Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite is the new king of e-readers

2 hrs.

Until now, I was convinced the e-reader was a goner. After all, that black-on-gray "e-ink" display technology has peaked and cheap tablets are eating up what's left of buyer interest. Then I fell in love with Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite. It solves two of e-ink's biggest problems ? lousy contrast and lack of integrated lighting ??while preserving the e-reader's core advantages: readability, affordability and insanely long battery life.

E-ink is opaque ??unlike see-through?LCD ? and because of that, it's a lot harder to light it.?There's no way to "back light" the thing;?you have to light it from the side. When Sony tried to do this in 2008, it destroyed the value of the e-ink screen with oppressive glare, even when the light was off. Nobody bought that product, and Sony doesn't sell a light-up e-reader now. This past April, Barnes & Noble introduced its Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight, and while that reader does a far better job of preserving the e-ink's readability, the lighting looks uneven.

Amazon stayed away from e-ink?lighting tricks until this fall, and the wait has paid off. The technology used to light-up the new Kindle is more advanced than anything I've seen previously: Despite the limitation of an LED array ? in this case, four tiny?lights?buried at the bottom of the screen ? the entire screen glows with near-perfect evenness, no matter how bright or dim you set it.

What surprised me about the Paperwhite wasn't that Amazon finally cracked the lighting problem. It's that the lighting actually solves the other big e-ink?problem: contrast. E-readers have long suffered the criticism that their pictures aren't really black-on-white, but black-on-gray. The reading experience falls short of greatness, no matter how "easy on the eyes" the technology is supposed to be.

By some color-temperature trickery, the Paperwhite's light system turns gray into white. Not only do you leave the light on all the time, but it is ideally kept?at its brightest in all but direct sunlight (where you can't see the lighting). And speaking of direct sunlight, let me assure you that the Paperwhite retains the?outdoor virtue of e-ink?despite the lighting system and the capacitive touch sensor layer.

The other thing e-readers will continue to lord over tablets is battery life. Amazon says the Paperwhite gets up to eight weeks on a single charge, but that's only under certain conditions: that the wireless is turned off, the light intensity is set to 10 (max is 24) and you read just half an hour each day. Odds are, your habits won't align with this perfectly, so you may have to charge it more than every two months. But I will say that since I do most of my leisure reading at night after we turn the lights out, I have had the lighting set near the bottom.?

So, do I have any gripes? Sure. On the technical side, it's a little annoying that there's no ambient light sensor ? you have to mess with the lighting yourself every time you change environments. But it's easy to do it, so that's not a true concern.

In the box you find a USB cable but no charger, nothing you can plug in the wall. Chances are, you already have something like this from a phone, iPad or previous Kindle, but if you need one, it's $10 extra. Alternatively, you can just charge it every so often by plugging it into your computer.

Previous Kindles have had speakers, and advanced functions like MP3 playback and text-to-speech narration ? this Kindle is more streamlined, though it does have the "experimental browser" that we've seen on Kindles from the start.?

A much more serious nuisance is that, for the starting price of $119, you have to put up with ads on the lock screen and at the bottom of the home screen. Even when you pay the $20 bounty to opt out of Amazon's "special offers," you still get a stream of recommended titles on your home screen, and those never go away. (Seriously, Amazon, how is that not an ad?)

Barnes & Noble has retaliated, dropping the price of its ad-free (and incredibly long-named) Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight from $139 to $119. And Barnes & Noble wants to ensure that shoppers know that the Nook does in fact come with a wall charger. If all things were equal, this would be a compelling proposal, but things are not equal. If you don't live inside a Barnes & Noble, the Nook's advantages fall short of the Paperwhite's superior technology.?

If you are a frequent Amazon shopper with a $79-per-year Prime membership, then a Kindle gets you one additional benefit: One free "lending library" book per month, including the Harry Potter series, "Hunger Games" and a ton of other bestsellers.

So if you don't care about ads, then the Paperwhite's $119 starting price is a bargain. Eliminate the ads and buy a charger and you get to about $150, still not bad. If you don't have Wi-Fi, you'll have to get the 3G version, which is $179 with ads, $199 without ? a bit more steep, perhaps, but not a terrible one-time payment, especially for someone who doesn't have home broadband.

Amazon's growing less abashed about trying to get you to spend more money ? and I think there'll be a point where it backfires. But for now, the Paperwhite's virtues outweigh any of the tacky marketing, and it can be declared hands down the best e-reader yet, without any need for qualifiers.

Scent of Danger: Are There Toxic Ingredients in Perfumes and Colognes?

Dear EarthTalk: I?ve always suspected that perfumes and colognes must not be too healthy simply because of the way the smell of most of them bothers me. Am I correct? Is there information available on this issue??Lucinda Barry, Minneapolis

Ahhh...the sweet smell of petrochemicals! The Environmental Working Group (EWG) reports that, while many popular perfumes, colognes and body sprays contain trace amounts of natural essences, they also typically contain a dozen or more potentially hazardous synthetic chemicals, some of which are derived from petroleum. To protect trade secrets, makers are allowed to withhold fragrance ingredients, so consumers can?t rely on labels to know what hazards may lurk inside that new bottle of perfume.

?A rose may be a rose,? reports EWG. ?But that rose-like fragrance in your perfume may be something else entirely, concocted from any number of the fragrance industry?s 3,100 stock chemical ingredients, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer.?

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of over 100 groups seeking transparency about chemicals in cosmetics, commissioned independent laboratory tests that revealed 38 secret chemicals in 17 leading fragrances. The top offenders?: American Eagle Seventy Seven topped the list with 24, followed by Chanel Coco with 18 and Britney Spears Curious and Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio each with 17.

?The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label,? reports EWG, which analyzed the Campaign?s data. ?Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.? EWG adds that some of the undisclosed ingredients are chemicals ?with troubling hazardous properties or with a propensity to accumulate in human tissues.? Examples include diethyl phthalate, a chemical found in 97 percent of Americans and linked to sperm damage in human epidemiological studies, and musk ketone, which concentrates in human fat tissue and breast milk.

EWG explains that ingredients not in a product?s ?hidden fragrance mixture? must be listed on the label, so makers disclose some chemicals but ?lump others together in the generic category of ?fragrance?.?

EWG blames the U.S. government in part, pointing out that the Food and Drug Administration ?has not assessed the safety of the vast majority? of secret chemicals used in spray-on products such as fragrances. ?Fragrance secrecy is legal due to a giant loophole in the Federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1973, which requires companies to list cosmetics ingredients on the product labels but explicitly exempts fragrance,? reports EWG. As such, the cosmetics industry has kept the public in the dark about fragrance ingredients, ?even those that present potential health risks or build up in people?s bodies.?

For more information, check out EWG?s May 2010 ?Not So Sexy? report, available on the group?s website. Also, EWG?s SkinDeep database serves as an evolving source of information on the ingredients (and their health risks) in thousands of cosmetics and related products widely available on store shelves.

Ancient Syrian market set on fire by fighting

Shaam News Network via AP

In this image taken from video obtained from Shaam News Network, which has been authenticated based on its contents and other AP reporting, a fire rages at the medieval market in Aleppo, Syria.

By NBC News and wire services

Hundreds of shops in the ancient covered market in Aleppo, Syria, were burning Saturday as fighting between rebels and state forces in Syria's largest city threatened to destroy the U.N. World Heritage Site.?

Activists speaking via Skype said army snipers were making it difficult to approach the Souk al-Madina, the medieval market of vaulted stone alleyways and carved wooden facades in the Old City, once a major tourist attraction, Reuters reported.

Activists said the fire might have been started by shelling and gunfire, and estimated that between 700 and 1,000 shops had been destroyed so far. The accounts were difficult to verify because of government restrictions on foreign media.

Aleppo's Old City is one of several locations in Syria declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency.

UNESCO believes five of Syria's six World Heritage ?Sites -- which include the ancient desert city of Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers crusader fortress, and parts of old Damascus -- have been affected by the fighting.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian forces and rebels blamed each other for the blaze.

The uprising-turned-civil war has killed more than 30,000 people, according to activist groups.?

Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday announced a new offensive in Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub of 2.5 million people, but neither side has appeared to make significant gains.?

The Syrian conflict grinds on. Cities are under attack leaving them crushed by heavy shelling. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Text messages attributed to the army were sent to all Syrian mobile phones when the offensive was announced.

"To those who have implicated themselves against the state: Those who have offered you money have left you with two options: You will be killed fighting the state or it will kill you to get rid of you," one message read.?"The state is more merciful than you. Think and decide. The Syrian Army."?

Activists also reported heavy clashes at Bab Antakya, a stone gateway to Aleppo's Old City, which sits on ancient trade routes and survived a parade of rulers throughout its construction between the 12th and 17th centuries.?

"No one is actually making gains here, it is just fighting and more fighting, and terrified people are fleeing," said an activist contacted by telephone who declined to be identified.?

He said in some districts bodies were lying in the streets and residents would not collect them, fearing snipers.

By noon on Saturday, more than 40 people had been killed in fighting across Syria, according to the Observatory.

Syria's military deadlock is also reflected diplomatically, with foreign powers stalemated over how to act. Western states and Gulf Arab countries back the opposition but most seem reluctant to interfere, while Russia, China and Iran back Assad.

The revolt, which began in March 2011 as peaceful protests, has become an armed insurgency, with rebels holding ground in Aleppo and rural towns of northern Syria.

The fighting has crept closer to Syria's border zones, and some bullets and rockets have hit neighboring Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. Ankara warned it would take action if its territory was again hit -- a mortar bomb hit a town on its southeastern frontier on Friday.

Activists reported fresh clashes in the capital Damascus and its suburbs and said security forces were torching homes as helicopters buzzed overhead.?

The bloodied bodies of at least 12 men were found in Damascus's northwestern suburb of Qudsaya. A video published by showed rows of men, some of them apparently shot, laid in a room whose walls were spattered with blood.

Some Damascus residents have accused government forces of summary executions in rebel districts.

Reuters contributed to this report.

AP Exclusive: Brown did service at his old daycare

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Chris Brown has logged more than 1,400 hours of community service for the 2009 beating of former girlfriend Rihanna, basically completing his sentence. The Associated Press has learned one-third of those hours were recorded at a rural Virginia daycare center where the singer spent time as a child and his mother once served as director.

And in the last seven months, an AP analysis of the work records indicates Brown's labor credits increased by four times from what they had been during the previous two years. Yet through it all, Brown hasn't stopped being an R&B superstar, performing worldwide, releasing an album and even getting injured in a nightclub brawl.

Brown's service records have come under scrutiny by a prosecutor and a judge, who are trying to ascertain their accuracy. At a Monday hearing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg called the accounting of Brown's community service by Richmond, Va., Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood "somewhat cryptic."

No specific concerns were detailed by the court, yet the AP analysis of Brown's service shows that in the past seven months, the artist has been credited for working 701 hours ? a feat that previously took him 28 months to achieve, clocking sporadic, shorter shifts mostly at Richmond police and fire stations.

In recent months, the logs show Brown has essentially been working three jobs ? performing cleanup duty in Richmond police precincts by day, janitorial chores at the daycare 45 miles east by night, and hit songs for global audiences in between.

Ida Minter, the administrator of the Tappahannock Children's Center, said Brown attended the nonprofit facility "off and on" for more than 12 years and his mother was employed there for 24 years, including as director.

Brown's community service at the center began in January 2010, but work entries dramatically increased in March of this year. Most of his shifts were logged between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. and were typically listed as "general cleaning," with some entries describing him painting or stripping and waxing floors. It is unclear who supervised him.

Brown's attorney Mark Geragos said Monday that he welcomed inquiries from Los Angeles probation officials and said he urged Brown to work double shifts so the lawyer wouldn't have to keep coming back to court.

Minter described Brown's work at the daycare center favorably.

"I think Chris always goes beyond because he always wants to give back to where he grew up," she told the AP. "And this was a part of his home because his mom worked here full-time."

"If you've ever been involved in stripping and waxing, it's hard," she said. "It's a lot of work."

Minter said Brown was always accompanied by someone while working at the center, but she said she couldn't discuss who it was.

The singer, who pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009, only worked at night and on weekends when no children were present, Minter said. That is supported by the logs, which also showed that Brown only worked one other weekend shift that wasn't at the daycare center.

Brown has been undeniably busy in recent months, releasing his new album "Fortune," traveling to France for a video shoot, winning a Grammy Award, performing at other award shows and resuming his friendship and music collaboration with Rihanna.

He has also drawn negative attention for being present at a bottle-throwing brawl at a New York City nightclub that left him with a cut chin. And in February, a woman in Miami accused him of taking her cellphone to prevent her from snapping pictures of him.

It was after that incident that Brown, 23, accelerated his work schedule, completing the 701 hours in seven months, according to the records filed Monday.

Meanwhile, the singer has remained an active promoter of his work on Twitter, where he sends out almost daily links to his music and clothing line, and also interacts with fans.

His international travel, which must be approved by Schnegg, has somehow been squeezed around his marathon community service sessions.

In July, for instance, Brown is listed as working 42 hours in four days before leaving for France. Upon his return, he worked 12 consecutive days, logging 164 hours, 100 of which were at the daycare described in Norwood's log as "Tappa Day Care."

March was similarly busy, with Brown being credited for work on 20 of the month's 30 days; he was approved to travel to Cancun, Mexico, for five of the remaining days.

Before this week, Brown had received praise from Schnegg and had never been in danger of violating his probation. But that could change if the inquiry the judge ordered turns up irregularities with the singer's service.

Schnegg allowed Brown to perform his work in his home state of Virginia under the supervision of Norwood, but on Monday noted there are discrepancies in the chief's accounting.

For one, Brown's work log shows he has put in 1,402 hours, but a couple of errors in the data may push the total up to 1,404. And although Brown was sentenced to perform 1,440 hours of labor, the chief wrote in a letter dated Sept. 14 that Brown had completed all his service hours.

Norwood's spokesman declined to respond to questions from the AP on the discrepancies. "Chief Norwood has reported directly to the judge, providing periodic updates regarding the progress of Chris Brown's community service," spokesman Gene Lepley said.

Prosecutors "are not happy with the quality of the report," Schnegg said Monday. "They don't know if it's reliable, yes or no."

District Attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the office would make all its comments on the case in court.

The judge and prosecution aren't the only ones concerned about the administration of Brown's sentence. In August, Virginia probation authorities recommended that Richmond police stop supervising Brown after the singer tested positive for marijuana and what they believed was unapproved travel to France. However, they made no critical comments about his community service.

Geragos, Brown's attorney, declined comment for this story, but he said at Monday's court hearing that he believes his client has completed all his community service.

Brown's labors have left a lasting mark at the Tappahannock Children's Center: a colorful wall mural featuring a huge clown face and splashes of purple, orange, green and yellow. The words "Big Room" ? the informal name of the large space amid a warren of smaller classrooms ? is painted in fat letters along a wall where jackets are hung on hooks.

Brown approached Minter, who has known Brown since his birth, to ask if he could use his art skills on the walls of the big room, she said.

The singer is not the only celebrity to perform community service with an entity to which they have close ties. Mel Gibson and Sean Penn had similar arrangements.

Both actors had received permission in advance for the assignments in misdemeanor cases. Before Monday's filings, there had been no mention of Brown working at his boyhood daycare center in probation reports.

Russian punk band supporters expect little of legal appeal

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian court's decision to hand two-year jail terms to punk band Pussy Riot for performing an anti-Kremlin song in Moscow's main cathedral prompted fury in the West and refocused attention on President Vladimir Putin's rights record.

But as a judge prepares to rule on Monday on an appeal filed by the three female jailed band members their legal team and their relatives hold out little hope that the sentences - which they believe were overly harsh - will be quashed or reduced.

"Such a decision is impossible," said Mark Feigin, a defense lawyer. "The courts are not independent and to imagine them making a decision based on the law would be a fantasy."

The case has damaged the Russian government's reputation in the West and raised awkward questions about its relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church, while the West's criticism has angered the Kremlin and irked many Russians who view the women as publicity-hungry provocateurs rather than freedom fighters.

The appeal ruling will have serious implications for the trio involved. Stanislav Samutsevich, father of Yekaterina Samutsevich, one of the three, never went for more than a month without seeing his only daughter before she was jailed.

In the seven months since she and the others were detained he has visited her in prison every other week and in court.

But if Monday's appeal fails to overturn the two-year jail sentence handed down to her and her two band mates for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" she will be sent to a distant prison colony and he will only be allowed rare visits.

He now spends his time surfing Internet forums to chat with other convict's relatives about prison conditions.

"When I last saw her on Friday, she complained about the lack of information. She was worried about how to react, about what will happen after the court," he told Reuters. "I was calming her down."

Opposition activists argue that the harsh sentences were personally ordered by Putin as part of a crackdown on dissent following his return to the presidency in May, an event foreshadowed by the biggest protests against the former KGB agent since he was first elected head of state in 2000.

Putin has repeatedly said he did not and will not interfere in the judicial process, though Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said he thinks the trio should be released.

LENIENCY?

Some saw Medvedev's comments as a sign that the trio may receive leniency but political analysts say he has little power to influence the appeal, and other moves suggest the Kremlin is in no mood to allow the women's release.

It has a limited incentive to do so. Although the West has criticized the verdict, opinion polls showed a majority of people in mainly Orthodox Christian Russia opposed the Pussy Riot protest, though fewer wanted tough jail sentences.

Parliament expelled an opposition leader from parliament earlier this month and has pushed through laws raising fines for protesters, stiffening punishment for defamation and tightening controls over foreign-funded lobby groups since May.

Another bill under consideration in parliament, where Putin's United Russia has a majority, would institute jail terms of up to three years for offending religious feelings.

Andrei Isayev, a party deputy from the ruling United Russia party, in his radio program this month called the women's conviction "just and humane" punishment for a performance he likened to "dancing on the graves of believers' relatives."

Samutsevich, 30, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and 24-year-old Maria Alyokhina were sentenced on August 17, six months after criticizing Putin's close ties with the Russian Orthodox Church in a "punk prayer".

The trial exposed Putin to international criticism because of doubts over the independence of the judiciary, and global celebrities including British musician Paul McCartney, a former Beatle, and U.S. pop singer Madonna, called for leniency.

A Church statement after the verdict indicated that the clergy would back a pardon or a reduced sentence, but that would have required the women to admit their guilt. They have not done so.

They say their protest, in brightly-colored balaclavas, tights and short skirts, was not intended to offend believers and was motivated by anger over Putin's growing closeness to Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Kirill has called Putin's rule a "miracle of God" and backed his presidential election campaign this year. Kirill dismissed criticism of his backing for the Kremlin on Friday, telling students that close ties between the church and state helped protect and develop society.

But the debate over whether the three women should have been jailed has deepened a split in society to a degree rarely seen since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

Soon after their trial, a group that took responsibility for the desecration of four wooden crosses that were chopped up in Russia said it was a protest against Pussy Riot's jailing.

A group of ultra-religious opponents of Pussy Riot has started organizing vigilante patrols at night in Moscow because its members fear the state cannot protect church property.

The bill criminalizing insults to religious sentiment could tighten the bonds between Putin and the Orthodox Church.

"The law is being drafted to protect the process of the merging of the church and state," rights activist Valery Borshev said. "It will be selectively applied to those who speak out."

NASA: Remnants of Ancient Streambed Found on Mars

NASA Press Release:

NASA's Curiosity rover found evidence for an ancient, flowing stream on Mars at a few sites, including the rock outcrop pictured here, which the science team has named "Hottah" after Hottah Lake in Canada?s Northwest Territories. It may look like a broken sidewalk, but this geological feature on Mars is actually exposed bedrock made up of smaller fragments cemented together, or what geologists call a sedimentary conglomerate. Scientists theorize that the bedrock was disrupted in the past, giving it the titled angle, most likely via impacts from meteorites.

The key evidence for the ancient stream comes from the size and rounded shape of the gravel in and around the bedrock. Hottah has pieces of gravel embedded in it, called clasts, up to a couple inches (few centimeters) in size and located within a matrix of sand-sized material. Some of the clasts are round in shape, leading the science team to conclude they were transported by a vigorous flow of water. The grains are too large to have been moved by wind.

This image mosaic was taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mastcam telephoto lens on its 39th Martian day, or sol, of the mission (Sept. 14, 2012 PDT/Sept. 15 GMT).

Great Network Marketing Tips You Should Know About | Internet ...

Network marketing is a new and exciting field to some. For some people, it is simply how they pay their bills. With the right choices, network marketing can really pay off.

Restrict all in-person meetings with leads to 45 minutes or less. This helps the lead see that you are a successful business person.

It is important to become thoroughly educated about your product. Passion for your product can pass to your buyers. People will also be more willing to join your downline if they see how passionate you are about your products. If you learn a lot about a niche, you will be able to give truthful testimonials.

You must understand exactly how you will be compensated for your participation in a specific network marketing program. You should opt for a plan that gives you higher returns along with a residual income. Your first few sales will also be referred to your sponsor. This isn?t a bad thing as they?re helpful, and there?s leverage to be had here.

While many people mistakenly focus their efforts on the numbers of leads they get, successful marketers emphasize the importance of quality prospects. In order to earn a profit, you must have dedicated hard-working people in your network that are actively developing their own set of business contacts.

Make sure you have a good business plan that allows you the flexibility to make some mistakes. Create a list of things that need to get done within a certain period of time, then go through that list and see what is actually feasible. The business plan you have created for yourself will help to marry these two together and, hopefully, steer you towards a profitable business.

Learn from pros in your field. If you model your business after those that were successful before you, you will have a better chance because others have already created a path for you.

Keep the length of your meeting to an hour or less. By having a meeting that lasts longer then an hour, it gives the other person the impression that they will have to invest quite a bit of both energy and time into it.

Creating an Internet website is a good idea when it comes to network marketing, but establishing a presence on social networking websites can also be a great way to get started. A dynamic, well-written blog can also fill the bill. Maintaining a social networking presence, as well as your own website, would be very strategic options. The larger your cyber presence, the easier it will be to grow your network. Keep in mind that an active and well designed blog helps too.

If you find something different and new to offer, you might be surprised at how many people are interested in it. People are smart enough to choose what they need, but the choice has to be there to begin with.

If you want to steer Internet traffic towards your marketing sites, then use the concept of video marketing. Video is interesting to people, and you can include all the content you need for a lower cost than might think.

Make social networking part of your affiliate marketing plan. Form different groups to focus interests in certain product niches, and build customer relationships. Start a different social network page for every product that you sell.

A great tip for successful network marketing is to join online forums and participate. These forums are a great source of free advice and exposure. Do a quick search online, and scroll through until you find a forum you like. To find useful tips, read a few posts each day and ask any questions you have.

Staying open minded will really help you when it comes to network marketing. When you keep your mind open, you will be able to do business better.

When participating in network marketing, you should avoid taking any shortcuts because this could potentially cause fatal mistakes. It may seem easier to cut corners, although it will quickly become evident that success in this area is only achieved through hard work and perseverance. If the quality is there then the results will follow.

Whilst network marketing is important for any business, your core aim should always be customer satisfaction. You will surely fail if you don?t attend to your customers needs. Your goal should be to spend approximately 80 percent of the time listening and 20 percent of the time talking.

Spend a lot of time trying to find new customers. Really, when it comes to genuine ways to generate money, this one stands alone. All other activities, such as checking your email, interviewing, or taking opportunity calls, do not make you money. The two methods that net you profits are finding leads and closing leads.

Patience is required at first but you will see result grow exponentially when success does occur. Network marketing isn?t a get rich quick scheme. The first few months or weeks are vital to your business. Network marketing can help a slow start in business, pick up the speed and momentum needed for lasting success.

Using many types of social connections and media can help you market your products and ideas without hitting a snag. There are always going to be new businesses, people and ideas out there on the web trying to get their piece of the pie. The only way to profit and last is to work hard and constantly apply sound business practices like the ones outlined above.

New Groups Make A Conservative Argument On Climate Change

Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Bob Inglis now runs the Energy and Enterprise Initiative.

Energy and Enterprise Initiative

Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Bob Inglis now runs the Energy and Enterprise Initiative.

One topic you don't hear much about from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is climate change. Like so much else, it's become politically divisive, with polls showing Republicans far less likely to believe in it or support policies to address it.

But two new groups aim to work from within, using conservative arguments to win over skeptics.

Former South Carolina Rep. Bob Inglis has already paid a price for being out of step with his party. In 2010, amid a Tea Party surge, the Republican lost his congressional seat, attacked for ? among other things ? accepting climate science.

These days, Inglis heads the Energy and Enterprise Initiative at George Mason University, making a free market case for tackling global warming.

"We think free enterprise has the answer to energy and climate," Inglis said at a recent meeting of students with the Wharton Energy Club at the University of Pennsylvania. "There's an incredible opportunity in energy, if we just get the economics right."

Inglis proposes eliminating government incentives: no more tax breaks for solar panels or electric cars; no more subsidies for oil companies. Then, he says he would impose a carbon tax on fossil fuels.

?

We already pay more, he says, just in hidden ways, like detrimental health impacts from coal-fired power plants or higher insurance costs from extreme weather linked to greenhouse gases. This "market distortion," he says, leaves fossil fuel companies unaccountable.

"I get to privatize my profits and socialize my cost," he says, referring to how fossil fuel companies might view the status quo. "That's a pretty good deal as long as you'll let me get away with it."

Much better, he tells the business students, to pay the true cost at the gas pump or on your electric bill.

"Then, I, as a consumer out of enlightened self-interest, would seek out the company that you're going to found, that's going to supply me with the alternative," Inglis says, speaking to about three dozen students who intend to pursue careers in the energy sector.

Inglis knows any tax is often a turn-off. He'd offset his carbon tax with a payroll tax cut, but is open to other ideas for keeping it revenue neutral.

The business students seem receptive, though doubtful that such a thing would fly with the current GOP.

In fact, energy's become a surprisingly hot topic this campaign season. A slew of TV ads, funded by fossil fuel interests, echo Republican positions, pushing for more domestic production of oil and gas. One ad by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity touts coal as "affordable, abundant, and ours."

Romney's energy plan doesn't mention climate change and relies on boosting the supply of oil, gas and coal. When he announced it last month in Hobbs, N.M., he criticized President Obama's energy regulations, saying they make it seem as if the administration doesn't want people to use fossil fuels.

"That instead, they want to get those things so expensive and so rare," Romney said, "that wind and solar become highly cost effective and efficient."

Inglis chuckles at that.

"Well," he says, "they are in fact cheap by comparison, if you compare the full cost."

Inglis is confident he can win Republican converts. Alex Bozmoski, 27, has already sought him out.

"I took a climate science class in 2005," Bozmoski says, "with the explicit purpose of heckling the professor."

Convinced of a hoax, Bozmoski relentlessly pointed out uncertainties in the science. Until, he says, he realized uncertainty is the essence of risk. And in the case of climate change, this risk carries potential costs for everyone. Bozmoski now works with Inglis to persuade others. And they're not alone.

"I think our group gives them cover like, 'OK, let me go and see what this is all about,' " says Michele Combs, who's with the Christian Coalition, and recently launched Young Conservatives for Energy Reform.

Combs became concerned about climate and energy while pregnant, when her doctor told her not to eat fish because it contained mercury. She later learned that came from coal-fired power plants.

"The more research I did on this issue," she says, "I realized this was really a family issue. It affects everybody; everybody wants clean air. And it was really sad that it was such a partisan issue."

Combs has been organizing educational house parties around the country. Beyond health, they focus on national security and the large number of U.S. troops killed while transporting fuel. One thing she does not mention? The words "global warming."

"You know how when you hear something, and you immediately hear a buzz word, you immediately turn off?" she explains.

Both Combs and Inglis are careful not to sound alarmist. They want to reach those who may not even believe in climate change. Still, Inglis has thought long and hard about what he calls the "populist rejection" of climate science.

"For conservatives," he says, "it's seen as an attack on our lifestyle. You can't live in the suburbs. You gotta give up that big car."

He knows people don't like to be told what to do. But Inglis remembers his dad teaching him to save gas by letting up on the pedal and coasting. He says a party that once valued thrift now touts a philosophy of "burn it up."

"It's not conservative to waste stuff," Inglis says, "and to cause somebody else's kids to go on the sands of the Middle East to fight for that stuff that we're wasting."

At stake, he says, is the most basic of conservative principles: whether we leave our children a place that's pleasant and livable.

Blogging dad blasted for favoring one son over another

A daddy blogger is facing a backlash for publicly acknowledging that he likes his older son more than the younger one.

Buzz Bishop, a Canadian radio host who writes as "Dadcamp" on the website Babble, wrote a Sept. 18 post detailing how he and his now-wife met. She got pregnant within two months after they started dating.

He went on to describe how he divorced his estranged wife and married his girlfriend three years after the birth of their first son, Zacharie.

But then he wrote the line that many have found objectionable. As he continues to reflect upon how much his life has changed since his re-marriage and the birth of his two sons, he writes: "If I were to be absolutely honest, my older son is my favorite of the two. He and I are adventurous partners in crime, and I can't imagine life without him. He was an accident waiting to happen, and I'm so glad it did."

In a follow-up post, Bishop mentions that he has been getting feedback for having acknowledged having a favorite child.

The post, titled "Admit It. You Have a Favorite Kid. I Do," Dadcamp writes Sept. 19: "Yes, I have a favorite son and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'm guessing you could look deep in the mirror and admit you have a favorite too. My choosing Zacharie as my favorite is not about 'playing favorites,' or 'preferential treatment' when I'm parenting. I don't let Zacharie get away with anything because he's my first pick, I just .. y'know .. like him better."

Bishop told " Good Morning America," "For me to take that language and call him my favorite, he's just the one I relate to easier. If that means he's my favorite and that's the language, I don't think that's too evil."

Bishop wrote on his blog that he prefers his older son, 5-year-old Zacharie, to 2-year-old Charlie, because Zacharie "can do more things. To me, he's more fun. I don't love either of my sons any more than the other, but I do like them differently. I'd be willing to bet you're the same."

(Parenting website Babble is owned by the Disney Co., as is ABC News.)

Readers of his blog were quick to register their reaction. Most were overwhelmingly critical of his statements, which he continued to defend to posters in the days after publication of the post.

"You really don't care that your kids could find this one day? I cannot imagine seeing something like this written by my mom or dad. No matter how secure you are in your parents' love as an adult, to read that I wasn't the favorite would be a crushing blow. In fact, reading that I WAS the favorite would be crushing as well because I would feel so awful for my sibling. WHY must you put this on the Internet?" one commenter asked.

Another wrote: "It's very hurtful to say you have a fav. child. I hope when they can both do things which you deem meaningful, you will fav. them both. p.s. I think Dad's who don't fall in love with their kids until they can "do stuff" suck. That's just another way to get out of diaper duty imho."

"Jesus H. dude. Keep it to yourself. Someday your little one will be incredibly hurt by this," a third stated.

Others came to Bishop's defense, however.

"I commend you for being so honest and I can relate," another commenter wrote. "I have 3 children and their ages span from 3-12. I think you will see as they get older and the younger child can 'do more stuff' that your 'favorite' may go back and forth as their personalities develop and they go through phases of wanting to be close and express their independence. It's a shame that people can't just read the blog as written without trying to act so superior and having the 'Oh, I could NEVER' attitude. Kudos to you for being honest and HUMAN."

Yet another added: "Tell these people with their backs up to lighten up!, Everyone likes one child better at any given time, a 5 year old is easier for most men to relate to than a 2 year old simple as that, I don't think you can comment on who "sucks" without knowing circumstances! Years from now those boys will have your blog to look back on and be able to enjoy your take on their growing up years, it will be priceless for them! Hats off to you for telling it like it is!"

New York Child psychologist Jamie Howard says she worries that outward displays of child favoritism could have developmental ramifications for children as they grow.

"Forming relationships with peers and teachers and other adults could be potentially more difficult for kids if they've somehow gotten this notion that they're not as likeable," Howard told "GMA."

Bishop's wife, Jennifer, told the Daily Mail that she understood her husband's post. "I know where he's coming from, and I know he loves them both the same."

Bishop also stands by his post.

"It's something we all have inside and I'm honest when I write so I wrote about that moment, that struggle I have, and told the stories about my kids," he told "GMA."

Water-resistant, LTE-connected Sony Xperia V tipped for December launch

Android Central

As Sony prepares to launch the Xperia T in the UK this week, eyes are already on the T's quirky sibling, the Xperia V. Unveiled alongside the Xperia T at IFA last month, the V boasts water resistance and LTE connectivity, in addition to similar internals to the Sony flagship. The screen's been shrunk down to a 4.3-inch panel, although the resolution remains the same, at 1280x720.

Today a Swedish retailer has given us our first tentative Xperia V release date and price point. Dustin.se is now listing the Xperia V as available for pre-order, with a price tag of SEK 4299 (around $650) and a release date of Dec. 3. That's a long time to wait for Sony fans, who'll have plenty to tempt them in the fourth quarter. We'll be crossing our fingers for an earlier release, as it's not every day you see LTE, a 720p screen and water resistance in a single handset.

Tempted by a high-end waterproof device like this? Shout out in the comments.

Why Personal Bankruptcy Is The Best Choice For Some | Siben ...

TIP! Two to three months following your bankruptcy hearing, get a copy of your credit score from the major reporting agencies. Check to make sure your credit report accurately reflects your recently discharged debts.

Filing for bankruptcy is never a day in the park. If you are contemplating filing for bankruptcy, it means that you are in a dire financial situation. With the solid advice in the article below, you may be able to make a better choice.

TIP! When you speak with a bankruptcy attorney, it is important that you tell him everyone that you owe significant amounts of money too. While this means you have to disclose information about credit card companies, hospitals and lenders, it also means you should tell him about any money that you owe family and friends.

When you realize that you probably will file for bankruptcy, do not pay your creditors or try to avoid bankruptcy by spending all of your regular or retirement savings. You should always keep money saved for worse times. Using your savings is necessary, but decimating it and leaving yourself dangling with no future financial security is not a good idea.

TIP! Try to get a referral from a trusted source before choosing an attorney to handle your bankruptcy and make sure they have no issues with the state bar or the better business bureau. This type of law is a popular attraction for inexperienced newcomers.

Be sure the lawyer that you choose is very experienced in bankruptcy law. There are a lot of lawyers available to help you. Although hiring the least expensive attorney is tempting, make sure that experience trumps price.

TIP! Filing for bankruptcy is an option that can put an end to harassing creditors calling you at your work and home. When your debts become overwhelming, it is easy to let stress take a hold of you.

Stay in the loop during the bankruptcy process rather than just leaving everything to your lawyer. You need to know what?s going on so don?t be afraid to ask them questions. It is entirely possible for mistakes to be made by personnel in busy offices of law. No matter what you hear, lawyers are just as human as you.

TIP! Do not abandon hope. There may still be way to get repossessed items back after you file for bankruptcy.

Once you file for bankruptcy you need to be extremely careful about any debt you incur. Many lenders will offer loans and credit cards, that are supposedly geared towards people who are making a fresh start after bankruptcy. Usually these loans and credit card offers come with high interest rates. If you are not able to control yourself, you will end up back at square one.

TIP! Before filing for bankruptcy, look into which debts it will clear in your situation. Certain debts, including student loans, may remain with you regardless of your bankruptcy filing.

Before declaring bankruptcy, be sure you?ve weighed other options. If your debt is relatively low, you may be able to manage it with credit counseling. It is sometimes possible to negotiate smaller payment by yourself. If you do this, make sure you save a written record of debt modifications that are negotiated.

TIP! Think about all your options before pulling the trigger. Talk with a bankruptcy lawyer and ask about alternatives, such as debt consolidation or negotiating with creditors.

Keep in mind that filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy may affect other people than just you, including family members, and in some cases, business associates. When you file a Chapter 7, your debts will be dissolved. Creditors, however, will hold the co-signer liable for the entire balance of the debt.

TIP! Remember to spend some quality time with your loved ones. The process of bankruptcy can prove particularly brutal.

When deciding to file bankruptcy, do not feel ashamed of your situation. A lot of people feel depressed and as if they have failed when they seek bankruptcy. If you have researched all your options and logically came to the conclusion that this works best for you, view it as making a positive step in reclaiming your finances rather than seeing it as a failure.

TIP! Organize your debts into an easy-to-read list. You need to gather every debt you know you have, because this list is the starting point for a bankruptcy filing.

Before you file make sure that you are not doing anything to bring yourself in debt any more. Avoid taking on more debt right before you file for bankruptcy. Judges as well as creditors will consider you current and past history when they?re adjudicating personal bankruptcy. Let them see how you are making positive changes to your personal financial management by demonstrating what you are doing right now.

TIP! Learn all the latest laws before you file bankruptcy. The laws change a lot, so you need to look them up and have a better idea of how to properly approach the bankruptcy process.

Try your best to keep a good credit record. Only file for personal bankruptcy if there is no other option. Often companies will reach a settlement that is greatly reduced. Other times, they will help you find a repayment plan that you can manage. Not only will you end up saving money, but your credit rating won?t take such a hard knock. Prior to filing, you should consider obtaining a loan for consolidating your debt.

TIP! Know the laws and guidelines about bankruptcy before you formally file. The bankruptcy code contains several provisions that can raise serious obstacles in your case.

Bankruptcy is something you file for after considering all your other options. The tips from this article can now guide you on the right path to avoid bankruptcy. Apply what you?ve learned here to make changes in your life that will not hurt your credit

UK to extradite radical Muslim cleric to US

(AP) ? Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has lost a court appeal to be extradited to the United States to face terrorism charges, including allegedly trying to set up an al-Qaida training camp in rural Oregon, officials said Monday.

The European Court of Human Rights gave its final approval for the cleric's extradition Monday, ending a long-running legal battle. The decision means that al-Masri, considered one of Britain's most notorious extremists, could be deported within weeks.

Al-Masri and four other terrorism suspects in Britain had argued that in the U.S. they could face prison conditions and jail terms that would expose them to "torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" in breach of the European human rights code.

In April, the Strasbourg, France-based human rights court rejected those claims. Al-Masri and the others lodged an appeal to that ruling, but on Monday the court said the appeal had failed.

"Today the Grand Chamber Panel decided to reject the request," the court said in a statement. It did not give a reason for refusing the appeal.

Britain's Home Office welcomed the decision. "We will work to ensure that the individuals are handed over to the U.S. authorities as quickly as possible," it said.

The suspects, who are accused of crimes such as raising funds for terrorists, could face life sentences in a maximum-security prison.

The U.S. accuses Al-Masri, who is blind in one eye and wears a hook for a hand, of assisting the taking of 16 hostages in Yemen in 1998 and of conspiring to set up a terrorist training camp in Bly, Oregon, between 2000 and 2001.

He is also accused of preaching jihad ? holy war ? in Afghanistan.

The cleric, who is known for his fiery anti-Western and anti-Semitic outbursts, claims he has lost his Egyptian nationality, but Britain considers him an Egyptian citizen. He is currently serving a seven-year prison term in Britain for inciting hatred.
