Wolverines welcome another out-of-state foe in Texas 5A champs from Euless-Trinity | Prep football news

With four straight 3A state championships, nine since 2001 and wins over every marquee name in Washington prep football, the Bellevue Wolverines have been forced to get creative in recent years to gain national recognition and put its powerhouse program on display to those outside of the Pacific Northwest.

It started in 2005 with the streak-busting win over De La Salle and has continued in the years since with wins over Long Beach Poly and most recently Oaks Christian in 2011. Games against other top programs from California and Texas have also helped bolster the reputation of a program that has found itself a mainstay atop national prep polls.

But this year, Bellevue may have accomplished its most impressive feat yet: enticing a Texas prep team to travel outside its state boarders.

Euless-Trinity will be the opponent for the Wolverines on August 30 at Seattle Memorial Stadium and the game will offer a chance for each of the two programs to buck perception or reinforce it.

As for the game itself, there will be no shortage of talent on the field with at least a dozen Division I prospects in action.

For Bellevue, University of Washington commit Sean Constantine and future UCLA Bruin Myles Jack lead a team loaded with speed and one that is no stranger to facing more heralded opponents.

John Nguyen and Dakota Jones also return in the Bellevue backfield and bring big-game experience to a unit that will help break in a new starting quarterback after the graduation of All-State performer Tyler Hasty, now at Oregon State.

Budda Baker, a junior who has already garnered a handful of scholarship offers for his services as a return man and defensive back, is another burner for coach Butch Goncharoff and the Wolverines' team speed has led the official tagline for the game: "Thunder & Lightening."

Trinity, which lost the majority of its starters from a year ago, will bring the thunder portion of the equation, countering the Bellevue quicks with Utah commit Sam Tevi, a 6-5, 270 pound defensive tackle who continues the long line of run-stuffers for the Trojans. Gaius Vaenuka, Hafoka Olie and Jason Reese are just a few of the other recognizable names with Division-I offers already on the table.

Facing a host of future collegiate stars is no new feat for Bellevue, which met the likes of Skyline, Oaks Christian and Lakes last year.

All three were supposed to possess far too much skill and firepower for the plodding, Wing-T Wolverines.

But as they have on so many other occasions, Bellevue found ways to limit the impact of current Pac-12 players Ishmael Adams, Jordan Payton, Cedric Dozier, Ma?ne Manaea and Zach Banner, and intercepted USC commit Max Browne twice, winning all three games decisively.

Euless, Tex. is home to more Tongans than any other city in the nation and the cultural mesh at Trinity goes from the hallways- where a flag for every nation that is represented in the student body hangs- to the field, where the Trojans perform the haka, a traditional Maori war cry that is part of a host of Polynesian cultures, including Tongan, before each game.

A win over the three-time Texas 5A champions could provide a boost similar to what the 2011 team experienced after beating Oaks Christian to open the season.

Bellevue returned to in-state competition in dominating fashion the following week with a 31-17 win over eventual 4A state champion Skyline and rolled through the 3A KingCo schedule before surviving game efforts from Lakes, Kamiakin and O'Dea in the state tournament to capture its fourth consecutive 3A state title.

It will again be a 4A KingCo foe circling above for week two, as the Wolverines will travel to Bothell in week two before opening conference play the following Friday against Sammamish.

Nats blank Cards; Gonzalez gets win No. 17

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:30 p.m. ET Aug. 31, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Gio Gonzalez earned his 17th win with his first career shutout, and the Nationals handed Adam Wainwright his shortest start this season as Washington routed the St. Louis Cardinals 10-0 on Friday night.

Adam LaRoche, Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman each drove in two runs and the Nationals sent 10 batters to the plate during a four-run third inning against Wainwright (13-11), who entered 5-0 in August.

Perfect through three innings, Gonzalez (17-7) held the suddenly anemic St. Louis lineup hitless through four innings. He finished with eight strikeouts and walked three during his 119-pitch outing en route to his fourth win in five starts and third career complete game.

The left-hander tied Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto and New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey for the major league lead in wins.

Zimmerman smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Jayson Werth had three hits for the NL East-leading Nationals, who have won three straight, two coming against the slumping Cardinals.

St. Louis, the National League leaders in batting average and runs scored, has tallied only one run during their four-game losing streak while allowing 32. The Cardinals entered the day one-half game ahead of Pittsburgh for the final National League wild-card slot.

LaRoche's single in the first inning drove in two runs.

Harper finished 2 of 4, his third straight game with two hits, including a two-run single in the fifth. The 19-year old is batting .429 (6 of 14) with two homers and eight RBIs in his last three games.

The Nationals have won five straight against the Cardinals overall and eight of nine at home dating back to 2010.

Wainwright allowed six runs and nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The right-hander yielded only six earned runs in 36 2-3 innings over his previous five starts.

Gonzalez walked two straight starting the fourth. He was out of danger two batters later, getting Matt Holliday to ground into a double play and Allen Craig to fly out.

Yadier Molina ended any thoughts of a no-hitter with a leadoff double in the fifth, but the Cardinals left him stranded. Two more runners reached in the sixth, but Gonzalez escaped with another double play.

The Nationals picked on Wainwright early with two runs on four hits in the first inning as LaRoche's opposite field single to left scored Werth and Harper.

Wainwright also put consecutive runners on opening the third inning and after recording one out, he allowed three straight run-scoring hits, starting with Ian Desmond's single.

After a wild pitch advanced two runners into scoring position, Danny Espinosa and Kurt Suzuki each drove in a run with the fourth and fifth hits of the inning. Gonzalez laid down a sacrifice bunt and Werth laced an RBI single for a 6-0 lead.

Werth finished 3 of 3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.

Before the game the Cardinals placed All-Star shortstop Rafael Furcal on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right elbow. Shortstop Pete Kozma, promoted from Triple-A Memphis, batted eighth and finished 0 for 2 in his season debut.

NOTES: The Cardinals said outfielder Lance Berkman would be activated from the 15-day DL on Saturday. He's been out since Aug. 3 with an injured right knee. . Nationals RHP Chien-Ming Wang is expected to make at least one more start while on rehab assignment at Double-A Harrisburg before returning to the majors, manager Davey Johnson said. Wang has been out since July 1 with a hip injury. . Johnson also announced infielder Mark DeRosa, out since Aug. 5 with a groin injury, would be activated off the disabled list on Saturday. .Jordan Zimmermann will start Saturday for Washington against fellow right-hander Kyle Lohse.

Surgeon, officials review Ohio transplant error

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Health officials and a consulting surgeon are reviewing a living-donor kidney transplant program that's been temporarily suspended by a northwest Ohio hospital, where a donated kidney apparently was put with medical waste instead of going to the intended recipient in what medical experts describe as a rare accident.

The University of Toledo Medical Center apologized and put two nurses and an administrator of surgical services on paid leave without public explanation following the Aug. 10 error. It also sent letters notifying 975 patients and potential organ donors and recipients that they may need to make other arrangements for services typically provided through the program under review.

UTMC is "committed to ensuring safeguards are put in place to prevent such an incident from ever happening again," Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the vice president for health affairs, said in a statement. The review is expected to take several weeks.

State health officials say they're looking into the error on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and UTMC hired a Texas surgeon to evaluate its transplant procedures. Dr. Marlon Levy, surgical director for transplantation at Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth, was expected to visit Toledo on Thursday and Friday.

The hospital has refused to publicly share much detail about how the kidney was rendered unusable during the transplant, which typically is an hourslong surgery involving a five-person medical team removing the organ from a donor, transferring it to a steel container and transplanting it to a patient in close proximity.

"Somehow, some way, an inexplicable human error made someone think that the kidney apparently was already in the recipient body when it was not," the UTMC president, Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, told The Blade in Toledo.

The local health commissioner, Dr. David Grossman, told the newspaper that a doctor who was involved said a nurse accidentally disposed of the kidney. Grossman did not respond to phone messages from The Associated Press.

The man who donated the kidney and the intended recipient, his sister, have been released from the medical center. The hospital hasn't identified the family, and it can't say whether the sister has received a different kidney, UTMC spokesman Tobin Klinger said. There was a "good chance" of finding another compatible donor, the facility has said.

Kidneys are the most commonly transplanted organ. More than 5,700 kidney transplants involving living donors and 11,000 with deceased donors were performed last year in the United States, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, which maintains the national patient waiting list and is administered by the United Network for Organ Sharing. UTMC performed 16 of those living-donor kidney transplants and 37 deceased-donor transplants in 2011.

The types of problems that lead to unsuccessful transplants ? and occasionally program suspension or termination ? are uncommon but can include an unexpected donor disease transmission or the death of a living donor, said Joel Newman, a spokesman for UNOS, the private, nonprofit, government-contracted organization that manages the organ transplant system in the U.S.

"The occurrence of such events is rare, but in those instances it is a very common procedure for the program to inactivate for a period of time, do some root cause analysis and really try to address any sort of issues that can be corrected," Newman said.

As UTMC takes such steps, three workers are suspended. The administrator of surgical services, Edwin Hall, isn't commenting, according to a woman who answered the phone at his Michigan home on Wednesday. The two suspended nurses, Melanie Lemay and Judith Moore, could not be reached for comment.

The surgeon involved in the transplant has not been suspended.

Amid squalor and fear on Turkish border, Syrians make plea for safe zone

So many Syrians have shown up along the Turkish border,?hoping to cross and enter a refugee camp, that Turkey is calling on the international community to create a safe zone for them inside Syria.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / August 30, 2012

Refugees from the northern Syrian City of Azaz make the best of their situation at the Bab al-Salama border crossing in Kilis, Turkey. Thousands of internally displaced refugees are now living in this border region unable to cross into Turkey for asylum.

In this camp that has sprung up along the Turkish border, 5,000 Syrians who have fled their country's civil war live under covered vehicle lanes on an unfinished section of the Syrian border, waiting to cross into Turkey or return to their homes. Sleeping out in the open on asphalt and scrounging for clean water, they hope that they will be allowed into Turkey, where they can find a truly safe haven in an established refugee camp.

But Turkey, overwhelmed by a surge of Syrian refugees, is instead expected to call on the United Nations today to create a safe zone inside Syria to stem the tide coming over the border.

A safe zone along the border would offer Turkey a place to redirect refugees, but a number of political complications make the formation of such an area unlikely ? a reality all too familiar for thousands of beleaguered Syrian refugees unable to enter Turkey or escape the violence in Syria.

?The safe zone is a dream. It will not happen. The world is against us,? says Abdul Qadir Haj, a former Syrian policeman who fled to a camp near the Bab al-Salama border crossing into Turkey, a short drive from Aleppo. The camp is now home to about 5,000 refugees.

In just the past two weeks, the refugee issue has exploded in Turkey and Jordan, the other major recipient of Syrian refugees. Previously Turkey received about 400 to 500 Syrians each day, but those numbers have recently climbed to as many as 5,000 per day, according to the UN.

Some 80,000 refugees are now in Turkey, and UN officials say those numbers could reach 200,000 if the conflict continues to escalate. Already there are an estimated 2.5 million people inside Syria who need humanitarian assistance and 1.2 million who are internally displaced.

Turkey originally said it could host no more than 100,000 refugees, but the construction of several new refugee camps has increased its capacity to 150,000. Concerned about absorbing such a high number of refugees, Turkey has been among those in the international community pushing hardest for the creation of a safe zone inside Syria.

Even without the creation of an official safe zone, much of the area along the border with Turkey is now under the control of the Free Syrian Army. The opposition group now controls the Bab al-Salama border crossing and many of the towns north of Aleppo.

The absence of government forces means there is little fighting in the area, but those who have fled say the area remains unsafe as long as Syrian government forces have airplanes and artillery.

In Azzaz, a town just a few miles from the border crossing and refugee camp, locals say government planes have bombed several buildings in recent weeks. Other towns in the area surrounding Aleppo face regular artillery fire and aerial bombardment. There are also concerns about unofficial militias attacking residents.

?We want a safe zone. The planes can come here at any time and bomb us. Right now it?s only safe inside Turkey,? says Zahara Umm Hasa, a widow who fled to the Bab al-Salama refugee camp about two weeks ago.

With the threat of bombing still looming, there are few humanitarian organizations offering assistance.?

Meanwhile, those inside the camps say conditions are worsening as the number of refugees increases.?In the Bab al-Salama camp, refugees live under the shaded sections of visa processing lanes in an unfinished section of the Syrian border crossing. Families have rolled out woven plastic mats to make sitting and sleeping on the asphalt slightly less uncomfortable.??

Aside from a few lucky families who sleep in small rooms intended intended for passport police, refugees sleep shoulder-to-shoulder under a concrete roof that provides relief from the sun, but no other protection from the elements.?

The few humanitarian groups working in the camps provide medicine and food. Local vendors from nearby towns also visit the camp to sell food and other items. Although refugees say they have enough food for now, they complain that there is limited access to clean water.

With refugees crowded together with extremely limited sanitation facilities, the squalor has led to?health problems, especially for children.?Refugees say they've only met one doctor in the camp who can help those who fall ill, and he seldom has enough medicine to treat all those who need it.?

?We work in danger here. We are close to the bombing,? says Osman Atalay, a board member for the Foundation for Human Rights and Freedom and Humanitarian Relief, a Turkish humanitarian organization that is among a small handful providing assistance to Syrian refugees at the Bab al-Salama border crossing. ?There are many organizations who want to help. If they make the decision to create a safe zone maybe more will come.?

To be truly protected, the safe zone would need to be accompanied by an internationally imposed no-fly zone, which would prevent the possibility of air strikes. But the international community remains unwilling to create a no-fly zone in Syria, despite strong support from France. Additionally, while the FSA has control of much of the border region, it remains unclear how capable they would be of protecting a safe zone in the event of an attack.

?The FSA cannot protect all the people here because the regime still has many supporters,"?says Saleem Shams, a student from Aleppo University currently in the refugee camp, who worries that there may be dormant pro-government supporters who would help in such an attack. "There is no reason to stay in our cities because there is no way to study or work,? he adds.
