Public speaking from the Staines snowball to confidence-boosting in ...

The Civil Service Pensioners Alliance, Bournemouth and District Group

My first talk in May was back here in Bournemouth, a presentation about Patrick Campbell for the Bournemouth and District Group of the Civil Service Pensioners Alliance, who meet at St Michael's Church Hall. My last booking for them had been in March 2006 and they were a very good audience on both occasions. Afterwards I had enquiries about speaking to other organisations, including one some distance away which I would be delighted to do

Public Speaking Tip #478: You might be surprised at how far some audience members will travel to an event. A successful presentation may lead to enquiries about speaking in other areas.

Among the audience was Jim Kerr AKA comedy writer Frank E Tennis. It was good to finally meet him after being aware of his name and work for so many years. My best wishes to him.

Surrey County Council Staff Retirement Association AGM, Woking

My next booking was in Woking for a group of retired Surrey County Council staff following their AGM at the town's Trinity Methodist Church. I was met at the station by two members who acted as human sat-navs to walk me to the venue (something of a first!)

The group very kindly treated me to lunch and then I waited for their AGM to finish. In the end it ran for longer than expected and I adjusted the duration of My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer to allow for this.

Public Speaking Tip #479: Any presentation following a business meeting may have to be shortened if the items on the organisation's agenda involve more discussion than anticipated. This is especially likely to happen when it's an annual meeting.

The talk went really well and I was asked for my details to pass on to half a dozen further groups despite there only being around 35 in the audience for this talk!

Public Speaking Tip #480: A successful presentation for a small audience may still produce a surprisingly high number of enquiries about speaking to other organisations.

This continues what I am now calling the 'Staines snowball', a large number of ongoing speaking engagements, all from recommendations, that started with my talk for Staines and District Probus Club in July 2010! This Woking booking soon led to two further talks.

Newspaper interviews as a source of quotations for speeches

On the way to my next booking, I picked up a copy of the free paper Metro on the train. It's a good source of quirky news stories for topical gags but I often read the features as well. This edition had an excellent interview with the actor Eddie Marsan and as I read it, I was struck by how many of his answers would make great contemporary quotations to include in various types of speech (always crediting the source, of course).

Since last year I have opened the talk My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer with a quote from an interview Griff Rhys Jones gave about...comedy writing. It fits perfectly but sometimes I find quotes from interviewees from seemingly unrelated fields who have said something that is still very apt for one of my presentations.

Public Speaking Tip #481: Speakers often use sayings from books of quotations, motivational speakers (frequently over-used!) or other obvious sources. Don't overlook the contemporary, including newspaper interviews. Fewer audience members will be familiar with them and an unexpected source adds further interest.

This demonstrates what I said in my December 2011 post?about reading widely and quoting from a broad range of sources.

Marlow and District U3A, Buckinghamshire

I was reading the interview mentioned above during a journey on a boiling hot day to give an afternoon talk on My Life as a Freelance Comedy Writer to?Marlow and District U3A. After changing trains at Reading I found myself on a delightful single-track rural route to this most attractive town. One of the stations I passed through was at Bourne End, a place which was for many years home to the subject of one of my other talks, Patrick Campbell. I was able to mention this during my extremely well received presentation. People are always asking me who my humour heroes are and I so I was able to list one with a very local connection. (Of course, it also acted as a naturally-introduced plug for another of my presentations!)

Public Speaking Tip #482: Tailored local references in presentations can also include somewhere nearby that you passed through on the way, not just the location of the venue itself.

A really super audience in a beautiful area. I was most grateful for the lift from the Liston Hall to the station as I didn't fancy walking back in that heat, especially as my day's work wasn't over...

Coaching for another Mayor-making

The same council that booked me for script-editing and coaching for Mayor-making ceremonies in 2010 and 2011 made it a hat-trick this year! The final session was booked for the evening following my talk in Marlow, with the ceremony due to take place the next day, so I travelled to this particular council's offices after my talk had finished. I got there at the appointed time only to discover that due to some administrative problem there was no room available where we could work so the Mayor-Elect and myself found ourselves in a nearby cafe!

Now I have found cafes to be fantastic places to write in over the years but they are perhaps not the most suitable venues for presentation skills training!?

Fortunately it wasn't too busy and we were able to achieve some further progress through discussion and my passing on advice but obviously these preparations could not involve standing and projecting, especially as the script was a speech intended to be heard for the first time at the council meeting the next day in which the ceremony was included. It was a good job we had worked together on the Mayor's delivery during a long meeting two days earlier which had included a proper rehearsal in the Council Chamber.

Public Speaking Tip #483: Sometimes it may be impossible to find the ideal environment for the most complete last-minute rehearsal for a public speaking event but even if there is no setting where you can 'stand and deliver', you should still practise in whatever way you can, whether it's working on the script, a whispered run-through or just going over the whole speech in your mind.

I attended the ceremony the next day. I have mentioned before that the audiences for these events are never the warmest but the new Mayor didn't appear to be intimidated by them. One of my Twelve Tips for Terrified Speakers is:

"Before you say anything, spend a few seconds looking around at your audience, smiling if possible. This makes you look confident, friendly and unhurried".

That is exactly what the Mayor did, in a way that really impressed me, and the speech was delivered in a clear and personable style.

Public Speaking Tip #484: Pausing to look around at your audience before you speak buys you great credibility in terms of appearing authoritative and unfazed by the occasion.

My best wishes to the new Mayor.

Magna Carta Country Winemakers, Wraysbury

The month ended with a second visit to the Magna Carta Country Winemakers in the Village Halls in Wraysbury, just eight months after my previous booking. Once again I was treated to refreshments before my talk, once again they were a great audience and once again I received a great testimonial:

"Thank you so much for coming to Wraysbury to speak at our meeting yesterday evening. Our members found your talk very interesting and I had lots of very favourable comments during the break.?It was lovely to see you again and I shall definitely be in touch to book you again in the future.?Many thanks Nick".?

And thank you for the hospitality and lift to the station. A really enjoyable public speaking experience to round off the month.

Too Much Confrontation? (Confronting Friends, Part 2 ...

confronting a friendConfrontation with anyone, let alone our friends, can be difficult. One of the skills we hope to develop is how to speak up for ourselves and advocate for our needs with other people. This doesn?t only mean learning how to ask for what we want, but also learning how to confront others when we feel wronged or in some way upset by them.

When strengthening a previous area of personal weakness and developing a new skill, it is a common tendency to overcompensate. For example, if our previous difficulty was handling conflict or issues with confrontation, and we learn new skills to confront in a healthy manner, we may start confronting more often?than necessary, almost as if we seek opportunities for confrontation practice.

It often takes a struggle in this area before people realize that there?is?such thing as too much confrontation. It?s a good thing to be able to handle conflict in a healthy manner, but it?s not healthy or necessary to confront people every time we feel frustrated.

Even when you become the master of confrontation and handling conflict, it?s important to still choose battles wisely. Part of dealing with frustrations with other people is being able to internally sort out the issues to see what?s necessary to open up between you and the other person involved.

Why not just confront every issue with our new confrontation skills? Isn?t it important to communicate and not hold things inside?

It is important to communicate well, but it?s equally important to know when the interpersonal confrontation needs, or doesn?t need, to happen.?Part of being a good communicator is also understanding when it?s?not?necessary to confront and let something go.?

Remember, when we are annoyed or frustrated by something and we choose to raise the issue, we?re not opening the conversation only to say we are frustrated, we?re also looking for our friends to respond by adjusting their actions to accommodate this in the future. Each time we raise an issue, it?s asking for an accommodation to be made. If this is overdone, it could put stress on the relationship,?including putting the other person in the position of closing off to us and becoming more cautious around us rather than open.

When there is an issue that one could confront, it is good to first understand the issue internally, and then decide if this is an issue that?s worthy of addressing, or letting go.?Letting something go doesn?t mean that we should leave issues unresolved. On the contrary, it means that we choose?to actually?let it go,?without further need to confront. It?s those issues that we process internally that we are still are unable to resolve within ourselves that may need confrontation ? the issues where we can?t let go. However, if we find we?re having trouble letting go of issues on a regular basis, it?s possible that some outside help could be useful to understand our own internal process.

In every relationship or friendship, there comes a point when a person needs to make a decision to accept a person for his or her limitations, or decide to remove themselves from that person, if they are triggering constant emotional distress. Even if our every emotional need isn?t met in our relationships, using our confrontation skills in a healthy manner helps us to balance our relationships to where our primary needs are being met.

There is 'will' to strengthen euro: Merkel in China

German leader Angela Merkel said Thursday there was "absolute political will" to strengthen the euro, as she held talks with China's premier Wen Jiabao on the eurozone crisis.

"I told Premier Wen that very many reforms are going on now, and that there is an absolute political will to turn the euro into a strong currency again," Merkel told reporters after meeting Wen.

Wen said at a joint press conference held by the two leaders that he was reassured by Merkel's comments on the euro, and that China would continue to invest, but he cautioned that the road to recovery would not be smooth.

"China has always had confidence in the eurozone, and we are happy to see greater use of the renminbi by European countries in trade and economic transactions," he added, referring to China's currency.

Europeans have expressed the hope that China could deploy some of its foreign exchange reserves -- the world's largest -- to invest in European Union bailout funds, although there is little sign of this happening yet.

With the nearly three-year-old eurozone debt crisis showing signs of spreading to China, the world's second largest economy, Beijing views Germany as a key player in tackling the problem.

The two will also be looking to bolster economic ties, with reports emerging that China has signed a $3.5 billion deal with Airbus.

Leading several ministers and a high-powered business delegation, Merkel met Wen at the start of her two-day trip, during which the German chancellor will also travel to an assembly plant of European planemaker Airbus in nearby Tianjin city.

"China and Germany, both as major economies and... manufacturing and exporting giants, have been working together to address the crisis," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao wrote in the state-run China Daily newspaper.

"This bilateral relationship... has gone beyond a bilateral scope and acquired global significance."

Germany is China's top trade partner in the EU with nearly half of all European exports to China coming from Germany. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of all EU imports from China land in Germany.

Bilateral trade between the two powers reached $169 billion in 2011, an 18.9-percent rise on the previous year.

"Germany is an export-oriented economy, while China has the largest market in the world," Song said, adding the two nations could cooperate on emerging industries, infrastructure and renewable energy, among other areas.

Merkel was also expected to raise non-economic issues with Wen, including sensitive topics such as the Syrian crisis and human rights and press freedom in China.

China has joined Russia in repeatedly using their vetoes to scuttle UN Security Council resolutions aimed at tackling the deadly conflict in Syria, putting them at odds with western powers.

Merkel is likely to raise the issue of the freedom of the press with Wen following complaints by German journalists who say the difficulties of reporting in China are increasing.

Before this visit, German journalists working in China wrote a letter to Merkel saying authorities in Beijing had been "wilfully obstructing" their work by threatening not to renew their visas and intimidating local assistants.

A German official confirmed that the topic of human rights would also be on the agenda, amid pressure on Merkel to raise the issue of Tibet.

Lawyers fight over notebook sent by Colorado shooting suspect

Courtroom sketch of Dr. Lynne Fenton and shooting suspect James Holmes (Bill Robles)

CENTENNIAL, Colo.?A University of Colorado therapist testified Thursday that she last saw James Holmes on June 11, nearly six weeks before he allegedly killed 12 people and wounded 58 others during a midnight screening of the new Batman movie in Aurora.

But his defense attorneys argued that their professional relationship continued beyond the last therapy session and that prosecutors should not have access to a package he mailed to Dr. Lynne Fenton on July 19, the day before the movie theater massacre. The package, viewed by many as a crucial piece of evidence, reportedly contains a notebook with violent descriptions of an attack.

Prosecutors want access to the notebook, but the shooting suspect's lawyers maintain that the package is protected under doctor-patient confidentiality and should be returned to Holmes. The package remains sealed away in an Arapahoe County court clerk's office until Judge William Sylvester can rule on the relationship.

Fenton, a psychiatrist at the school where Holmes had been a neuroscience student until he withdrew on June 10, has been on the stand for more than an hour Thursday afternoon.

According to The Denver Post, she testified that she called a campus police officer about a patient on June 11, the last day she saw Holmes. Defense lawyers objected to Fenton's identifying which patient.

"I communicated with Officer Whitten to gather more information about this case and also to communicate my concerns," Fenton testified in court.

Holmes is also present at the hearing.

0 comments - Confessions of a Stay-At-Home Mom

A courageous post from Kelly S:?

The Effect of a Traumatic Past on my Parenting Today

~~~~~
Imagine that you are a bull headed young woman in a family of 13 kids. ?You are one of seven girls. ?It is 1978, and you are graduating high school. ?You want to go to college, but your father says that women don?t go to college. ?
You are stubborn. ?You fight him tooth and nail because you have your mind set on being the first female that you know to complete college and become an independent, self supporting woman. ?Your dad goes as far as offering to buy you your own car, in a family of 13 kids mind you, and says he will also give you $2,000 if you do not go to college, but instead, you opt to pay your own way through school and go anyway. ?This is your life dream after all.
But? in your junior year of college, your father?s worst fear is realized ? you get pregnant.
Not only are your pregnant in college, but it?s with a jack ass frat boy of all people. ?Gross. ?Since your family doesn?t believe in giving children up for adoption, you keep the baby and marry the father like everyone believes you should. ?Now, this baby is the only reason you are married to a frat guy and no longer living your heart set dream of being an independent woman. ?
How do you feel towards the baby?
I didn?t know the answer to this question, but I have played the above out in my head many times. ?This scenario is what I know about the situation my mother was in at the time that I was born.
Obviously, it was less than ideal. ?There are so many factors that automatically made the circumstance a recipe for disaster ? not married, not mature, no money, no job, little support, and the list goes on and on and on.
As a result, my childhood was quite traumatic. ?The interesting thing was that the dysfunction was all behind closed doors. ?My parents were church going, family oriented people to the outside world. ?In fact, most people classified them as ?saints? for getting married, keeping me, and ?working it out.?
Behind closed doors, I was physically beat rather frequently and told that there was something wrong with me. ?The list of physical, mental, and emotional abuse that I experienced is long. ?I will spare you the details, but if you?ve ever watched a good Lifetime movie, you might have some idea. ?
Growing up, I guess I never really felt the type of love that a child feels from their parents, but I didn?t know any different. ?My sister went on to get licensed to provide therapy to children in bad situations. ?So, she has a lot of psychiatric knowledge and has told me that my problems with my parents growing up stemmed from the fact that was that I wasn?t ?unconditionally loved.?
Despite all of this, I somehow managed to grow into a normal, productive member of society. ?I went to college, got married, and even started a family of my own. ?
When my first child was born, I held him in my arms, looked into his eyes, and was immediately in love. ?As most parents know, it was a love deeper than I knew I was capable of feeling. ?It was, and still is, absolutely amazing. ?
The caveat was that all of these new and overwhelmingly positive emotions came with one big, and not so fun, realization ? I had not been loved this way as a child. ?
It was the first time that I knew this was a fact even though it had been suggested to me before. ?When I held my baby in my arms and was so incredibly overwhelmed with love, I just knew then and there that this wasn?t how my mother felt about me. ?Of course I was sad, and it hurt, but I was much too focused on my new little love to let it really affect me.
Although I wasn?t too upset by this horrible realization, as time went on, something else was affecting me, and I was completely unaware. ?It really started when I went back to work. ?While I did know that I was losing my mind about leaving my child, ?what I didn?t know was why. ?
Most moms aren?t exactly jazzed up about going back to work (if they have to) and leaving their precious new baby, but I wasn?t getting over it. ?I cried everyday for months at the thought of my baby needing me and me not being there for him. ?The thought of him crying and not being tended to appropriately? ugh, it still turns my stomach. ?So, I did everything that I could think of to fix our financial situation so that I wouldn?t have to work. ?I even met with lawyers about foreclosing on our house? ?
In the end, there was no solution. ?I just had to keep working. ?
All that I wanted was to be there for my child, but I was gone so much at work. ?So, in my effort to work through things and be the best mother possible, I went to a therapist to see if she could help me. ?The therapist pointed out that it seemed as though I was concerned that my child wouldn?t feel safe at daycare if his needs weren?t tended to promptly just as I hadn?t felt safe as a child. ?She was exactly right. ?This was the root of my anxiety.
Parenting through this ?post traumatic childhood? anxiety has been an interesting experience. ?On one hand, I would love to snap my fingers and the anxiety and scars from my past would be gone, but on the other hand, it is exactly that which has shaped my own family today in a positive way. ?
Through the therapy, I have become a better person, closer to my husband, and a kick ass parent. ?If I hadn?t had all of my past experiences, I never would have gone to talk to someone. ?I have learned so much through the therapist, and even more on my own once I knew what the root of my anxiety was.
I find it interesting how much a person?s past affects their present relationships and life decisions. ?Even without experiencing a significant ?trauma,? everyone has negative experiences that shape who they become. ?
There is a choice - people can allow bad experiences to continue to affect the rest of their lives in a damaging way, or they can choose to use that energy to produce something positive for the future, which is the case for me. ?Although it took me a long time to get to such a positive place, my past of being abused has actually produced positive things for my own family today.
I wouldn?t say the same for my parents though. ?I feel sorry for them that they haven?t gone through the amazing journey that I have in counseling. ?I have landed in a place of peace and confidence (most of the time anyway?), and they are still suffering. ?
They?re not suffering because I haven?t forgiven them. ?I moved on a long time ago. ?I believe they are suffering because they?re scared. ?They fear what would happen if they admitted to themselves the depth of the pain they inflicted on me as an outlet for their own agony at the time. ?I wish they realized that they still have time to forgive themselves for the way they handled the ?mistake? they made so long ago. ?
It?s never too late for someone to heal their past wounds. ?All it takes is a little gut to admit any dark inner thoughts and feelings to a therapist, or even just yourself, and the desire to change.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - If experts thought they knew anything about individual investors, it was this: their emotions lead them to sell winning stocks too soon and hold on to losers too long.
But new research casts doubt on this widely held theory that individual investors' decisions are driven mainly by their feelings toward losses and gains. In an innovative study, researchers found evidence that individual investors' decisions are primarily motivated by their beliefs about a stock's future.
"The story is not about whether an investor hates losing or loves gains it's not primarily a story about preferences," said Itzhak Ben-David, co-author of the study and assistant professor of finance at Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business.
"It is a story about information and speculation. The investor has a belief about where a stock is headed and that's what he acts on. Investors act more on their beliefs than their preferences."
Ben-David conducted the study with David Hirshleifer of the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine. Their results appear in the August 2012 issue of the journal Review of Financial Studies.
The researchers studied stock transactions from more than 77,000 accounts at a large discount broker from 1990 through 1996 and did a variety of analyses that had never been done before. They examined when investors bought individual stocks, when they sold them, and how much they earned or lost with each sale.
The result was a radical rethinking of why individual investors sell winning stocks and hold on to losers.
The findings don't mean that investors don't have an aversion to losses and a desire to sell winners, Ben-David said. But the trading data suggests that these feelings aren't dominating their decisions.
"People have a variety of reasons for trading stocks, which may include tax issues, margin calls, and an aversion to losses. These all may play a role, but what we show that beliefs are dominant for the trading of retail investors."
The tendency to sell winners too early and to keep losers too long has been called the "disposition effect" by economists.
"The disposition effect has been well-documented. The question is what we make of it. A lot of people look at the data and interpret it as meaning that the typical retail investor is irrational, simply reacting to their feelings about gains and losses," he said.
"But what we find is that, looking at the data, we can't really learn about their preferences. We don't learn about what they like or don't like. Surely, they don't like to lose money - but their reasons for selling stocks are more complex than that."
The simplest test was to see what investors do when a stock is trading just slightly higher or lower than the price they paid - in other words a small winner or a small loser.
If investors really did make stock trades based simply on their pleasure in making money and their aversion to realizing losses, a small winner should lead to more sales than a small loser.
But this study found that investors were not clearly more likely to sell when it was a small winner than when it was a small loser.
Another piece of evidence against the theory that investors' decisions are driven by their aversion to realizing losses was the fact that, the more a stock lost value, the more likely investors were to sell it.
"If investors had an aversion to realizing losses, larger losses should reduce the probability they would sell, but we found the opposite - larger losses were associated with a higher probability of selling," Ben-David said.
Interestingly, the stocks that investors sell the least are those that did not have a price change since purchase.
Another clue is the fact that men and frequent traders were more likely than others to sell winning stocks quickly to reap their profits and sell losers quickly to cut their losses.
"Past research has shown that overconfidence in investing is associated with men and frequent traders," Ben-David said. "They have a belief in their superior knowledge and so you would expect them to buy and sell more quickly than others as they speculate on stock prices. That's exactly what we found. They are engaged in belief-based trading."
The researchers also examined when investors were more likely to buy additional shares of a stock that they had previously purchased. They found that the probability of buying additional shares is greater for shares that lost value than it was for shares that gained value.
That shouldn't happen if investors are really acting on emotions rather than beliefs, Ben-David said.
"If you buy additional shares of a stock that has lost value, that suggests you are acting on your beliefs that the stock is really a winner and other people have just not realized it yet," he said.
"You wouldn't buy additional shares of a losing stock if your biggest motivation was to avoid realizing losses."
However, Ben-David noted that just because investors act on beliefs rather than feelings doesn't mean they are acting rationally.
"They may be overconfident in their own abilities. It is a different kind of irrationality from being averse to selling losers," Ben-David said.
This study's suggestion that investors act more on beliefs than preferences is likely to make waves in the economics profession, he said.
"In economics, these two stories are very different. Beliefs and preferences are very different concepts, and it is important to distinguish them and how they affect investors. Many economists had thought that an irrational aversion to selling losers was crucial for the trading decisions of retail investors."
"Past research has shown that overconfidence in investing is associated with men and frequent traders," Ben-David said. "They have a belief in their superior knowledge and so you would expect them to buy and sell more quickly than others as they speculate on stock prices. That's exactly what we found. They are engaged in belief-based trading."
The researchers also examined when investors were more likely to buy additional shares of a stock that they had previously purchased. They found that the probability of buying additional shares is greater for shares that lost value than it was for shares that gained value.
That shouldn't happen if investors are really acting on emotions rather than beliefs, Ben-David said.
"If you buy additional shares of a stock that has lost value, that suggests you are acting on your beliefs that the stock is really a winner and other people have just not realized it yet," he said.
"You wouldn't buy additional shares of a losing stock if your biggest motivation was to avoid realizing losses."
However, Ben-David noted that just because investors act on beliefs rather than feelings doesn't mean they are acting rationally.
"They may be overconfident in their own abilities. It is a different kind of irrationality from being averse to selling losers," Ben-David said.
This study's suggestion that investors act more on beliefs than preferences is likely to make waves in the economics profession, he said.
"In economics, these two stories are very different. Beliefs and preferences are very different concepts, and it is important to distinguish them and how they affect investors. Many economists had thought that an irrational aversion to selling losers was crucial for the trading decisions of retail investors."
Apple lists 8 Samsung products it wants banned
18 hrs.
Apple Inc. on Monday submitted a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market.
Apple submitted the list after a jury found Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products.
The products are: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.
A judge will decide the issue later.
Apple claimed in a sweeping lawsuit that Samsung's smartphones and computer tablets "slavishly copied" the iPhones and iPads. Samsung countered with its own claims that Apple used its wireless technology without proper compensation.
A nine-person jury in its verdict last week unanimously agreed with Apple and ordered Samsung to pay $1 billion. Most of the damages were tied to Samsung's smartphones. It rejected Samsung's counterclaims.
The award represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Analysts said the embarrassment of the verdict is a bigger blow for Samsung than the financial setback.
Still, the question remains whether Samsung and other Apple competitors will have to redesign their smartphones to avoid infringing Apple's patents. Most analysts agree the verdict sends a threatening message to device makers like Samsung who use Google's Android operating system.
Israel army chief warns those who think can 'eradicate' Israel
Israeli army chief, Lieutenant General Benny Gantz, warned on Wednesday that those who believed they can "eradicate" Israel will face the brunt of Israeli power, in a veiled threat to Iran.
"These days, the state of Israel and its residents are being threatened. These threats indicate a mistaken evaluation of our strength and capabilities," he said at a ceremony in memory of fallen soldiers.
"Those who believe they can eradicate Israel and act on these beliefs will face the brunt of the IDF power," he added, according to a military statement.
Gantz said the Israeli army was ready and "prepared along our country's borders" to thwart any such threats.
Gantz's remarks come just days after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the "cancerous tumour" of Israel is the biggest problem confronting Muslim countries today.
In a speech marking Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Khamenei said "the big powers have dominated the destiny of the Islamic countries for years and... installed the Zionist cancerous tumour in the heart of the Islamic world," according to Iran's official IRNA news agency.
"Many of the Islamic world's problems come from the existence of the sham Zionist regime," he was quoted as saying.
And last week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also told an annual anti-Israel protest in Tehran that the Jewish state was a "cancerous tumour" that will soon be excised, drawing Western rebukes.
"The Zionist regime and the Zionists are a cancerous tumour," he said.
"The nations of the region will soon finish off the usurper Zionists in the Palestinian land.... A new Middle East will definitely be formed. With the grace of God and help of the nations, in the new Middle East there will be no trace of the Americans and Zionists," Ahmadinejad said.
Khamenei and Ahmadinejad have long used the word "tumour" to portray Israel as an illegitimate state in the Middle East that will inevitably disappear.
There expressions have often met with condemnation from world leaders.
Tensions between Israel and Iran are taut because of threats by the Jewish state to attack nuclear facilities in the Islamic republic to prevent it reaching the capability to produce nuclear weapons.
Israel and its ally, the United States, accuse Iran of seeking to develop an atomic arsenal.
Tehran denies that, and says its nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful. Its military chiefs warn they will destroy Israel if it attacks.
Good news for banana lovers: Help may be on the way to slow that rapid over-ripening
ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A solution finally may be at hand for the number one consumer gripe about bananas: their tendency to ripen, soften and rot into an unappetizing mush, seemingly in the blink of an eye.
Scientists speaking on August 22 in Philadelphia at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society described efforts to develop a spray-on coating that consumers could use to delay the ripening of those 6.4 billion pounds of bananas that people in the U.S. eat every year.
The coating is a so-called "hydrogel," a superabsorbent material like those with many medical and commercial uses, made from chitosan, a substance derived from shrimp and crab shells. Xihong Li, Ph.D., who presented the report, noted that chitosan is attracting considerable attention in efforts to keep fruits and vegetables fresher longer due to its action in killing bacteria that cause produce to rot, low cost and other properties. Until now, however, it has not been used to slow the ripening of bananas.
"We found that by spraying green bananas with a chitosan aerogel, we can keep bananas fresh for up to 12 days," said Li, who is the study's leader. "Once bananas begin to mature, they quickly become yellow and soft, and then they rot. We have developed a way to keep bananas green for a longer time and inhibit the rapid ripening that occurs. Such a coating could be used at home by consumers, in supermarkets or during shipment of bananas."
Li explained that bananas, like other fresh fruit and vegetables, are alive and actually "breathing," or respirating. He is with Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Tianjin, China. Like other fresh fruit and vegetables, bananas stay alive after picking. Like people, bananas breathe, or respire, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide ? but through their skin. The more a banana respires, the quicker it ripens. Unlike many other fruits, the respiration rate in bananas does not slow down, and bananas do not ripen slowly. The banana's pulp releases a chemical that boosts respiration, and the pulp converts into the sugars that produce that sweet, banana taste. As respiration continues, however, the process speeds up, and bananas become unpleasantly sweet and mushy. Bacteria on the banana skin start to thrive and cause the banana to rot.
In their study, Li's team showed that the chitosan hydrogel coating slowed down respiration and killed bacteria that cause rotting, keeping bananas fresh for almost two weeks. But banana lovers should not go bananas over the hydrogel coating just yet. Li's team is on the trail of a new ingredient for producing the hydrogel that would replace an existing ingredient that would not be used commercially.
This study was supported by a National Natural Science Foundation of China Grant and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.
Iceland's debt-relief lessons for eurozone - The Nordic Job Board
As recession deepens across southern Europe, stories abound of indebted firms and households being forced to hand over ownership of their assets to their creditors.
For example, a recent report in Der Spiegel tells of a Spanish bank that evicted from his home a now unemployed man, previously earning less than ?1,000 a month. The bank had happily lent him ?240,000.?
Mass foreclosures of this kind ricochet through the economy, grinding down economic activity and compounding the ?social recession?.
Iceland shows how to do things differently, with creditors bearing more of the direct cost upfront.? Southern European governments ? and even the creditors to southern European firms and households ? would be wise to study its example.??
Iceland was hit by a perfect financial storm in October 2008.? Its financial sector, with a balance sheet 10 times that of the country?s GDP, collapsed.? The national currency, the kr?na, lost 50% to 60% of its value overnight.? Inflation shot above 20% within a few months.? The equity market collapsed and real estate lost a more than a quarter of its value.?
By early 2009 it was clear that some 80% or 90% of Icelandic companies should have declared bankruptcy, including some of the biggest firms in the economy.? The central bank estimated that 25% to 30% of households were in a similar position.
In normal times, the occasional bankruptcy is evidence of a well-functioning economy.? Mass bankruptcy in hard times is another matter entirely.
For one thing, the legal system is painfully slow in clearing up even one bankruptcy, let alone thousands at a time.
For another, it cannot be the case that 80% or 90% of all private activity becomes genuinely unproductive overnight. The question is how to keep firms with temporary balance-sheet problems going and at least partly covering their losses until demand improves.?
And how are the banks going to make money from the property they have acquired??Not by selling the house to someone evicted from their house by another bank.?The bank will probably have to leave the house?empty, and pay real-estate taxes and fees without receiving rental income.?
After the collapse of its oversized banks, the Icelandic banking sector was composed of three banks erected on the domestic operation of the fallen giants, a state run real-estate bank and few small savings and loan institutions. It was obvious that the financial sector would suffer a second collapse if all firms under water were forced into bankruptcy and if all families in a similar situation were evicted from their homes.
After much heated debate,? the government, the financial sector, and the federation of businesses agreed on a comprehensive debt-relief programme.
The main components were as follows:
? For the household sector, debt in excess of 110% of the fair value of each property was written off.? Specific relief measures (administrated by a bank or a new debtors ombudsman) applied for those that could not service a reduced loan.
? Low-income, asset-poor? households with?high-interest mortgage payment got a temporary subsidy from the government.
? Small to medium sized firms could apply for debt relief if they could credibly document positive cash flow from future activities.?
The firm had to be willing to re-engineer its operation so as to make best use of its assets.?Given those conditions, the firm could expect its debt to be written down to equal the discounted value of future earnings; or alternatively, written down to the amount that the bank or other financial firm could expect, in the best of circumstances, to gain from taking the assets over and realizing their monetary value.?Hence the debt relief programmes did not create new equity on the balance sheets of firms or households.
The process provoked plenty of conflicts. For example, the supreme court ruled some forms of loans in foreign currencies illegal.? The government intervened to extend the ruling to all foreign exchange loans granted to households.? These legal challenges have not yet been brought to an end, but so far 12% of the household sector pre-2008 debt has been written off.
The bottom line is that the government, the financial sector and the business sector collectively created a situation that leaves the financial sector with as good a result in terms of total debt collection as possible without the pain of sending most of the firms and many families into bankruptcy, unemployment and dispossession.
Thanks in good part to this tempered approach to debt write-down Iceland?s economy is now growing faster than most countries in Europe, and unemployment is less than 5% (having hit 9.3% in early 2010).
Of course, many Icelanders are still angry at the government and the banks, like their southern European counterparts.?But at least they have a job, they pay property and income taxes, they service their reduced debt, and they can make plans for a vacation or a new car in two years? time.
? Thorolfur Matthiasson is professor of economics at the University of Iceland and member of a parliament-appointed committee overseeing equality of treatment in debt writedowns by the Icelandic financial sector.
Who?s behind that political ad? There?s an app for that
A bulk of the political ads this election cycle are paid for by outside groups not affiliated with official campaigns, making it difficult to keep track of who's actually footing the bill for all the campaign commercials flooding the airways.
Ambiguous names like "Strong America Now," "Leaders for Families" and "Citizens for Prosperity & Good Government" flash briefly on the screen at the end of these ads, but tell viewers precious little about the groups behind them, which allows superpolitical nonprofits to spend millions on campaign speech with little transparency.
The Sunlight Foundation, a Washington-based good government group, launched a new smartphone app called "Ad Hawk," which picks up the audio of political television or radio ads and immediately provides more information about the organizations behind them and what they stand for.
The program uses technology similar to "Shazam," which music lovers use to find out the name of a song and the artist by just holding up their phones to a speaker. The app is available on iPhone and Android phones.
Here's more about how it works:
Mitt Romney's plan for energy independence
Rommey meeting with Ohio coal workers (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)
In what his campaign is billing as a major policy speech, Mitt Romney will unveil an energy plan Thursday that would give states the power to determine whether drilling and mining should occur on federal lands within their borders as part of a larger effort to increase domestic oil, coal and natural gas production and achieve energy independence.
Under current law, the federal government controls oil, coal and gas permits for federal lands. But in a speech at an oilfield services company in Hobbs. N.M., Romney will argue that determination should be up to state officials, insisting individual states are in a better position to "develop, adopt and enforce regulations" on local basis than the federal government--which his campaign says has been unduly influenced by Washington politics.
A policy paper released ahead of the candidate's speech by the Romney campaign argues President Barack Obama "has intentionally sought to shut down oil, gas and coal production in pursuit of his own alternative energy agenda."
In his speech, Romney will contend that loosening regulations on the energy industry will benefit taxpayers by lowering gas costs and reducing the cost of consumer goods, which have increased as companies pay higher energy prices. He'll argue that allowing more federal drilling will not only bring money back into the nation's budget but would result in lower energy prices that could create jobs, lower the trade deficit and increase the nation's security.
"Allowing for greater domestic energy production will be of immense benefit when it comes to jobs and affordable energy for working Americans and middle class families," Ed Gillespie, a senior adviser to the Romney campaign, said in a conference call Wednesday previewing the candidate's speech.
The push is part of what Romney will tout as effort to achieve energy independence by 2020, a plan that also includes expanding offshore energy development along the coast of Virginia and North and South Carolina as well as approval of the Keystone energy pipeline linking Canada to the United States.
Romney's speech comes amid criticism that he hasn't been specific enough about what exactly he would do as president. A Romney aide acknowledged some of the ideas Romney will talk about Thursday he's pitched previously on the campaign trail. But aides insisted the speech will offer more details about how Romney's policies would work as part of a larger effort to improve the economy. Romney will also press the idea that government is standing in the way of the U.S. achieving energy independence?an argument the presumptive Republican nominee has made in the past.
"The challenge in getting there is not about the resources we have. It's not about the technology we have. It's about the government we have," Oren Cass, Romney's domestic policy director, said. "The real question is are we going to pursue the political reforms that will allow us to develop the resources to their fullest."
But the Romney campaign presented different calculations than what has been previously suggested about the impact of the candidate's proposed policies, including the impact of drilling on federal lands. A recent Congressional Budget Office report suggested opening nearly all federal lands to drilling would yield just $7 billion in government revenue over the next decade?a vast difference from "trillions of dollars" estimated by the Romney campaign.
Asked about the disparity, Cass said the campaign was including revenues from both onshore and offshore drilling on federal lands and suggested the CBO had produced lower numbers by not including lease payments, royalties and taxes certain to be earned in coming "years and decades."
"If you keep in mind that this is something that America is going to be able to sustainably produce over years and decades, the aggregate total is much higher," Cass said.
Ahead of Romney's speech, the Obama campaign suggested Romney still wouldn't be specific enough about his energy plans. And an Obama surrogate questioned his close ties to the energy industry. On Tuesday, Romney raised roughly $7 million during a fundraising swing through Texas, which included a finance luncheon with energy industry leaders.
"Gov. Romney is expected to lay out lofty energy goals, but how will he actually get us there?" Federico Pena, a former energy secretary under President Bill Clinton, said in a statement issued by the Obama campaign. "Only two days after a fundraiser hosted by the CEO of major oil companies, Romney is expected to defend billions in oil subsidies while opposing efforts to use oil more efficiently and develop homegrown alternative energy.?We will never reach energy independence by turning our backs on homegrown renewable energy and better auto mileage."
But the Romney campaign rejected criticism of Romney's ties to the energy industry and insisted his proposals will benefit all Americans.
"Unleashing those resources? the beneficiaries of that are consumers and families and workers who will get the benefit of more jobs and more affordable energy," Gillespie said.
Romney is set to speak in New Mexico at 12:55pm ET.
House committee seeks IRS documents on healthcare law
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Republican chairman of a House of Representatives investigatory panel sought documents on Wednesday from the Internal Revenue Service in a battle with the White House over the Democrats' controversial healthcare law.
House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa demanded all documents and communications between the IRS and President Barack Obama's White House after the healthcare overhaul law was signed into law in March 2010, in a letter released on Wednesday.
Issa has challenged the Obama administration's authority to administer the healthcare law in states that are refusing to cooperate. A handful of Republican governors have opted not to establish health insurance exchanges that are required by the law.
The IRS is charged with distributing health insurance tax credits through the state exchanges. Issa argues that federally-created exchanges, set up in the resisting states, cannot deliver the tax credits.
At a hearing earlier this month, IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said the agency can distribute the tax credits.
Shulman acknowledged that "there is some contradictory language" in the health care law.
The oversight committee, which has subpoena powers, requested the IRS documents by September 4. Any weaknesses the committee finds could be used as evidence in a court challenge of the law's implementation.
The Obama administration has refused to turn over to the committee documents it requested from the Justice Department over a botched gun-running operation in Mexico.
That showdown led the House in June to cite Attorney General Eric Holder for contempt.
Indian Mutual Funds are the Best? | Mutual Fund ... - Personal Finance
Written by The RupeeManager Team ?? Wednesday, 22 August 2012 10:08
