New more-sensitive blood test catches recurring breast cancer a year earlier

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A new blood test is twice as sensitive and can detect breast cancer recurrence a full year earlier than current blood tests, according to a scientist who reported at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in San Diego on March 29.

Daniel Raftery, Ph.D., who reported on the test, pointed out that breast cancer survivors -- 2.5 million in the U.S. alone -- face about a 1-in-5 chance that the cancer will come back, or recur, within 10 years of treatment. Research shows that early detection of these recurrences and treatment can save lives. However, currently available blood tests are not very sensitive. Perhaps the best known test for a biological "marker" protein, or "biomarker," called CA 27.29, misses many cases of recurrence and detects them late -- often after symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or bone pain, surface.

"We have identified a group of nine biomarkers that signal recurrence of breast cancer," Raftery said. "Our markers detect twice as many recurrences as the CA marker does at the same specificity. They also detect cancer recurrence earlier, about 11-12 months sooner than existing tests. They accomplish this with blood samples, rather than biopsies, with less discomfort to patients."

To find these markers, Raftery's team at Purdue University and Matrix-Bio, Inc., a company he founded, analyzed many hundreds of "metabolites" in the blood of breast cancer survivors. Metabolites are small molecules, biological byproducts formed as the body's cells go about the business of life. Some are released into the bloodstream and urine. The rapidly emerging scientific field called "metabolite profiling" seeks to understand how these metabolites relate to health and disease. Groups of metabolites already have been linked to a range of diseases. Many of Raftery's biomarkers were known to be involved in cancer. But no one knew that this group of metabolites could serve as biomarkers for breast cancer recurrence, he said.

The markers are detected with an instrument called a mass spectrometer, which is common in clinical laboratories. Raftery explained that these markers would be used in combination with results from CA 27.29 blood tests.

"We take both of those results together and roll them into the profile so that the score we generate is a combination of the CA value and our nine metabolites," he said. "If the score indicates that the cancer probably has returned, the patient would then likely undergo imaging tests to locate the tumor."

Raftery hopes that the new test will become available later this year. In the meantime, the researchers are conducting another clinical study with the test. He also said that, in the future, the test might be useful in the early detection of breast cancer, not just recurrences.

The scientists acknowledged partial funding from the National Institutes of Health.

When Sharp sold off some of its LCD manufacturing business to Hon Hai Precision we knew the company had fallen on tough times, we just didn't realize how bad things truly were. That joint venture it formed with Sony, well, it's all but over at this point. The two companies have amended their deal with each other and Sony has decided not to inject any more capital into the project. That's not entirely surprising since the relationship was already starting to show signs of strain, but the partnership could crumble at any moment. A study period has been designated, through the end of September, to decide what the future holds for the two regarding the production and purchase of large panel LCDs, but at any time Sony can simply demand that Sharp buy back its shares and leave the venture. KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) ? Before the season started, Geno Auriemma figured his Connecticut Huskies wouldn't be good enough to make it to the Final Four.

A funny thing happened along the way: His starless team jelled and now UConn is back in the national semifinals for a fifth straight season.

Tiffany Hayes scored 22 points and top-seed Connecticut beat Kentucky 80-65 on Tuesday night in the Kingston regional final.

"We like to go to the Final Four every year," Auriemma said. "I think we're also realistic, some years it's going to be easier than others. Expectations are always there, regardless of the probability. This year was less than other years. Makes it more worthwhile. Last year we went as a team led by Maya Moore. This year there isn't any of that. The University of Connecticut is going to the Final Four and I think that's pretty cool once in a while."

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 18 for UConn (33-4), which will play Notre Dame on Sunday in Denver. It will be a rematch of last season's national semifinal game and the fourth time these two teams have met this year. The Irish won the first two meetings and the Huskies took the Big East tournament championship game.

"It's kind of tough playing one team four times in one season, but I think we're up to the challenge," Mosqueda-Lewis said.

Hayes, who was selected most outstanding player of the regional, has been to a Final Four in all four of her seasons. Getting there this time was special to the senior.

"It's even sweeter because this is a team effort, it wasn't one or two people getting us there," she said. "We all had our part in it. Everyone had their way of helping us get there. Glad to be back for the fourth time."

The Huskies matched their own school mark of five straight trips to the national semifinals set from 2000-04. LSU and Stanford have also accomplished the feat.

Unlike their previous four trips to the regional finals, which were quick blowouts, the Huskies had to work hard to pull away from the Wildcats.

UConn led 48-47 early in the second half before turning up its defense. The Huskies used a 21-4 spurt to take command. Hayes, the lone senior on the team, was the catalyst, scoring seven points during the run. She got it started with a lay-in. Then the Huskies started a parade to the free throw line, with whistle after whistle. The Huskies converted 12 free throws during the game-changing run.

While the Huskies were scoring points, their vaunted defense was stymieing the Wildcats. Kentucky torched UConn for 39 points, the most allowed in a first half this season by the Huskies.

The Wildcats found it much tougher to score in the second half. During UConn's burst, Kentucky could only get two field goals over a span of 9 minutes.

Mosqueda-Lewis' 3-pointer with 7:26 left capped UConn's burst and made it 69-52.

Kentucky (28-7) could get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Samarie Walker scored 14 to lead the Wildcats.

It's been a strange season for UConn. Despite running through the early part of its schedule, Auriemma knew it was just a matter of time before the team's shortcomings were exposed. Losses to Baylor and Notre Dame on the road were understandable, but it wasn't until the end of February that UConn really came to a crossroads.

The Huskies lost to St. John's at home on senior night snapping a 99-game home winning streak. Nine days later the Huskies fell to Notre Dame. Those two defeats got the Huskies refocused and they've been unstoppable ever since. The Huskies cruised to the Big East tournament championship and rolled through their first three NCAA tournament games.

Now the Huskies are back in the Final Four for the 13th time in the last 18 years.

The Kentucky women were trying to join their men's team in the Final Four. It would have been the eighth time that a school had both programs in the national semifinals. Connecticut has done it three times including last season. The Huskies are still the only school to win both the men's and women's championship in the same season accomplishing the feat in 2004.

It's the second time in three seasons that the Wildcats had reached the regional finals. They lost to Oklahoma two seasons ago.

"It's hard to get to where we got to tonight and they've been here so many times, it's difficult," Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell said. "We need to stay at it and keep showing up and one day we'll punch through."

Kentucky is headed in the right direction. The Wildcats won their first regular season SEC championship since 1982 and tied the school record for victories in a season.

"We had an incredible season," Walker said. "It's disappointing but we have a really good group coming back and we will be really good again."

Mitchell will have most of his team back for next season. The Wildcats' coach before the year started put the Denver Final Four logo in front of the locker room as motivation for his squad. Now they can look toward next season and making it to New Orleans.

"We'll keep knocking on the door and hopefully one day we'll get to the Final Four," Mitchell said. "Four or five years ago when these kids thought of coming to Kentucky, they weren't thinking about winning an SEC championship. I'm really proud of them, and what they've accomplished."

UConn raced out to a 9-0 lead and looked poised for another to blowout. A quick timeout by Mitchell settled his team down and the Wildcats rallied back to close within 23-21 on two free throws by Bria Goss. A jumper by Stefanie Dolson and 3-pointer by Hayes gave the Huskies a 28-21 advantage with 8:19 left.

Kentucky was unfazed. The Wildcats, who were constantly subbing fresh players in, then went on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes as fouls started piling up on the Huskies. A layup by Goss and two free throws by Keyla Snowden gave the Wildcats a 33-30 advantage with 5:01 left.

The teams exchanged baskets and free throws the rest of the half. The two schools combined to take 27 foul shots in the first half with the Wildcats making all 14 of their attempts.

A'dia Mathies' two free throws with 2.1 seconds left tied the game at 39 before Kelly Faris caught the ensuing inbounds pass at halfcourt and beat the halftime buzzer for a lay-in to make it 41-39 at the break.

Retail Business & Technology Expo, New Spring Leaves ...

Last week I attended the Retail Business and Technology Expo in London. It?s the second year of the show. Their strategy to drive traffic appears to be paying off ? registered attendees were reportedly up significantly.? Floor space was at a premium (vendors that typically buy whole pads at NRF in January had almost miniscule booths by comparison ? in a capacity venue).

There was one particular thing that caught my attention and inspired me to make the long haul from Denver to London for a two-day conference. It was the combination of ?business? and ?technology? in the conference?s title. In an age when technology increasingly lies at the heart of almost everything that retailers want to accomplish in engaging consumers, it was refreshing to see a conference focus on bringing the two together.

So what did I learn from this event? One, it pulls a lot of Americans, much like NRF?s big show manages to pull a lot of Europeans. I saw a lot of familiar faces at the event ? established US players alongside companies looking to break out into the European market by establishing a toe-hold at the London show.

But it also drove home to me that ?omni-channel? as a term is here to stay. It was whole-heartedly embraced by attendees and speakers alike, with a fairly common definition: the stuff that comes after you realize that just enabling simple, one-off process that help customers cross channels isn?t enough. And the retailers who spoke at the conference graciously shared their experiences as they struggle with building cross-channel processes.

In very general terms, European retailers seem to have more challenges than American retailers, in part because they have a more established version of a channel that is very immature in the US ? home delivery. Home delivery is not a universal capability, by any means, but it does serve as more of a consideration for omni-channel in European cities than it does in most US cities, outside of New York, and maybe Boston and Chicago. It doesn?t mean that European retailers have bigger challenges, or even significantly different challenges, when it comes to enabling cross-channel shopping behavior, but it does mean their challenges are maybe slightly more complex because they have more touchpoints for consumers.

However, one thing that also came across loud and clear was that customer centricity remains at the heart of cross-channel. All of these efforts that retailers are struggling to align to a cross-channel reality come at the insistence of shoppers, who persist in crashing across channels with no regard to retailers? constraints in supporting cross-channel behavior. So whether it is a grudging, after-the-fact acknowledgement of the customer as central to the business, or an enthusiastic embrace of same, retailers ranging from McDonald?s to Tommy Hilfiger demonstrated at the conference that customer centricity is key to unlocking omni-channel value ? when you place customer considerations seriously at the heart of your strategy, you can create truly innovative solutions to customer problems that you maybe didn?t even know existed. And that is a straight path to differentiation ? and long-term customer value.

Not just for the birds: Human-made noise has ripple effects on plants, too

ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2012) ? A growing body of research shows that birds and other animals change their behavior in response to humanmade noise, such as the din of traffic or the hum of machinery. But human clamor doesn't just affect animals. Because many animals also pollinate plants or eat or disperse their seeds, human noise can have ripple effects on plants too, finds a new study.

In cases where noise has ripple effects on long-lived plants like trees, the consequences could last for decades, even after the source of the noise goes away, says lead author Clinton Francis of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina.

The study appears in the March 21 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

In previous studies, Francis and colleagues found that some animals increase in numbers near noisy sites, while others decline. But could animals' different responses to humanmade noise have indirect effects on plants, too?

Because they can't move, many plants rely on birds and other animals to deliver pollen from one flower to the next, or to disperse their seeds.

To find out what animal responses to noise might mean for plants, the researchers conducted a series of experiments from 2007 to 2010 in the Bureau of Land Management's Rattlesnake Canyon Wildlife Area in northwestern New Mexico.

The region is home to thousands of natural gas wells, many of which are coupled with noisy compressors for extracting the gas and transporting it through pipelines. The compressors roar and rumble day and night, every day of the year.

The advantage of working in natural gas sites is they allow scientists to study noise and its effects on wildlife without many of the confounding factors often associated with noisy areas like roadways or cities, such as pollution from artificial light and chemicals or collisions with cars.

To find out what animal responses to humanmade noise might mean for plants, first the researchers did an experiment using patches of artificial plants designed to mimic a common red wildflower in the area called scarlet gilia.

Each patch consisted of five artificial plants with three "flowers" each -- microcentrifuge tubes wrapped in red electrical tape -- which were filled with a fixed amount of sugar water for nectar. To help in estimating pollen transfer within and between the patches, the researchers also dusted the flowers of one plant per patch with artificial pollen, using a different color for each patch.

Din levels at noisy patches were similar to a highway heard from 500 meters away, Francis explained. When the researchers compared the number of pollinator visits at noisy and quiet sites, they found that one bird species in particular -- the black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) -- made five times more visits to noisy sites than quiet ones.

"Black-chinned hummingbirds may prefer noisy sites because another bird species that preys on their nestlings, the western scrub jay, tends to avoid those areas," Francis said.

Pollen transfer was also more common in the noisy sites. If more hummingbird visits and greater pollen transfer translate to higher seed production for the plants, the results suggest that "hummingbird-pollinated plants such as scarlet gilia may indirectly benefit from noise," Francis explained.

Another set of experiments revealed that noise may indirectly benefit some plants, but is bad news for others.

In a second series of experiments at the same study site, the researchers set out to find out what noise might mean for tree seeds and seedlings, using one of the dominant trees in the area -- the pi?on pine (Pinus edulis).

Pi?on pine seeds that aren't plucked from their cones fall to the ground and are eaten by birds and other animals. To find out if noise affected the number of pi?on pine seeds that animals ate, the researchers scattered pi?on pine seeds underneath 120 pi?on pine trees in noisy and quiet sites, using a motion-triggered camera to figure out what animals took the seeds.

After three days, a number of animals were spotted feeding on the seeds, including mice, chipmunks, squirrels, birds and rabbits. But two animals in particular differed between quiet and noisy sites -- mice, which preferred noisy sites, and western scrub jays, which avoided them altogether.

Pi?on pine seeds that are eaten by mice don't survive the passage through the animal's gut, Francis explained, so the boost in mouse populations near noisy sites could be bad news for pine seedlings in those areas.

In contrast, a single western scrub jay may take hundreds to thousands of seeds, only to hide them in the soil to eat later in the year. The seeds they fail to relocate will eventually germinate, so the preference of western scrub jays for quiet areas means that pi?on pines in those areas are likely to benefit.

In keeping with their seed results, the researchers counted the number of pi?on pine seedlings and found that they were four times as abundant in quiet sites compared with noisy ones.

It may take decades for a pi?on pine to grow from a seedling into a full-grown tree, Francis said. This means the consequences of noise may last longer than we thought. "Fewer seedlings in noisy areas might eventually mean fewer mature trees, but because pi?on pines are so slow-growing the shift could have gone undetected for years, he explained.

"Fewer pi?on pine trees would mean less critical habitat for the hundreds of species that depend on them for survival," he added.

Other authors of the study include Catherine Ortega, most recently of Fort Lewis College, and Alexander Cruz and Nathan Kleist of the University of Colorado, Boulder.
