Israel hands over remains of Palestinian militants

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel on Thursday handed over the remains of 91 Palestinian militants, including suicide bombers, to the West Bank government in an effort to induce President Mahmoud Abbas to renew peace talks.

All 91 were killed over the past decades while carrying out suicide bombings or other attacks on Israeli targets, Palestinian officials said. At least one of the attacks dated back to the 1970s.

The bodies had been buried in coffins in Israel and were dug up for the transfer. The Palestinian official in charge of Thursday's transfer, Salem Khileh, said Israeli officials handed over the remains to Palestinian liaisons in the Jordan Valley.

Eighty bodies were then transported to Ramallah, and 11 to the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Near the crossing from Israel to Gaza, families held framed pictures of their dead sons as they awaited the bodies. Ahmad Kahlout's 21-year-old son Yehiya was killed 17 years ago after he raided an Israeli settlement.

"I am happy they are sending back his body so I can go and pray on his grave before I die," said Kahlout, 78. "Until my dying day I will be proud of him, but also sad for the years I wasn't able to visit his grave."

Palestinian government ceremonies honoring the dead militants were to be held in the West Bank and Gaza later Thursday.

"We hope that this humanitarian gesture will serve both as a confidence-building measure and help get the peace process back on track," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said.

"Israel is ready for the immediate resumption of peace talks without any preconditions whatsoever," Regev added.

Abbas has given no sign that the gesture would persuade him to return to talks.

On Wednesday, he reiterated that the Palestinians would not return to negotiations unless Israel freezes all settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Palestinians see those areas, captured by Israel in 1967, as the core of a future state that would also include Gaza.

Israel rejects that demand. Israeli-Palestinian talks stalled more than three years ago and have failed to take off again despite U.S. mediation, primarily because of the dispute over settlement construction.

CPI International To Acquire Codan Satcom | NEWS.GNOM.ES

PALO ALTO, Calif. and NEWTON, South Australia, May 30, 2012 /NEWS.GNOM.ES/ ? CPI International Holding Corp. and its wholly owned subsidiary CPI International, Inc. (CPI), a leading provider of microwave, radio frequency (RF), power and control solutions for critical defense, communications, medical and other applications, today announced they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Codan Satcom business from Codan Limited (ASX: CDA).? Codan Satcom is a prominent supplier of solid-state RF subsystems for satellite communications services to commercial and government end users.? Codan Satcom has operations in Newton, South Australia and Boalsburg, Pa.

Under the terms of the agreement, CPI will acquire Codan Satcom for a payment of $9.0 million in cash, subject to certain adjustments, to be funded entirely from cash on hand.? If certain financial and other objectives are achieved in the two years following the acquisition, CPI has also agreed to make additional earnout payments to Codan of up to $4.5 million.? CPI will acquire certain of the Australian-based assets of Codan Satcom, as well as Codan Satcom?s Pennsylvania-based Locus Microwave operations.? The Pennsylvania-based operations were formerly Locus Microwave, Inc., a manufacturer of microwave radio products for satellite communications, before that company was acquired by Codan Limited in April 2009.

CPI intends to integrate the Codan Satcom business into its Communications & Medical Products Division in Ontario, Canada.? The Australian-based operations of Codan Satcom, which design and manufacture C-band and Ku-band subsystems and block-up converters (BUCs), will be relocated to CPI?s existing Canadian facilities over a period of approximately nine months.? The Pennsylvania-based Locus Microwave operations, which design and manufacture X-band and Ku-band BUCs, primarily for military communications applications, will remain in their current location and are expected to expand as CPI increases the capabilities of those operations.? CPI plans to retain a number of key research and development personnel from the Australian-based operations and establish a local engineering center for these employees.

?Codan Satcom has been recognized as a well-established world leader in solid-state RF subsystems for satellite communications for many years,? said Joe Caldarelli, chief executive officer of CPI. ??They have successfully served a global base of customers with specialized products and world-class manufacturing expertise.? Alexander Kinyua, Maryland College Student, Admits Devouring Roommate's Brain and Heart

Maybe this zombie apocalypse thing really does have legs.

In another horrifying incident of human flesh-eating, Alexander Kinyua, a student in Maryland, allegedly admitted to devouring his roommate's brain and heart.

The 21-year-old Morgan State University student says he killed Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, who was reported missing last Friday, cops told the Baltimore Sun.

Kinyua's father called police late Tuesday night when Kinyua's brother reportedly found human remains, a head and two hands, in a metal tin in the basement.

The brother and father left the room for a short time, but when they came back, the body parts had been moved and Alexander Kinyua was washing out the tin.

Officers searched the house and arrested Kinyua.

The man then allegedly confessed a shocking revelation eerily reminiscent of Rudy Eugene: not only had he killed Agyei-Kodie by cutting him up with a knife and then dismembered him, he ingested parts of the victim's brain and all of his heart.

He allegedly dropped most of the remains in a dumpster.

It's yet unclear what Kinyua's motive may have been (no, there were no bath salts involved), but he was charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday.

The gruesome case comes on the heels of a similar attack in Miami, in which Rudy Eugene was killed after eating homeless man Ronald Poppo's face.

Yesterday, France (of which I am a citoyen) made it a whole lot easier for me to do so. I cast my ballot online in parliamentary elections ? the first time this has been allowed.

In fact, France is only the second country in the world to allow Internet voting in a national election, (Estonia has been doing it since 2007), offering an online ballot to citizens living abroad. Not only that, we were voting for one of 11 seats in parliament specifically reserved (for the first time) for deputies representing expatriates.

I say the system made it ?a whole lot easier.?

But, not exactly. In fact, all in all, it probably took me longer than it would have done to nip over to the French embassy to vote in person at the polling station there next Sunday. But that was because of security concerns, and it took a phone call to a helpline agent in France to sort out various problems with Java script before I could cast my virtual vote.

Security concerns, of course, are what stop Americans from being able to vote online. The Pentagon tried a system in 2000 for its personnel deployed overseas, but decided it was too vulnerable to hackers and abandoned it.

The French are pretty cautious too. Only people registered at a French consulate could vote online, and each voter needed a 10 character personal code sent (once only) by SMS to a mobile phone and another 10 character password sent to a verified e-mail address.

I am no computer geek, but if complexity is any indication of security I am comfortable with the procedures in place. After I had voted I was sent a ?control code? that I can use to ensure that my vote is counted: that code comprised 337 digits, symbols, and letters in upper and lower case, more than four lines.

If my math is right, that means there are 65 to the power of 337 possible combinations of the components of my code. Pretty personalized.

In fact the technical aspects of voting were only the half of it. The real challenge was political: My constituency covers 41 countries, from Vanuatu to Ukraine, and I had to choose among 21 candidates, only one of whom I had heard of before the elections.

He was a minister in recently-defeated President Nicolas Sarkozy?s last government and is the only candidate presenting himself in my constituency who has never lived abroad. As far as I?m concerned, that rules him out from the start.
