Activists: 9 Syrian judges defect

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Syrian activists say nine state judges and prosecutors have defected to the opposition.

The Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights says the latest defectors from the regime of President Bashar Assad come from the northern city of Adlib.

In video statement, posted online Sunday, the nine judges identify themselves by name as one of them reads a joint statement and urges others to break ranks with Assad.

Many government officials and army officers have abandoned the regime to join the opposition since the uprising started in March 2011.

Ex-Prime Minister Riad Hijab is the most senior Syrian official to defect so far.

Syria's opposition is dominated by members of the country's Sunni minority. Assad's regime is predominantly Alawite, an offshoot group of Shiite Islam.

Ex-PM Hatoyama, who led Democrats to power, to retire

TOKYO (Reuters) - Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, 65, who led his Democratic Party to a historic election win three years ago, will retire from politics and not contest the December 16 election, after refusing to sign off on the party's campaign platform.

Japan's opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is tipped to finish first in the parliamentary election, well ahead of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) led by current Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

Critics blamed the often indecisive Hatoyama for wasting Democratic Party political capital during his time in office. Three years and three prime ministers later, opinion polls show disappointed voters are likely to give the LDP the biggest number of seats in parliament's lower house.

"Please work hard to prevent a return to old-style politics and move forward with what we tried to accomplish with the change of government," Kyodo news agency quoted Hatoyama as telling Noda on Wednesday, when he informed the prime minister he was retiring because he could not back the party's platform.

Despite pledging to resign his seat in parliament when he quit the top post in 2010, Hatoyama stayed on, plaguing his two successors with public criticism, including over what became Noda's signature policy of doubling the sales tax to 10 percent by 2015 to curb the nation's huge public debt.

Hatoyama and others inside the party and out said the tax hike violated the Democrats' 2009 platform, and charged that the party had abandoned the battle against vested interests that won voters' backing.

"To the same extent that the people were wildly enthusiastic, they are now disappointed. The reason is that the party has switched from fighting vested interests to standing on the side of those vested interests," Hatoyama told Reuters in an interview in August.

Noda is insisting that candidates for the December election sign a document pledging to support the party's policies to try to avoid the feuds over policy that split the party in the past and led to dozens of defections.

Hatoyama, the scion of a wealthy political family dubbed a "space alien" for his sometimes otherworldly views, quit as premier in 2010 after less than a year in office. His support ratings plunged after he raised, then dashed, local hopes that a U.S. Marine airbase could be moved off Okinawa island, unhappy host to about half the 49,000 U.S. forces in Japan.

What's This? Oh, it's Just Another Award. | Read Tom Lucas

Hey there ? Tina?s Mommy Time was kind enough to think of me and threw me a Liebster award! Thanks Tina!

The award is for blogs with less than 200 followers, and although I have more than that, the tight group of bloggers that has had my back this past year falls under the limit, so I am going to go ahead and accept this sucker. Ha!

There?s four steps to this monster:
1. List 11 things about yourself.
2. Answer the nominator?s 11 questions.
3. Choose up to 11 nominees with less than 200 followers and ask them your own questions.
4. Inform them of the awesomeness.

Ok, here?s 11 things about me.
1. Becoming a teacher was the best choice I have ever made. I have had the privilege of getting to know so many great kids and have had the opportunity to share what I have learned about life so far. For those of who have known me a long time, we could say if that I had been famous, this would be the last 20 minutes of my True Hollywood Story.
2. I have a book about to come out: Leather to the Corinthians. Of course, if you are reading this blog, you already know that. It?s all I have been talking about. Moving on.
3. I have a great cat who I secretly think only loves me for the tuna cans she gets to lick clean whenever I make my lunch.
4. Sometimes I firmly believe that the forces of the universe conspire to annoy me.
5. I have been on the local news twice. The first time I pretended to be a professional video game player that had won over $50k in tournaments. The reporter never fact-checked a single thing that I said and it ran the very same night. The second time I was on, I was interviewed buying pazckis in Detroit the day before Fat Tuesday. It must have been a slow news day.
6. During tough times I have turned to various cooking jobs to pay the bills. It turns out that I am a lighting-fast breakfast cook. I seriously rock the house. Problem is that I absolutely hate line cooking. Yet another aspect of my life that could be considered ironic.
7. I fell off a roof once. It was about a 60? drop. I fractured my hip in three places. I laid there for a day and a half until someone found me. When I die, God is going to rewind that part of the tape several times ? just for giggles.
8. For some strange reason, during key points in my life, I have heard Bon Jovi songs playing on the radio. Of all the musicians I thought might provide the soundtrack to my life, Bon Jovi ain?t one of ?em.
9. Sometimes, I am too easily impressed by people.
10. I don?t use a stunt double. So far, I have almost drowned twice, flipped over in a car accident, had a gun go off in my face, was bitten by a poisonous spider, fell of a roof, and survived a tornado. That?s 7 out of 9 lives.
11.The first record I ever bought (it was a 45) with my own money was The Clash?s ?Rock the Casbah.? The second 45 was Toto?s ?Rosanna.? For a second there I sounded really cool, right? Then it all fell apart.

Now the nominator?s questions:

Baseball or Football?

Hockey. Crap, that?s not an option. I will cast an honorary vote for Baseball, as it was my father?s passion. You can actually read about that here: Lessons From my Father.

When you?re writing, do you prefer to sit down with a drink or food?

Coffee. Always and forever. Nature?s energy drink. Food is a rare visitor when I am writing. I tend to forget to eat when I am really into it.

Do you write out your blog post before typing it up?

Sometimes, depends on how much work needs to be put into it. Interestingly enough, the less work I put into it, the more people seem to like it. What a pisser.

How old is your oldest living relative?

87. That?s all you get.

Last show you watched on TV?

Sons of Anarchy. One of those shows I have meant to get to, finally did. Been watching the episodes in bunches. Great show.

Favorite cologne or perfume?

Whatever the wife is wearing, naturally.

What was the make/model of your first car?

78 Ford LTD. Two door DETROIT beast.? Bought it for $370. True story.

Alan Tudyk as Tom Lucas. But would he truly commit to the role?

Who does your family say you most look like?

I dunno about family but I have been hearing? Alan Tudyk a lot lately. I think I will cast him in the movie of my life, but he will have to shave the dome.

Favorite website (not a blog)?

Io9 ? best damn Sci-fi geekdomery available.

What?s the best part of the holidays?

The food. I like to eat. Some days, it?s all I?ve got.

What made you start blogging?

I just wanted to put it out there. My blog is not nearly as focused as many. I?ve tried many different types of posts. It?s interesting which ones people like, and even more so, which ones they don?t. Most of the blogs who follow me have way more traffic and a lot more followers. There are days where I would like a lot more followers, but I don?t have any plans to start writing posts just to generate traffic.

If there is one thing I can promise, is that I will stay true. With my book coming out, I have been blogging mostly about that. I am pretty much ready to get back to poetry, rants, and short fiction posts to be honest.

Here?s my nominees!

I have no clue if they have less than 200 followers. My guess is that they all have many more than that because they all rock. I?m going to pick some amazing blogs, mainly because I like them and I want to see their responses :P .

Here we go:

Only Fragments
EternalDomnation
SciFi Jubilee
An Empty Space
Life Revelation
Wonderings
Jensinewall

and?Poetry Weekly

Ok now here?s my 11 ?questions?:

1. If you were a cereal box mascot, which one would you be?
2. What?s the worst thing you did when you were a kid?
3. You have 24 hours to live. Now what?
4. Your house is haunted by the ghost of a dead celebrity. Tell us about it.
5. Tell me a fantastic lie.
6. You?re a cannibal (just go with it). What?s your favorite recipe?
7. I just pushed you to the ground and took your lunch money. What are you going to do about it?
8. Have you ever spent the night in jail? Any regrets?
9. You can tune a piano, but you can?t tune a fish. Discuss.
10. What?s the oldest can or package in your pantry? Why haven?t you eaten it already?
11. Racecars and old magazines. Chewing gum and a ball of twine. Bananas and Heavy metal. Which do you choose and why?

Ok, that?s enough ? visit all of these blogs and stay awhile.

Startup Diary: Lisa Benson: From Actress to Social Media Guru | The ...

I'm 36 and never had a "real job" as such. I'm an actress and creative type?so I've always flitted between jobs when there has been little or no acting work (which has been often). My perception of a proper job is one where you?sit at a desk for 8, 9, 10 hours a day clock watching, being told what to do?whilst exchanging time for money! I've taken up lots of temp jobs over the?years just to make ends meet, one of which was for a PR company where i made?tea/coffee, photocopied documents and generally helped out around the office.

I did this on and off for 7 years and then questioned myself and asked where?was it leading? There was a realisation that something had to change. The?acting jobs were few and far between and I knew that I was responsible for?the change that I wanted to see. I was getting bored of hearing ?When are?you going to get a ?proper? job?? But what would I do?

I?d noticed?from my time in the PR office that the way people were communicating was?starting to change, everything was moving online, we sent out fewer press?releases by post and talked less on the phone in favour of emailing and?transferring files online. Then came the introduction of Facebook, Twitter,?Linkedin and lots of other social media channels. It was scary times and?unless they embraced this new form of communication the PR office would get?left behind.

Being a bit of a Luddite and more comfortable learning a script I nervously?decided to take the plunge into the world of online communication to see what?is was all about.

Was it just a fad, a passing phase? Outside of the temp?jobs I attended courses on ?How to Tweet? and ?Is it important to be??liked? on Facebook?? etc. I even did a course on blogging and even?though it was daunting I was beginning to understand the impact these tools?could have on a business. I?ve never dreamt of having my own business as?I?ve always been a free spirit and didn?t want to be tied or committed to?anything, however seeing how people were communicating in this ?new and?social? way really excited me and i wanted to shout about it so everyone?could get involved too.

So, I bought a MAC! It was shiny, new and could do lots of wonderful things,?which were totally lost on me! Thankfully I had very patient friends who were?willing to teach this Luddite a thing or two!

After lots of help, patience from friends, online courses and a great?learning curve I decided to set up my own company this year called Digital?Surgeon, it exists to help get businesses and people online who are as?fearful of embracing change as I was.

I now have a small team that work with?me to create social media profiles for small businesses so they can shout?about what they do and tell the world how great their businesses are.

I still do bits of acting when the opportunity arises but having my own?business online has really helped me embrace technology and it's great to be?able to provide people with the tools and opportunity to shout about their?own business too!

I've attached a link to my website (which I've built myself!!!) it's taken me?years but I got there in the end! For any of you ladies out there sitting on?the wire thinking about taking the plunge...do it! www.digitalsurgeon.co.uk

Based in London, Lisa Benson started her career?as an actress?touring with theatre companies, performing in documentaries, commercials, films and music videos. Whilst becoming disillusioned with the temp jobs in-between acting jobs and waiting for the phone to ring?Lisa decided to create her own business?Digital Surgeon.?Lisa's team of web developers, designers and online marketing experts?teach, empower and support small to medium sized businesses (or SMEs) to leverage social media. For more information about Lisa, see her profile.?

Israeli soldiers work on a tank at a staging area near the Israel Gaza Strip Border, southern Israel, Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012. On Tuesday, grieving Gazans were burying militants and civilians killed in ongoing Israeli airstrikes, and barrages of rockets from Gaza sent terrified Israelis scurrying to take cover. Efforts to end a week-old convulsion of Israeli-Palestinian violence drew in the world's top diplomats Tuesday, with U.S. President Barack Obama dispatching his secretary of state to the region on an emergency mission and the U.N. chief appealing from Cairo for an immediate cease-fire. A plume of smoke is seen over central Gaza Strip, after an airstrike by Israeli forces, as seen from the Israel Gaza border, Monday, Nov. 19, 2012. Israeli aircraft struck crowded areas in the Gaza Strip and killed a senior militant with a missile strike on a media center Monday, driving up the Palestinian death toll to 96, as Israel broadened its targets in the 6-day-old offensive meant to quell Hamas rocket fire on Israel. (AP) ? Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi says Israel's "aggression" against Gaza will end Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday in the Nile Delta city of Zagazig, Morsi did not provide any evidence to support his prediction that an end to Israel's weeklong offensive against Gaza is imminent. He only said negotiations between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers will yield "positive results" during the coming hours without elaborating.

His prediction in comments carried on Egypt's official MENA news agency comes as international diplomatic efforts to end the fighting picked up pace with the scheduled arrival in the region later Tuesday of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It's time for The Women's Group--Leave your problems at the door ...

As TYO interns, we not only work with the children of Nablus we also work with their mothers. In the mornings we teach for The Women?s Group, supplementing their seminars with classes that help improve their English, teach them how to use a computer, or give them a space to for a healthier lifestyle with fitness. In striving for the rights of women in places like Palestine, encouraging entrepreneurship among women is one focus. TYO tries to make an impact in this area through programs like WISE?(Women?s Incubation Services for Entrepreneurs). However, there are many women that are not budding entrepreneurs that can also benefit from empowerment programming, and that?s where The Women?s Group comes in.

Women play bingo in Intern Mary?s Beginning English class

In a recent article about women entrepreneurship in the West Bank, issues such as lack of mobility and lack of access to jobs were raised as obstacles that go beyond the usual cultural explanations. Such issues impact the women we see at The Women?s Group just as they impact women entrepreneurs and Palestinian job seekers in general. Many of the women that come to TYO in the mornings see it as a time to leave their neighborhood and do something to better themselves while having fun. Lack of mobility in the West Bank means that it?s not just hard for people to commute to a job or expand the market for their product, it is also hard to visit family in the next city over or spend a weekend away from home. TYO provides a safe space for these women to explore their identities as individuals.

If asked to describe what impact The Women?s Group has, we would describe the excitement we see in the women while they learn hip-hop dance in aerobics class or their increasing confidence in English conversation or their pride in the PowerPoint slideshow they made during IT. Having the space to be themselves and leave their problems at the door is at least as important as any of the hard skills they may be developing.

How have you progressed since the third grade? | All Things Cranes

?What I did on my summer vacation.?

Every one of you have given a speech, or written a paragraph or essay about what you did on your summer vacation while you were in grade school.

You wrote about the lake, the mountains, or the week at the beach. Or you gave a speech and your opening line was, ?What I did on my summer vacation.? And you held your own hands and nervously performed in front of your peers.

You were worried about what they would think and you were nervous about performing in front of your classmates, but somehow you muddled through it.

Your essay was returned with all kinds of red marks for punctuation, grammar, and misspellings.

For those of you who are pack rats, or have parents who are pack rats, you may still have the document.

PERSONAL NOTE: I have many of my daughters? early writings. All gems.

I?m giving you this reminder, this bit of nostalgic instant memory, so I can issue you the following challenges: How have you progressed since then?

How much better are your writing skills? How much better are your presentation skills? And how important are those skills to your sales success, your business success, your social media success, and your career success?

I?ve been a professional writer and professional speaker for 20 years. But like you, I?ve been an amateur since the third grade when I talked about what I did on my summer vacation, and in the fourth grade when I wrote about Hurricane Hazel, which rocked Atlantic City where my family was living at the time. (If you Google it, you can figure out how old I am!)

What most people don?t understand is their initial training forms the foundation of their present skills. Your grammar, your ability to spell, your self-confidence to be able to speak, and your overall character are formulated by your ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Every one of you reading this is now thinking, maybe I should have paid more attention when my high school English teacher was drilling the difference of there, their, and they?re or the difference of your and you?re.

Think about the emails you receive with the subject line that says: ?Your in Luck!?

The person who wrote it is immediately perceived as an idiot and the email is discarded as both disingenuous and poorly prepared.

Maybe I?m prejudiced, but I don?t want to do business with someone who can?t correct his or her own work in the simplest subject line of an email.

The reason I?m harping on speaking and writing is because they are the foundation of the two most important elements of your success: image and reputation.

Everyone wants to have a great image.

Everyone wants to have a great reputation.

GOOD NEWS IS: You can influence both your image and your reputation with your CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE.

I?ll ask my audiences, ?How many of you would be nervous speaking in front of a group of 300 people?? Almost everyone raises his or her hand. The real answer is, they are not nervous, they are not uncomfortable ? those are symptoms. The real issue is they are UNPREPARED. They lack the experience, the subject matter expertise, or suffer from limited self-image or low self-esteem ? or perhaps all four.

This is further complicated by the fact that most of you reading this know what show is on television on Wednesday night at 9 o?clock, and you?re glued to the set to see witness the next episode of ?other people?s drama.? You make a conscience choice to watch something rather than to learn something or do something.

Perhaps if you took a Dale Carnegie course on public speaking, or join a Toastmasters group, you would be able to become a confident presenter.

Perhaps if you started your own blog, and at the age of 30 or 40, you write about what you did on your summer vacation, you might be able to attract people with similar likes and values as they search the internet, same as you.

Please do not confuse this column as a call to action. Rather it is a call to reality.

REALITY: Your writing skills and your speaking skills need to be at a higher level of competence if you are looking to elevate your income to a higher level.

REALITY: Your reputation is the sum total of your words and deeds ? a large portion of which can come from writing and speaking.

REALITY: Your customer is more likely to buy your message if they buy into your passion.

REALITY: You can gain an amazing business social media presence if you combine your ability to write and your ability to convey a value message to your customers.

Gateway Southland: Children in need get extra help... | Stuff.co.nz

Child Youth and Family Southland has welcomed a new initiative to ensure children in its care have access to much-needed education and health services.

Gateway Assessments, which was recently introduced in Southland, is an inter-agency programme between CYF, health and education officials, which involves pulling together all the child's social, health and education information.

The social worker, family, medical professionals and education providers then use the information to agree on a plan for the child's needs.

Child Youth and Family Otago/Southland operations manager Judy Larking said it was a fantastic partnership and initiative.

"It's a really wonderful service that is there to help our most vulnerable children."

All children came from different background circumstances and often health and learning concerns went undetected.

Southern District Health Board nursing director for children's and public health Jane Wilson said Gateway Assessments would ensure young people had access to the treatment and support they needed.

"With Gateway Assessments we can build a complete picture of a child or young person's health and educational needs and work on a plan to meet those needs."

Southland was the 17th district health board to implement Gateway Assessments, which was announced in the 2011 budget. The Government announced a $43 million funding package to improve services for children in care.

This included funding for Gateway Assessments, the expansion of mental health services, early childhood education and specialised parenting support.

Government estimates show if every child entering care had a Gateway Assessment it would mean about 2200 each year could be referred to the right services.

Wii U: New console launches in a sea of gadgets - seattlepi.com

NEW YORK (AP) ? In the six years since the last major video game system launched, Apple unveiled the iPhone and the iPad, "Angry Birds" invaded smartphones and Facebook reached a billion users. In the process, scores of video game consoles were left to languish in living rooms alongside dusty VCRs and disc players.

On Sunday, Nintendo Co. is launching the Wii U, a game machine designed to appeal both to the original Wii's casual audience and the hardcore gamers who skip work to be among the first to play the latest "Call of Duty" release. Just like the Wii U's predecessor, the Wii, which has sold nearly 100 million units worldwide since 2006, the new console's intended audience "truly is 5 to 95," says Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, the Japanese company's U.S. arm.

But the Wii U arrives in a new world. Video game console sales have been falling, largely because it's been so long since a new system has launched. Most people who wanted an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or a Wii already have one. Another reason: People in the broad 5-to-95 age range have shifted their attention to games on Facebook, tablet computers and mobile phones.

U.S. video game sales last month, including hardware, software and accessories, totaled $755.5 million, according to the research firm NPD Group. In October 2007, the figure stood at $1.1 billion.

The Wii U is likely to do well during the holiday shopping season, analysts believe ?so well that shoppers may see shortages. But the surge could peter out in 2013. The Wii U is not expected to be the juggernaut that the Wii was in its heyday, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. The Wii outsold its competitors, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, in its first four years on sale, logging some 79 million units by the end of 2010. By comparison, IHS expects the Wii U to sell 56.7 million in its first four years.

In the age of a million gadgets and lean wallets, the storied game company faces a new challenge: convincing people that they need a new video game system rather than, say, a new iPad.

The Wii U, which starts at $300, isn't lacking in appeal. It allows for "asymmetrical game play," meaning two people playing the same game can have entirely different experiences depending on whether they use a new tablet-like controller called the GamePad or the traditional Wii remote. The GamePad can also be used to play games without using a TV set, as you would on a regular tablet. And it serves as a fancy remote controller to navigate a TV-watching feature called TVii, which will be available in December.

Nintendo, known for iconic game characters such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda, is expected to sell the consoles quickly in the weeks leading up to the holidays. After all, it's been six long years and sons, daughters, brothers and sisters are demanding presents. GameStop Corp., the world's No. 1 video game retailer, said last week that advance orders sold out and it has nearly 500,000 people on its Wii U waitlist.

Even so, it's a "very, very crowded space in consumer electronics" this holiday season, notes Ben Bajarin, a principal analyst at Creative Strategies who covers gaming.

Apple's duo of iPads, the full-size model and a smaller version called the Mini, will be competing for shoppers' attention. Not to be outdone, Amazon.com Inc. has launched a trove of Kindle tablets and e-readers in time for the holidays. These range from the Paperwhite, a touch-screen e-reader, to the Kindle Fire HD, which features a color screen and can work with a cellular data plan. Then there are the new laptops and cheaper, thinner "ultrabooks" featuring Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system ?not to mention smartphones from Apple Inc., Samsung and other manufacturers.

"Nintendo has to be a cut above the noise here," Bajarin says.

The Wii U is the first major game console to launch in years, but in some ways Nintendo is merely catching up with the HD trend. Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. began selling their own powerful, high-definition consoles six and seven years ago, respectively. Both Sony and Microsoft are expected to unveil new game consoles in 2013.

Baird analyst Colin Sebastian thinks the question is not how well the Wii U will do during the holidays, but how it will fare three and six months later.

Gaming has changed significantly in the past six years, especially when it comes to the type of mass-audience experiences that serve as Nintendo's bread and butter. Zynga Inc., the online game company behind Facebook games such as "FarmVille" and "Texas HoldEm Poker," was founded in 2007. The first "Angry Birds" game, that addictive, quirky distraction that has players flinging cartoon birds at structures hiding smug green pigs launched in late 2009. The first iPad, of course, came out in 2010 ?three years after the first iPhone.

Fils-Aime acknowledges that Nintendo competes in the broad entertainment landscape, "minute-by-minute," for consumers' time.

"That's true today and that was true 20 years ago," he says, adding that Nintendo's challenge is communicating to people "what is so fun and appealing about the new system."

Analysts expect Wii U sales to be brisk over the holidays. Nintendo's loyal ?some would say, fanatical? fan base has been placing advance orders and will likely keep the systems flying off store shelves well into next year. The classic Mario and Zelda games are a huge part of the appeal, since they can't be played on any gaming system but Nintendo's.

Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates that by the end of the year, people will have snapped up 3.5 million Wii U consoles worldwide, compared with 3.1 million Wii units in the same period through the end of 2006.

After the Wii went on sale, shortages persisted for months. Stores were met with long lines of shoppers trying to get their hands on a Wii as late as July 2007, more than seven months after the system's launch.

Though supply constraints are expected this time around, Fils-Aime says Nintendo will have more hardware available in the Americas than it had for the Wii's initial months on the market. The company says it will also replenish retailers more frequently than it did six years ago.

An initial sell-out doesn't mean the Wii U will be successful over the long term, IHS notes, citing its estimate that the Wii U won't match the Wii's sales over time.

Bajarin believes it's going to take "a little bit of time" for the Wii U's dual-screen gaming concept to sink in with people. If it proves popular, Nintendo could see even more competition at its hands.

"Technologically, it's not a leap of the imagination to see Apple, Google, Microsoft do something like this," he says.

Obama opens landmark visit to Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Launching a landmark visit to long shunned Myanmar, President Barack Obama said Monday he comes to "extend the hand of friendship" to a nation moving from persecution to peace. But his praise and personal attention came with an admonition to those in charge: The work of ensuring and protecting freedoms has just begun.

On an overcast and steamy day, Obama touched down Monday morning, becoming the first U.S. president to visit the Asian nation also known as Burma. Tens of thousands of people in the long repressed country packed the streets to see his motorcade speed through the city. Many of them waved American flags and took photos with their smartphones.

After meeting with President Thein Sein, who has orchestrated much of his country's transition to democracy, Obama said the reforms "in Myanmar" could unleash "the incredible potential of this beautiful country."

Obama's language alone was significant. The United States still officially refers to the country as Burma, after the former ruling junta summarily changed the name years ago to Myanmar. But U.S. officials ? and now Obama ? have been less rigid about using the old name as relations change.

Obama will also meeting with longtime Myanmar democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi in the home where she spent years under house arrest, a gated compound with a lawn ringed by roses.

Obama will close with a speech at the University of Yangon, praising the country's progress toward democracy but urge further reforms.

"Instead of being repressed, the right of people to assemble together must now be fully respected," the president said in speech excerpts released by the White House. "Instead of being stifled, the veil of media censorship must continue to be lifted. As you take these steps, you can draw on your progress."

Obama's visit to Myanmar was to last just six hours, but it carries significant symbolism, reflecting a remarkable turnaround in the countries' relationship.

Obama has rewarded Myanmar's rapid adoption of democratic reforms by lifting some economic penalties. The president has appointed a permanent ambassador to the country, and pledged greater investment if Myanmar continues to progress following a half-century of military rule.

In his speech, Obama recalls a promise he made upon taking office ? that the United States would extend a hand if those nations that ruled in fear unclenched their fists.

"Today, I have come to keep my promise, and extend the hand of friendship," he said. "The flickers of progress that we have seen must not be extinguished. They must become a shining North Star for all this nation's people."

Some human rights groups say Myanmar's government, which continues to hold hundreds of political prisoners and is struggling to contain ethnic violence, hasn't done enough to earn a personal visit from Obama. The president said from Thailand on Sunday that his visit is not an endorsement of the government in Myanmar, but an acknowledgment that dramatic progress is underway and it deserves a global spotlight.

Obama came down the steps of Air Force One next to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, in recognition of their final foreign trip together. Clinton is leaving the job soon.

The president's stop came between visits to Thailand and Cambodia. His Asia tour also marks his formal return to the world stage after months mired in a bruising re-election campaign. For his first postelection trip, he tellingly settled on Asia, a region he has deemed the region as crucial to U.S. prosperity and security.

Aides say Asia will factor heavily in Obama's second term as the U.S. seeks to expand its influence in an attempt to counter China.

China's rise is also at play in Myanmar, which long has aligned itself with Beijing. But some in Myanmar fear that China is taking advantage of its wealth of natural resources, so the country is looking for other partners to help build its nascent economy.

Even as Obama turned his sights on Asia, widening violence in the Middle East competed for his attention.

Obama told reporters Sunday that Israel had the right to defend itself against missile attacks from Gaza. But he urged Israel not to launch a ground assault in Gaza, saying it would put Israeli soldiers, as well as Palestinian citizens, at greater risk and hamper an already vexing peace process.

"If we see a further escalation of the situation in Gaza, the likelihood of us getting back on any kind of peace track that leads to a two-state solution is going to be pushed off way into the future," Obama said.

As for Myanmar, as he seeks to assuage critics, Obama has trumpeted Suu Kyi's support of his outreach efforts, saying Sunday that she was "very encouraging" of his trip.

The White House says Obama will express his concern for the ongoing ethnic tensions in Myanmar's western Rakhine state, where more than 110,000 people ? the vast majority of them Muslims known as Rohingya ? have been displaced.

The U.N. has called the Rohingya ? who are widely reviled by the Buddhist majority in Myanmar ? among the world's most persecuted people.

The White House says Obama will press the matter Monday with Thein Sein, along with demands to free remaining political prisoners as the nation transitions to democracy.

The president will deliver his speech at a university that was the center of the country's struggle for independence against Britain and the launching point for many pro-democracy protests. The former military junta shut the dormitories in the 1990s fearing further unrest and forced most students to attend classes on satellite campuses on the outskirts of town.

Computer Forensics may be the study of computers or computer associated information in relation to a study by an enforcement agency for use within a court of law. While this technology could be as old as computers themselves, the advances in technology are continually studying the technology of computer forensics. In the scientific old days, computer forensics was primarily linked to knowledge dumps, printing out every keystroke that were signed on a computer in a set of eight digits, all of them zeroes and ones. Virtually cases of paper will be useful for the printing of the components. Methods specialists could then need to transform every one of the information into hex and then convert the worth into regardless of the real keystroke was. In this way, it was possible to go over all of the data and figure out at what level the computer and the corresponding plan failed. Like technology and computers, Computer forensics has evolved by leaps and bounds since days past of old. While all computer language still finally boils right down to zeroes and types or binary and then hex, the means by which programs are utilized, run and created has changed considerably. Pc forensics has done well to steadfastly keep up with the job available. Today hard drives could be wiped clean. But, lacking any unconditional structure (and in rare cases, despite the switch) the info could nevertheless be restored. It requires a specialist in computer forensics nevertheless. It requires a person who is familiar with the technology of the computer and the science of computer forensics to construct all of the data that has been wiped off of the difficult drive.Computer forensics may be used to track messages, instant messaging and just about any type of computer related communications. This is often essential, today specially on earth. Computer forensics professionals have even advanced the technology to the level they can track knowledge real time, or whilst it is actually being sent and received. That is a mind-numbing job once you take into account the millions of communications going on around the world at any given time, nevertheless the technology of computer forensics is constantly developing every bit as easily or sometimes much faster compared to the technology they?re responsible for investigating.Computer forensics is a fascinating facet of technology that is often neglected. Pc forensics have been used to solve many crimes and is highly recommended a feasible resource in many ways. The analysis of computer forensics is consistently expanding along side engineering.

Charlottesville Church Holds Greek Festival

A Charlottesville church set up shop as a Greek restaurant Friday.

It was the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church's biannual Greek Festival. Authentic Greek dishes and pastries of all shapes, sizes and prices lined the tables inside the church.

Some of the Greek dishes had fancy names, but church member Mike Bournos says it's the food's fancy taste that keeps people coming back year after year.

"You just, you know they don't mean anything by just saying them, you have to actually come and taste them.? Once you do, you don't care about the name you just want to get some more," said Bournos.

The church will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad.

Online Marketing, Webinars, Digital Marketing Strategy | The ...

November 15, 2012 - Posted by Rilee Chastain

The benefits of using webinars as part of your marketing strategy.

For many businesses who offer their clients specific products and services, their average web user is typically looking to be educated by their website. ?Whether they are specifically looking to learn more about what your company can do for them, how your services differ from your competitors or simply whether or not they would like to work with you one day, most visitors looking at your business site are in research mode and are hoping to learn something more about your company.

One of the best ways to attract these potential customers to your site and keep them coming back for more is to continuously feature educational offers on your website that will not only give users the information that they are looking for, but also establishes your company as an expert in that particular topic or field of information. One of the best and most engaging ways to do this is through an online webinar.

A webinar is simply an online seminar or training session presented live on the internet. During these sessions, a moderator from a particular company or industry shares information to an audience who have ?gathered? virtually from computers anywhere around the world. Some webinars include presentations, video, interactive Q & As and more, while others simply act as an online lecture about an important topic that may be of interest to certain industry members.

However, the main benefit of these webinars is the fact that it allows your company to connect with prospects and customers that are spread all over the world, all from the comfort of your desk. Also, if this key marketing tool is used correctly, it can not only boost your customer satisfaction and expertise in your industry, but it can also open the doors for more leads for your company.

Here are four more reasons why you should include webinars as part of your company?s marketing strategy:

Educates Your Audience

Webinars are a great way to offer educational industry information to both your clients and any prospects who are visiting your website. Plus, because of the live nature of webinars, the audience is able to ask questions and drill down the topics and information that interests them the most, rather than you guessing at what points will be the most popular.

Builds Credibility

Webinars offer a certain level of intimacy with your audience, which can help to give you an advantage when it comes time to sell. For instance, your audience can hear your voice and interact with you on a personal level throughout your online presentation?the next best thing to meeting with someone face-to-face. Your audience can build up an emotional relationship which, in turn, also increases?likability?and trust.

Generates Great Leads

Many businesses who offer webinars often have attendees sign up before hand through a registration form which collects their name and email address?something that your users will view as a small price to pay for beneficial educational material. Not only will you be driving traffic to your page by promoting a webinar landing page or registration form, but it also works as a way to create a list of potential leads that your sales team can follow up with once the webinar has finished.

Offers A Chance To Gather Testimonials

Many users who are visiting your company website are looking to see whether or not you are a credible authority in your industry, and webinars are a great way to prove this point and gather helpful reviews and feedback. Once your webinar has finished, send a thank you email to attendees asking if they would like to review the online event. This will not only help to refine your content for future webinars, but testimonials will confirm to prospects that you know what you?re talking about.

Does your company utilize webinars as an online marketing tool? How has your experience been either attending or hosting these types of events? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Should the buyer fail to comply with any of the foregoing requirements the lot or lots which have been subject to an Announcement of Sale to him or any part thereof may, without further notice, be re-offered for sale, destroyed or otherwise disposed of by the Auctioneer in any manner as it shall in its absolute discretion deem fit, and any monies paid shall be forfeited.

Without prejudice to any claims that the Auctioneer and/or the seller may have against the buyer for breach of contract or otherwise the buyer will become liable from the Clearance Date/Removal Date for all storage, security and administration expenses and the cost of and incidental to re-selling and/or otherwise disposing of uncleared items.

7. Buyer's responsibilities and conduct

The buyer will be responsible for all damage that it, its carriers or its agents may do to the property of any third party (and, in particular, to the seller's premises) in removing the lot(s) it has purchased. Should the Auctioneer consider such damage likely to occur, it may require the buyer to deposit such sum of money with the Auctioneer, by way of security for the costs of reinstating that part of the premises likely to be damaged by the removal of a lot, as the Auctioneer may require. Should the buyer refuse to deposit such monies, the Auctioneer may refuse the buyer access to the seller's premises for the purpose of collecting all or any of the lots it has purchased, or rescind the sale of such lot.

By placing a Bid on a lot, the buyer represents, warrants and undertakes that it has the authority and capacity to enter such Bid and close the transaction and that any Bid that it makes constitutes an irrevocable offer to buy the lot in question for the full amount of the Bid.

8. International statutory compliance exclusion
