Looking at the qualities middles embody--loyalty, generosity, openness and flexibility, to name just a few--we can all learn a thing or two about how to turn the dream of this kind of lasting commitment into a reality, regardless of our birth order.

Family on slain NJ girl silent on Facebook posts

CLAYTON, N.J. (AP) ? Relatives of a slain 12-year-old girl from southern New Jersey said Thursday they want to avoid jeopardizing the criminal case and will not comment on the revelation that three days before she disappeared, she may have exchanged online messages with one of the teenagers accused of killing her.

"We want swift justice for Autumn," said Paul Spadofora, a great uncle and godfather of Autumn Pasquale, whose body was found in a recycling bin Monday near the teenagers' home. "We don't want to jeopardize the case."

Two brothers, 15 and 17, were charged with murder and other crimes against the girl, who would have turned 13 on Oct. 29. Authorities say the younger boy lured her to their home by promising to trade bicycle parts.

Both teens are due in court Friday for a hearing on whether they should remain in a juvenile detention facility.

A Facebook account that appears to belong to Justin Robinson had a picture posted in August of a BMX bike. On Oct. 17, a post apparently from Autumn asked: "Is tht ur bike?"

The two exchanged a volley of messages in abbreviated language. He answered, "yeuop." She proclaimed, "Thts sexy!" He responded, "lol thx" and later added: "yess cme 2 my house."

The exchange is no longer available on Facebook, but someone took a screenshot and saved it to the photo-sharing site ImageShack.

Autumn disappeared Saturday, three days after the exchange.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office would not comment on the postings.

Authorities said Anita Saunders, the mother of the two suspects, called police because she was concerned about something one of her son's posted on Facebook. But police have not disclosed exactly what the posting said.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said the mother's tip led investigators to the recycling bin behind a vacant home next to hers where Autumn's body was found ? and to her sons.

Authorities have not released the names of the teens because they are charged as juveniles, though prosecutors say they are likely to seek to have the case moved to adult court.

Neighbors and other community members identify the boys as 17-year-old Dante Robinson and 15-year-old Justin Robinson. The boys' father and maternal grandfather both declined to speak about the boys on Thursday, but did not deny their names. Their names have been widely reported in the media.

Since the boys were arrested on Tuesday, the girl's family has criticized authorities for not having a more intense search sooner after she was reported missing ? and asked the state Attorney General's Office to investigate the response.

Dalton defended his office's response, saying officials "poured their hearts and souls" into the case. Up to 200 law enforcement officials and hundreds more volunteers joined the search.

Rebecca Edmonds, Single Mom, Dismissed From Air Force For Being Pregnant

Rebecca Edmonds, the daughter of a Navy captain, proudly followed in her father?s footsteps when she joined the armed forces. But her dream came to an abrupt halt when the Air Force found out that she was about to start a family of her own.

Edmonds, a graduate of Marquette University with a full scholarship from the Air Force, became pregnant 13 weeks before she was going to be commissioned as an officer, CNN reported. Six months into her pregnancy, she shared her news with the Air Force. In response, they revoked her $92,000 scholarship and ejected her from the ranks.

The Air Force strictly forbids single parents from enlisting -- a policy Edmonds alleges that she was unaware of when she found out she was pregnant. The Air Force put the single parent policy in place due to the difficult strains deployment puts on the children of single parents, according to CNN.

The U.S. military is committed to ensuring that enlisted members take care of family obligations, such as child care, before deploying for service. According to the 2012 research paper published by Indiana University ? Purdue University Indianapolis, a single parent must submit in writing that an individual not enlisted in the military will take responsibility over the child and individuals who do not comply could be immediately terminated from service.

The Air Force contends that if Edmonds was honest about her pregnancy from the beginning, she would not of been discharged so abruptly, according to CNN. In a letter written to Edmonds? attorney about the case, an Air Force official wrote, "If Ms. Edmonds had reported her pregnancy she would have been placed on medical recheck status until she gave birth.? The letter goes on to explain that Edmonds would only be able to be deployed ?if she were not a single parent, for example, if she were married, or had given the child up for adoption."

A policy that strictly forbids individuals from giving up custody of their child for the purpose of joining the ranks is outlined on the Air Force?s website. If a single parent attempting to join the Air Force indicates that their child is in the custody of someone else, they are required to acknowledge that ?his/her intent at the time of enlist was not to enter the Air Force with the express intention of regaining custody after enlistment.?

Edmonds isn?t the only single parent with dreams of joining the armed forces. In 2009, it was estimated that more than 30,000 single mothers had deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Researchers like Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Blanchard, the director of behavior medicine at Nellis Family Medicine Residency in Nevada, have have highlighted the need for more services for single parents in the military.

Although mothers serving their country face a unique set of battles when it comes to balancing their job and their family, many women in other professions have also alleged they were unjustly fired due to pregnancy. Jamera Lee Massop of Jamaica, N.Y. contends that she was abruptly fired from her job as an administrative assistant when she was six months pregnant. Jarretta Hamilton, previously a fourth-grade teacher in the Atlanta area, filed a lawsuit against her school district for being fired after telling her principal she was pregnant.

Edmonds case is currently under review. She told CNN that she hopes that her case will make the military reconsider its current policy on single parents enlisting for service.

In Animal Kingdom, Voting Of A Different Sort Reigns

A school of manini fish passes over a coral reef at Hanauma Bay in 2005, in Honolulu. Researchers say schooling behavior like the kind seen in fish helps groups of animals make better decisions than any one member of the group could.

As part of NPR's coverage of this year's presidential election, All Things Considered asked three science reporters to weigh in on the race. The result is a three-part series on the science of leadership. In Part 1, Alix Spiegel looked at the personalities of American presidents.

Voters could learn some things about choosing a leader from a fish. Or a chimp. Or an elephant.

That's because the animal kingdom, despite its name, tends to operate more like a democracy, says Iain Couzin, an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University.

"One common property we see in animal groups from schooling fish to flocking birds to primate groups is that they effectively vote to decide where to go and what to do," Couzin says.

When one fish heads toward a potential source of food, the other fish vote with their fins on whether to follow, he says. And this highly democratic process helps animals make decisions as a group that are better than those of any single member.

Successful animal leaders know they can't get too far ahead of their constituents, Couzin says.

"They seem to simply reconcile their own goal-oriented behavior with this tendency to align with others," he says. "Because if you don't tend to be influenced by others, you then leave the group behind, and you may get eaten by predators, or you lose the benefits of group living."

A large flock of starlings flies over a park at sunset in Algiers, Algeria, in 2006. Millions of birds migrate every year, arriving from Europe and crossing into Africa.

Findings like this are relevant to humans because we carry a lot of evolutionary baggage with us into the voting booth, Couzin says. And when it comes to leadership, he says, we are most like animals that live in groups and depend on cooperation to survive. And these groups tend to pick cooperative leaders.

So what about the idea that it's just the biggest or strongest animal in a group that calls the shots?

It's rarely that simple, says Mark van Vugt, an evolutionary psychologist from the VU University in Amsterdam. Take chimps, for example, he says.

"In chimpanzees, it's not necessarily the physically strongest individual who seizes the control over the group," van Vugt says. "It's usually the more cunning individual, someone who forms his coalitions well."

Animal leadership also demonstrates how groups choose different leaders for different situations, he says. Among elephants, for example, the de facto leader is usually the oldest female. But that can change, van Vugt says.

"When the group is attacked, it might be one of the dominant male members who takes control," he says. "But when it comes to knowledge problems and particularly where to find water, they then turn to the oldest female."

Some animal leaders have traits that voters might wish all human leaders had ? like unfailing honesty, van Vugt says.

Honeybees are a good example, he says. Their scouts lead by finding a food source and then communicating the location to other bees through something called a waggle dance.

"The interesting thing about it is in the signaling of the scout bees, there is no deception whatsoever," van Vugt says. "They want to do what is best for the hive. And I think that is a little bit dissimilar to humans."

Or chimps, whose leaders are often accomplished liars.

One way animals and people are clearly alike is that both are capable of choosing a bad leader, says Couzin.

"It's not necessarily the most talented or intelligent individual that ends up in a leadership position," Couzin says. Unqualified animals sometimes rise to power, he says, but most of the time they don't last long.

And animals don't wait for the next election to find a replacement, Couzin says.

Another Tibetan in western China self-immolates

BEIJING A Tibetan farmer set himself ablaze in front of a market in remote northwest China in the second self-immolation death near the Labrang Monastery in two days, a rights group said.

The monastery in Gansu province's Xiahe county is one of the most important outside of Tibet and was the site of numerous protests by monks following deadly ethnic riots in Tibet in 2008 that were the most sustained Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in decades.

The Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet said in an email that Dorje Rinchen, a farmer in his late 50s, set himself on fire Tuesday on the main street in Xiahe and died later.

The group sent a photo allegedly showing Dorje wrapped in blankets after the immolation, his neck and head badly charred and swollen. It was not clear whether he was still alive when the blurry, poorly lit picture was taken.

The group quoted a Tibetan from Xiahe who currently lives in exile as saying that Dorje had counseled young Tibetans not to self-immolate.

A woman who answered the phone at the Xiahe Public Security Bureau refused to answer questions about the self-immolation and the phone of the local Communist Party propaganda office rang unanswered Wednesday. The number for the Labrang Monastery appeared to not be in service.

On Monday, a Tibetan herdsman died after setting himself on fire near the monastery.

Dozens of Tibetans have set themselves on fire since March 2011 in ethnic Tibetan areas of China in protest over what activists say is Beijing's heavy-handed rule in the region. Many have called for the return of their spiritual leader, the exiled Dalai Lama. The government has confirmed some, but not all, of the self-immolations.

Chinese authorities routinely deny Tibetan claims of repression and have accused supporters of the Dalai Lama of encouraging the self-immolations. The Dalai Lama and representatives of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in India say they oppose all violence.

Genetic marker for placebo response identified in IBS patients

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Although placebos have played a critical role in medicine and clinical research for more than 70 years, it has been a mystery why these inactive treatments help to alleviate symptoms in some patients -- and not others. Now researchers have for the first time identified genetic differences between placebo responders and non-responders, providing an important new clue to what has come to be known as "the placebo effect."

Led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), the new findings demonstrate that genetic differences that account for variations in the brain's dopamine levels help to determine the extent of a person's placebo response, a discovery that not only has important implications for patient care, but could also prove to be of significant benefit to researchers in designing and conducting clinical trials to help determine a drug's effectiveness.

The findings appear in the October 23 issue of PLOS ONE.

"There has been increasing evidence that the neurotransmitter dopamine is activated when people anticipate and respond to placebos, " explains the study's first author Kathryn Hall, PhD, a research fellow in the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care and member of the Program in Placebo Studies and Therapeutic Encounter (PiPS) at BIDMC. "With this new research, we may now be able to use a person's genetic makeup to predict whether or not they will respond to a placebo."

The placebo effect occurs when patients show improvement from treatments that contain no active ingredients. For investigators conducting clinical trials of new drugs -- which require that new treatments be tested against a placebo control to determine their efficacy- placebo responses can pose a particularly difficult challenge, requiring investigators to recruit additional patients in order to acquire statistically significant data, and substantially adding to the overall cost of the trial.

Because dopamine is known to be important to both reward and pain, the investigators began their search for a genetic placebo marker in the dopamine pathway. Their focus soon turned to the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene.

"COMT made for an excellent candidate because it's been implicated in the cause and treatment of many conditions, including pain and Parkinson's disease," says Hall. "It's also been found in behavioral genetic models of reward responsiveness and confirmation bias, the tendency to confirm new information based on your beliefs."

Polymorphisms are gene variations, and in the case of the COMT val158met polymorphism, the changes in the COMT gene result in people having either two copies of the methionine (met) allele, two copies of the valine (val) allele, or one copy of each.

"People with two copies of met, the "met/mets," have three to four times more dopamine available in their prefrontal cortex [the brain area associated with cognition, personality expression, decision making and social behavior] than the people with two copies of val," explains Hall. The scientists hypothesized that if dopamine was indeed involved in the placebo response, they would see a difference between how met/met, val/val and met/val genotypes responded to placebo treatments, with the met/met individuals showing a higher response.

To test this hypothesis, the researchers took advantage of a unique opportunity, revisiting a 2008 clinical trial led by PiPS Director Ted Kaptchuk, designed to study the placebo effect in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). "In our original work, IBS patients were assigned to one of three treatment arms and we explored the placebo response in relation to the patient-provider experience and the clinical environment in which the placebo is administered," explains Kaptchuk, Associate Professor of Medicine at HMS and the study's senior author. The treatment conditions included either being "waitlisted' and receiving no treatment, receiving placebo acupuncture in a business-like clinical manner, or receiving placebo acupuncture treatment from a warm supportive health care provider.

Armed with this original data, the scientists genotyped blood samples from patients from the earlier study, using a statistical method known as regression analysis to analyze the effects of a person's genotype and the type of treatment received. "Our regression analysis found that as the copies of met increased, placebo responses increased in a linear fashion, presumably because more dopamine was available," Hall explains. The findings showed that among the IBS patients who had been in the waitlist treatment arm there was no difference in treatment responses between met/met, val/val and met/val genotypes as determined by the IBS-Symptom Severity Scale and Adequate Relief. Among those in the group that received a placebo administered in a businesslike manner, the met/met genotypes showed a small improvement over their val/val and met/val counterparts.

But, says Hall, among the individuals who had received placebo treatment from the warm supportive health care providers, there was a striking difference: the "met/mets" demonstrated a six-fold greater improvement in their IBS symptoms relative to the "val/vals."

"These findings suggest that it is possible that met/met is a genetic marker for the placebo response and val/val is a marker for non-response," says Hall. "In addition, our findings underscore differences in placebo response based on the patient's experience of the clinical environment. In the case of the met/met individuals, you can really see the advantage of a positive doctor-patient relationship. Conversely, our findings suggest that the val/val patients are less influenced by placebo treatment and this sheds light on a clinical challenge faced by many health care providers, whose empathic care helps some people, but makes no difference to others."

Although the researchers note that this is a small study, and that these findings will need to be replicated, they offer an important first step in dealing with the placebo effect when conducting clinical trials, now estimated to cost upwards of $1 billion.

"Currently, most drugs need to demonstrate superior efficacy performance against a placebo before they can receive approval from regulatory agencies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA]," explains Gunther Winkler, PhD, Principal of ASPB Consulting, LLC, and consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. "Being able to predict a genetic predisposition for heightened placebo response could potentially have a major impact in reducing the size, cost and duration of clinical trials. This study's findings are a significant step forward in understanding, predicting and controlling the placebo effect and could help lead to revolutionary changes in the way new medicines are developed in the future."

"This study opens a new avenue of investigation into the biological basis of the placebo response," adds Kaptchuk. "Just as some people find attending church or synagogue to be transforming and others just fall asleep, there are people who are enticed and deeply influenced by the rituals and symbols of medicine, and now we recognize that there may be a genetic explanation for some of this response. Our study is only the first step, and our findings are preliminary, but we hope that as further research unfolds, the implications and expansion of these findings might contribute to improving both clinical care and the efficiency of conducting clinical trials."

In addition to Hall and Kaptchuk, study coauthors include Anthony Lembo, Irving Kirsch, Karin Jensen, Lisa Conboy, John Kelley and Efi Kokkotou, all of the PiPS at BIDMC/HMS; Dmitris Ziogas of the University of Athens; and Jeffrey Douaiher of Johns Hopkins University.

This study was funded by the following grants from the National Institutes of Health: R01 AT004662; 2K24 AT004095; and T32 AT000051. Gunther Winkler is a member of BIDMC's Board of Trustees.
